“Are you sure you don’t want to speak about it, little lady?”

[“No, I’m good, thanks for asking.”]

[“Lady Hestia, everybody can see that you are annoyed at something, so may I suggest sharing it? Talking should be helpful, I believe?”]

[“Haaaa, I don’t need to, I’m totally fine everybody, so please don’t worry about me.”]

And here I thought traveling towards where the lizardmen were separated from their allies would be a relaxing, calm, and mostly fun trip. Sadly, my companions were too fond of pestering me. They just couldn’t leave me alone with my thoughts.

Honestly…

Then again, maybe it was needed. During the morning as the lizardmen finalized their preparations for our rescue mission, I used this time to confront Saori on eavesdropping on her yesterday. She knew I was there, so I felt a bit bad doing that without her permission.

However, when I tried to talk to her, she simply hugged me, whispering “stay safe,” before cleaning up any hair or dirt on my clothes with a wry smile. She then left after that to take care of the still unconscious virigress mother.

I was left flustered at what happened, too flabbergasted to respond in time. I didn’t know what she was thinking, or what that had to do with what she mumbled yesterday. It was so vexing, and I felt just… awkward. Embarrassed, I let a small sigh out before returning to the group. What the hell was I supposed to say after all that…

And, now, we’re on the road.

We’re on the road again. We’re on the road, on the road. On the road again. I sang to myself with music playing in the background.

“Huh, where is that sound… it’s coming from you, little lady?” Caszcur, the leading lizardman of this rescue party, swung his head around due to the sudden music. “What are you doing with the air… and how is sound coming out of it?”

[“This?”] I stopped playing my air violin to answer his question. ["It's just a little magic trick that I can do with [Aerokinesis]. I can make instruments out of air and perfectly replicate its sound and function. I thought a bit of music would help our rather boring trip… You don’t like it?”]

“U-Uuuuh, nah…” Caszcur gave Tasianna an awkward look, unable to continue speaking with me.

[“Lady Hestia… are you sure you aren’t bothered with what happened with Miss Saori?”] Tasianna asked worriedly. [“Miss Saori probably is going through her own issues after yesterday. She is just worried about you. You don’t need to hide your sadness before me, my lady. If you wish to talk, please, I will kept to myself if you were to wish it.”]

[“I’m ok, I’m ok. Come on, quiet down and just enjoy the music! I haven’t played the violin in a very long time, but I’m sure I haven’t completely forgotten it despite my rustiness,”] I forced a smile before refocusing on keeping the air violin intact.

I still had my memories of playing one, I still had the experience of ten years of violin practice inside of me, however, the muscle memory of playing it was missing from my new body so I wasn't expecting a perfect performance. Sure, my parallel minds could have helped me, but that felt like cheating. I had my own pride as a musician.

Until now, what prevented me from playing an instrument was my own proficiency over [Aerokinesis]. My parallel minds were only able to replicate the sounds by clashing and moving the air around, but they were never able to fully model an instrument.

Making that air rifle gave me the idea to practice making a piano or violin with my skill, although it hadn’t worked until now. You would think a rifle would be the more difficult task to replicate but I didn’t need to reproduce the machinery inside, I only needed a long barrel to shoot bullets out with magic. I also was only a violinist, not a luthier, so it wasn’t like I could make a violin from scratch with wood.

But, really, all that was superficial. What I was happy about was the fact I could play a violin again, finally. Although, it was a bit irritating to hear how rusty I had become. Aside from playing it with my long claws, the feel of playing an air violin was quite foreign. With my arms and fingers not doing what I wanted from them, it was obvious I had to teach this new body of mine how to be a violinist and pianist.

Just like getting my body used to dancing and singing for an extended period again, practice was urgently needed so I could play the violin like in my past life. The piano could wait for now… Well, I didn't even know if I could even replicate it in the first place. Papa never really taught me how it worked from the inside.

Mhmm, yeah, that’s it. Right, right, gotta hold the bow like this. Keep posture straight, but slightly bent to keep the violin from slipping while marching. Right, right, steady breathing. I should be able to sing like this, now.

Through memory alone, I was able to perform at an acceptable range. The most efficient movements to keep the playing comfortable, the way I held the strings while bowing, and also how to replicate the sounds of the violin. All of it was coming back to me.

Gggggggggg… string. Okay, the next should be Ddddddddd. Mhm, mhm, shouldn’t hold it so tensely. Smooth movements and soft touch. Aaaaaaaaa and then Eeeeeeeeee. Right. Move the bow up and down to change the octave. Hold it long for the Dddddddddddddddddddd… flow. Mhhhhm! Yup! Tune the strings a bit, and then you can—

… Well, okay? That was easier to get than [Woodworking]. It only took a few minutes of play, huh?

[“W-Wow… you did mention that you were a virtuoso but… song, dance, and an instrument? Magnificent! Lady Hestia, you could be a main performer during a fairy festival!”]

Tasianna cheered, frantically flying around me as she continued clapping. Eventually, she also began to hum and sing a song I couldn’t properly understand, but it did make me aware Tasianna had a pretty nice voice. A bit off tune as she was giving it her all, but that could be fixed with some proper tips.

Ooh~ Hmm, would she want to perform… Nah, maybe some other time.

“Hey, I can enjoy music like anybody else but… shouldn’t we be less conspicuous?” Caszcur suggested, an opinion the other lizardmen shared as they nodded. "See? The more monsters coming at us, the more we'll be hindered. We got no time to spare."

[“Don’t you worry, Caszcur,”] I assured him. [“Even if something did come up, I’m pretty sure Saori will just take care of… it. …Well, I-I can do it myself, I guess.”]

[“Lady Hestia…”] Tasianna stopped flying around as I slowed down my playing.

Ok, maybe I am feeling a bit lonely.

This was the first time since I met her two months ago that she wasn’t traveling with me. We have been separated once or twice just to hunt, but she was always close enough for my [Detection Sensor] to work, so it really was only a mild social distancing.

However, we were so far away now we couldn't share experience with each other when we killed a monster. It still worked with Tasianna, but Saori was too far away now. Bringing up the bracelet’s search function, the distance between Saori and me was increasing and increasing the further our rescue party moved from the lizardman camp.

[“Ok, I’m sad that Saori decided against coming with us. There. You guys happy now?”] I admitted with exasperation, slumping my shoulders as I stopped playing completely.

"At least you finally admitted it. Your behavior since this morning would make anybody worried," Caszcur called me out.

[“Hey, that’s rude! How can…,”] I wanted to respond back but Caszcur interrupted me.

“Oh, stop being a krill eater, little lady.” Caszcur swung his arm, beginning his lecture without letting me have a word first. “I don’t know about you, but everybody is on edge, as we don’t know when a monster will appear. As strong as you are, try to put yourself in our shoes; people who had to face the horrors of this place, who had to adapt after watching their comrades die. I know you have your own issues right now but control your emotions until we make camp, young scale.”

Tch, I know very well how dangerous this place is… I can relate too well, I kept this thought to myself, understanding what Caszcur actually tried to say.

My mood swings, switching from gloominess into enthusiastic violin playing, were a bit too much for most people, especially when it were people I had never fought together with. Saori was used to my goofiness and carefree nature. These people, however, didn’t. They caught a glimpse of my power, but how much have I proven to them? Nothing; my full strength was still unknown to them.

I was being self-centered.

[“… Haaaa, I guess I was being selfish, sorry,”] I apologized, dispirited. [“I’m supposed to protect you, so I need to get serious.”]

“Ha! You know, the lizardmen clans usually scoff when somebody obediently apologizes, that’s where the origin of ‘krill eater’ comes from. A coward or weakling that would take any abuse just to eat, even if it’s small fry,” Caszcur laughed merrily as he explained the insult. “Sorry, slip of my tongue. Habit. Though, I guess with how lax you’re being, we should be more confident. Though, you haven’t exactly shown what you can do outside of intimidation and healing. Ha, don’t burn us down, ‘kay?”

He then slapped my back as he said that, causing every single lizardman to chuckle at the sight. Although it didn’t really hurt, getting slapped like that felt a bit embarrassing so I couldn’t help but give them the stink eye. They averted their eyes, but were having trouble suppressing your laughter.

‘Everybody is on edge,’ my ass. Watching them all enjoying themselves on my behalf just made Caszcur’s lecture seem so worthless.

[“Hehe, these beastmen seem less intimidating right now, don’t they, Lady Hestia?”] Tasianna said with a chuckle.

[“I can’t deny that.”] I let out a tired sigh. ["They certainly have a sense of humor, at least schadenfreude. Is this the first time that you've met a lizardman, Tasianna?”]

[“Actually, these are the first beastmen I’ve met personally. You two, technically, don’t count after all,”] Tasianna stated, pointing out that Saori and I were technically classified as monsters by the System. [“I have heard so much over my 87-year lifespan, read so many books to fill my mind, and asked more knowledgeable people for information. This was supposed to be a self-exile, but never could I have imagined that it would be this fruitful and fun.”]

[“Ha, well you did get lucky, right? Life is full of twists if it made us able to meet on that fateful day, Tasianna.”]

[“True, I’ve met you two wonderful people, after all… although, I must say that the trolls treated me rather well, compared to my capture by those human bandits. Hiehie, if I had the choice between the two, then I would honestly stay with the trolls,”] Tasianna giggled at her sarcastic remark, shrugging her shoulders after a while about it.

[“Really? Those giant things? Wow, that moment when trolls treat their prisoners better than humans, just how terrible were those people?”] I asked in actual amazement.

[“The absolute worse! Scum, even among humans!”] Tasianna’s anger shot out without a warning as she derided the human race. [“Lady Hestia, you don’t know how gladdened I was when you agreed to come to the elven kingdom.”]

Tasianna’s face looked like someone who couldn’t be happier as she started talking about her limited experience of elven culture, which made me curious about something. Wanting to know it, I asked Tasianna while minding my words, [“Tell me Tasianna… I understand how it could have been caused, but why exactly do you hate the entire human race? Not all humans are like those fairy hunters.”]

Tasianna’s smile faded once I started prodding her for an answer, turning sullen as she decided to sit on my shoulder. [“I know what you mean… but how can you be so sure? Pray, have I not informed you about the heinous acts humans have done to fairies? About how they abandoned the beastmen, half-humans, just because they had different blood? They are warmongers, throughout history, they have caused instability.”]

With her tiny hands, she began caressing my cheeks with a small smile. [“I apologize, I truly do. I understand and fully accept that you must speak up for them, but they are nothing like the humans of your world, Lady Hestia. Ours are terrorists, the worst of Peolynca’s inhabitants. This anger, this irrational anger… I-I can’t stop. I can’t stop fuming whenever I think about them.”]

Looking at her dejected face, I couldn’t help but form a wry smile and pat her head. Tasianna clearly had some rather rough prejudices against a whole race, but it made sense coming from her POV. She has been isolated from the rest of the world, and her only interaction with humans ended up tragically.

Feeling pity for her, I had to voice my opinion on this matter as her friend. [“It’s ok… there is still a ton of time, correct?”]

[“Huh?”] Confused, Tasianna tilted her head.

[“I’m a dragon, you’re a fairy, and Saori is a descendant of a fenrir. I bet she will live for quite some time,”] I began with a full smile. ["You've merely come out of your own shell, your own self-contained home in the fairy village. There is still so much of the world that neither you nor I know about, and I will warn you that we will travel a lot due to my idol career. There is still time for everything to change, I promise.”]

What mere information about our world we shared Tasianna wasn’t enough for her to understand that the humans on Earth had a similarly terrible history, filled with sins and wrongdoings. Even now, Earth’s humans weren’t perfect, they still show their viciousness at times.

However, telling this to Tasianna wouldn’t help her at all. Her hatred was directed towards the humans of Peolynca. If I had told her this, she would have just brushed it off since I was a human once. That was what I had learned of her personality on our travels. I had to persuade her to keep her mind open.

There was also the issue that I was ignorant myself. I knew nothing about this world’s humans, and if I were to start shouting “The elves and fairies might be speaking half-truths about humans” or something else to defend them, it would only be virtue signaling. Tasianna had suffered by the hands of humans, that was without a doubt, the truth.

I couldn’t persuade her at this point. I had nothing to argue with, however, that wouldn’t stop me from trying it in the future. Our party wasn’t restricting ourselves with the elves only. As an entertainer, I had to spread my wings towards the whole world if possible, to anybody who wished to listen to me. I might lack confidence in my abilities now, but I would get there eventually.

As we traveled the world together, I hoped Tasianna would learn more about it.

Looking at Tasianna’s dumbfounded face made me chuckle. I should have been a bit clearer so she would understand my intentions but repeating it would be awkward. [“Anyways… I guess it has gone on a bit too long now…hold on tightly, Tasianna.”]

[“Huh? What do you mean…ahhh!”]

Conjuring a brown colored magic circle in my hand, I poured in the necessary amount of mana, quickly materializing a large, sharp, stone spearhead with its help. Giving its order “fly straight, aim true”, I turned my body around and shot a singular [Earth Spears] into the darkness of the rainforest.

Before it could hit its target, I tensed up my leg muscles and launched my whole body forward, darting through the air like a bullet, following my spell. Due to my acceleration, I had to dig my claws into the ground, tearing through mud and pebbles, to kill my speed. Still not stopping, I quickly nabbed a green, fuzzy object using my spare hand while watching my spear pierce the head of a monster.

“Wooo, nice, finally a level up, it only took me a whole week of grinding,” I complained as I swiftly decapitated the corpse to let it bleed out.

Now…

[“So… Rajah, what do you have to say for yourself?”] I said to the green, fuzzy object in my hand.

“Meow… mreow?” he answered, cajoled by the displeased face I was making right now.

[“R-Rajah?! Why, why are you here? I thought we told you to stay with your mother and siblings!”] Tasianna demanded to know, quickly recovering from the sudden acceleration.

Morning, when we were about to leave, Rajah wanted to come with us for some reason, but I rejected it. We were going on a rescue mission against unknown odds, so I didn’t want to risk it by bringing somebody who couldn’t fight properly.

Rajah was still a cub, a mere F rank monster, a rank that wasn’t adequate enough to combat whatever lay ahead. If I was supposed to rescue somebody, then I didn’t want something holding me back, to put it bluntly.

Tasianna’s magic was a boon, helpful as it could support me defensively. It also helped Tasianna was small enough she could grab onto my horns to avoid being put in danger. I didn’t need to hold onto her and if I had to protect her, it would be a cinch.

The lizardmen insisted on coming as they knew where the accident happened and were decently equipped to handle some situations. Caszcur’s and the guard’s stats weren’t extraordinary, but I already figured out a way for them to participate in the case a D rank or higher monster appeared.

I had a plan on how to use everybody in our rescue party to their fullest potential, but what could Rajah do? I loved him but I couldn’t figure out a role for him.

“Hey!” While Tasianna and I continued interrogating this naughty, little green cat, Caszcur sprinted over to us. "What in Marsven did you two run off for, huh? This rainforest is filled with creatures and ambushers, so going on your… own…"

Seeing me carrying Rajah and the decapitated monster corpse must have answered all his questions, as he just shook his anger away, wanting to ask us what happened.

[“I noticed Rajah following us once we made a good distance away from the camp,”] I told Caszcur. [“I thought he would return by himself, so I left him alone. When HE was about to get eaten by a monster, I saved him and that’s that.”]

“You’re telling me that your pet monster followed us until now? Didn’t you say that he should stay behind?” he asked while scratching his head.

[“I did, yes, but this guy is so disobedient. Grrrr, I tried slamming some discipline into him but just look at this,”] I said as I carefully grinded my knuckle on Rajah’s head, showing him the ramifications of his actions. [“I’m sorry but we need to go back. We can’t bring him with us!”]

“Mreow!” At that moment, Rajah shook my hand away and directly stared into my eyes. “Mreow!”

Surprised at his continued defiance, I reciprocated his glare, [“Huh? No, Rajah, you can’t come with us, it’s too danger…”]

“Ahahaha!” Interrupted by a boisterous laugh, I looked over to Caszcur. “I loved that small thing’s guts! A beast wanting to follow its master into battle so willingly would make the serpent tamers in our homeland jealous. It’s too late, little lady, you should’ve said something the moment you noticed him, but we’ve made too much progress already. We can’t afford to waste time, so just bear with it and live with the consequences.”

Caszcur and his lizardmen continued laughing merrily at us as they turned back to our original route, leaving us three alone.

[“Rajah…”] I glared at him, still irritated.

“Mreow!” he cried out, still adamant about following me.

[“Lady Hestia… at this point we don’t have much of a choice,”] Tasianna stated.

She was right. I could run back and forth at top speed, but the problem was I wasn’t accustomed to this area and its terrain. I could get lost. Time was of the essence. If I were to leave the lizardmen, they would either have to follow back or stay put, as I was the sole reason they were confident enough to mount a rescue plan. I would break their trust if I left now.

They could continue traveling while I brought Rajah back but how was I supposed to find them in this dense rainforest? I could use landmarks or make them myself, but that was completely out of the question as it required me to search from the air to be efficient about it. We had no idea where those wyverns were and Saori did tell me not to cause another disturbance.

It was too risky. I could be found by the wyverns, get lost in the rainforest, or waste precious time we might need to help the lizardmen’s friends. Bringing Rajah back to the camp brought too many disadvantages.

[“Tch, you little… stay with me the whole time, ok? Gott verdamm— Haaa, I have to think of a way to keep you safe now,”] I scowled.

Thinking optimistically, it was a good chance to train him to get used to fighting with me. If, and only if, he still wanted to follow me now that he found his family. Of course, I was also willing to bring his whole family with us, although Saori and Tasianna might be against that idea.

Still, why did Saori not notice that he went outside the camp? She should have been the one to… oh?

Looking at Rajah’s legs, all four were filthy and stained with mud, completely covering his beautiful green fur. Trekking through the swamp with his body size must have been hard on him.

Pitying him, I asked Tasianna to clean him up.

“Mreow, hieeee!” As [Create Water] was about to be cast, Rajah jumped out of my hand and landed back down.

[“Hey, Rajah, I’m just trying to clean you up! Are you scared of water?”] I asked, fed up at his behavior at this point.

However, he just ignored me and carried on walking away from us. Before I could burst out in frustration, Caszcur shouted “hurry up already.” forcing us to leave it for later. With Tasianna soothing me for being a terrible pet owner who wasn't able to get a cat under control, I followed behind with a downcasted head.

With Rajah joining us, we continued until night came. Deciding to make dinner, I took out my self-made cooking wares and started preparing using the ingredients the lizardmen brought with them. In gratitude, I made a masterful stew using one of Saori’s recipes. Mhmm, stew~

“Honestly, the stew is fantastic, absolutely mouthwatering,” Caszcur praised as he couldn’t stop slurping it.

“Thanks for the delicious herbal water, Tasianna. Haha, my body feels like it lost some of the pent-up anxiety,” a lizardmen guard cheered, joyfully enjoying Tasianna’s tea.

“Glad you ladies came with us. When I was just a young scale going hunting with the elder scales, the only thing we got to eat was sun-dried fish without any seasoning,” another lamented as he devoured the stew and tea.

I made sure to be generous about the seasoning usage. If they were willing to share their food with us then it was only appropriate for us to share our spices and herbs with them, creating a rather humble, but delicious feast.

“You’re a great cook but did you say that you made these bowls and spoons, little lady?” Caszcur, having finished his bowl, inspected my creations with the meticulous eyes of a trained artisan. Knowing what was about to happen, I nervously clenched the cauldron ladle as I listened to his critique. “I can see that you’ve put some effort into it but, as my tail is my witness, I have to say that they are disastrous. The design is fine, but the execution is honestly clumsy. A complete newbie could do better than this.”

“Yeah gotta agree with Caszcur,” a guard spoke up, inspecting my cauldron. “The stone cauldron serves the general function but there is no perfection, none of the skill that a craftsman should show in his work. Bit disappointing.”

"Ah, don't let it get to you, little lady. We elder scales are letting our skill's speak aloud, and it's not like you need to be the best at everything,” Caszcur and his pals laughed as they tried to soften their criticism. “Anyways, fill me up, ahaha! I can’t get enough of your stew.”

[“NO! You aren’t getting any seconds! You jerks aren’t getting any seconds! Oh, my poor bowls, you didn’t deserve to hear that!”] I yelled, grabbing the cauldron, intending to finish the rest up by myself!

“““HAAAAAAAAAAAA?!”””

“Hey, hey, stop that, little lady! We still need to eat! I’m sorry, ok! Come on, your bowls show promise! You just need to practice and spend more time and you’ll… HEY! Don’t drink the whole stew from the cauldron!”

After some frantic shouting and flailing to hold me back, I eventually stopped my tantrum and gave everybody the rest of the stew until they were full. Even with all the strong, tall lizardmen around, it was Tasianna who managed to repair my broken pride with some nice tea.

Before we went to sleep, I wanted to clean Rajah’s feet, but he kept on insisting he didn’t want to. Having had enough, I let out a tired sigh and allowed his legs to stay covered in mud, which were dirty enough I couldn’t see his fur at all. Interestingly enough, I managed to wipe a bit of mud off one of his legs but somehow the verdant green didn’t appear, instead, it was extremely black.

It neither smelled like it was burnt nor as if he stepped onto something weird. It was just a muddy, moist smell of fur. At that point, I thought the mud dried and caused his fur to look like he painted it with black paint, so black I could make jokes about looking into the abyss or something.

Well, he didn’t seem to be hurt so I didn’t worry about it. He was actually acting pretty sweet once I dropped it, so I decided to cuddle onto him as I slept. Tasianna, like always, used my head as her preferred sleeping location.

The night went by and dawn came. Reenergized, we advanced forwards and eventually found an area with broken trees and weapons lying on the ground. I could see some wooden bows and spears, but they were also some cracked metal spears and swords. Crushed metal pieces were also sprayed in the whole area.

It seemed we finally made it to our destination.
