Hayer watched the monster slowly approaching him.

There were two types of monsters: one that looked like a termite hill and one that looked like a camel.

What looked like a termite hill wrapped around and devoured the Qahif with its sand-like body. On the other hand, what looked like a camel was an animal-shaped monster that had been seen on the southern border.

There were a total of three camel-like monsters, one of whom was casually wandering near the oasis with its head cut off by the Qahif.

After confirming the movements of the monsters until they came as close as possible, he soon started running through the alleys of the village to avoid them.

The camel-shaped monster ran after him at a relatively high speed.

As he ran, he looked up. There were still three or four huge birds circling over his head.

Hayer knew that the birds were the eye of the King of Siere, who was watching him. He thought he should kill them earlier, but he also thought there would be a necessary moment. Like now.

He pulled out a dagger and threw it into the air, and a bird fell to the ground with an untimely, accurate, and strong strike. The two other birds cried ominously at the fall of their comrade.

One monster fell to the ground and approached the fluttering bird, while the rest tried to look up at the sound from the air.

Hayer looked at the shapes of the monsters at that moment. Along with the action of looking up, the bottom of the termite hill monster was gradually revealed.

Hayer motioned, and an arrow flew from behind and pierced into the monster. Immediately, the part where it lifted on the monster came down with a thump.

At the moment of sensing the danger, Hayer, who had confirmed which part the monster was protecting, lightly jumped up and climbed onto the roof of the house firmly made of sand before the monster approached and tried to swallow him. Then he looked at the location of the termite hill monsters and lured the two separated monsters into one place.

“Come on, come here. Good boy.”

As if angry at the sound of Hayer calling, the termite hill monster sped up bit by bit.

Hayer stood at the corner of a large Qahif house and alternately checked the termite hill monsters approaching from both sides. And the moment the two got closer, he grabbed the roof and climbed up.

After he left, two monsters running to catch him collided at the corner. And the slightly smaller of the two fell back.

When the monster fell sideways, Hayer picked up a sand brick from the roof and threw it at the bottom of the fallen monster. Then the brick broke, and the monster struggled.

The monster couldn’t swallow the brick. Hayer, who confirmed that, immediately ran to his subordinates. And after explaining what he just saw, he went on.

“There seems to be a weakness under the body. It hid the bottom when the arrow flew.”

Hencke replied to the remark.

“Then we’ll have to… knock them down first.”

“Looks like it.”

Then Annamaria said.

“But when it touches the body, it eats everything. How do you knock it down?”

Her words made the Knights tremble. The monsters on the southern border were familiar, but the monsters here in the desert were a new species and made them feel a new fear.

Hayer opened his mouth.

“You saw it earlier, right? The bird made a noise from above, so the bottom could be revealed as it was trying to look up. I mean, you have to let it look up.”

“Then…”

“We’ll lure it to the watchtower.”

The Knights gave a nod at his words.

Hayer continued.

“Before we arrive, let’s kill all the camel-like monsters so that they don’t become variables. And another thing to think about is that if you get too close to the watchtower, those termite hills will eat away at the watchtower.”

His words made the knights swallow.

After gnawing at the watchtower, the people on it would fall and their survival could not be guaranteed. So before that, they had to kill all the monsters.

Hayer divided the Knights and assigned roles. He said to Annamaria and Hencke.

“You two deal with those camels somehow.”

“Yes, trust my agility.”

“My sword.”

Hencke and Annamaria alternated. The two always fought, but it was a combination that created the best synergy when they were together.

Hayer continued.

“The four of us here make a noise and run to the watchtower unconditionally. The person who arrives first delivers the strategy to the Qahifs. I and the other four will take over.”

“Yes, Captain.”

After completing the strategy like that, the first four people to go to the watchtower started running and shouting.

The monsters scattered throughout the village came out and began to move along with them.

Knights on the roof, including Hayer, told the location of the monsters.

“Camille! There’s a monster in front of you, so come up!”

Camille ran at the words of Knight Ian, grabbed Ian’s hand from the roof, and jumped up.

The monster that was following behind and the monster that was coming from the front collided.

Camille said with chills.

“Wow, I almost disappeared like sand…”

As Hayer did earlier, two monsters collided and one fell to the ground.

Camille lured the monster that had not fallen again, and Ian went down and took out an arrow and fired it at the monster’s foot.

The monster cried as if the sand were reverberating. When Ian finished shooting his bow, the termite hill began to crack.

Ian fumbled and confirmed there were no more arrows, and Hayer came down. Then he cut the body of the cracked termite hill with his sword. The termite hill in that state was no longer able to swallow other objects, and it broke into pieces.

Ian was relieved and said, retrieving the arrow.

“Is it dead?”

At that, Hayer dug into the termite nest that had been broken by the sword. He soon found things like termites inside. The tiny termites were moving to make a home again on the spot.

“I don’t think it is until we kill them all.”

“That’s true. I’ve never seen such a small monster.”

Ian continued with a fright.

“If those things… increase. How can the Luwans win?”

“……”

“Can we… win?”

Ian knew that Hayer, his leader, was never an optimistic person. No, rather, he was more of a pessimist—a prepared man. Ian wondered how he was predicting this situation.

At the words of his subordinate, who could not contain all his fear, Hayer looked at him.

He knew what his subordinates were like.

Ian was a person who wanted to know exactly what was going on. The uncertainty was one of the hardest things for him.

Hayer jumped back up to the roof to check the location of the monsters, grabbed Ian’s arm, and said.

“If you ask me if we can stop the war with Siere. Yeah, I think that’s rather possible.”

“Then…”

“If you ask if I can cut down all the sacred trees before Luwan is covered with monsters.”

“……”

“Honestly, I think it’s already too late.”

“……”

Ian accepted what he said. It was a hopeless answer, but also a clear answer made him feel comfortable.

Hayer knew his subordinate’s mind, but smiled and asked.

“Are you scared?”

“Rather, it crossed my mind. A reason to fight for one’s life a little more.”

Ian said that, smiled, and ran on the roof to protect his comrades again.

Hayer thought his subordinates were too precious to exist in a world that might be destroyed.

Virore, the castle of Siere near the border with Luwan.

The King of Siere, Carl Lassor, was continuously aware of the movement of Hayer’s party.

Carl Lassor stood on the wall close to the border. It was the entrance to the desert, and the Sieres brought in countless efforts to build walls on the sand.

Not a single blade of grass or a small flying insect could be seen in the sizzling desert heat.

One of his men came running and reported to him.

“Sir Hayer has changed direction.”

“To where?”

“It’s a Qahif village. And… it looks like he used a carrier bird as bait to catch monsters.”

It cost an enormous amount of money to raise a single carrier bird. In addition, it took enough time and labor to be happy to even do it with money. Carl Lassor burst into laughter at his son’s behaviour of throwing a carrier bird as bait without hesitation.

“He resembles his mother.”

“Is that so?”

“Yes. Decisions are quick and certain.”

He continued, looking back at the desert.

“What about the princess who was sending me letters?”

“There seems to be a woman in the group, but I don’t know if it is the princess.”

“Send to the Luwan capital and check. If it is the princess in the party.”

“Are you going to kill anyone who crosses the border?”

“No.”

Carl Lassor shook his head.

“Pretend you don’t know and let them come into Virore. If the princess and my son are lovers, it would be better to keep them together.”

He continued, looking in the direction of the capital.

“I hope the princess is fearless. Don’t faint when you see the monsters in the capital.”
