The submarine followed the merfolk from afar, and there were three dots on the screen: the red dot represented the merfolk, the middle white dot was their submarine, and the trailing white dot was the other submarine behind them.

Visibility in the deep sea was low, under the submersible’s searchlight, everything outside appeared pitch black.

Fear of the ocean stems from the unknown.

In the pitch-dark surroundings, you have no idea what might be present.

You might think there’s nothing, but with a turn, the hunter could appear right in front of you.

Through the front glass, all they could see was an ocean of unknown depth, and the merfolk had vanished.

But the small red dot on the screen continued to move.

After following the merfolk’s dive for almost an hour, the merfolk stopped in a certain place.

Dr. Camila noticed and slowed down the submarine.

Just as they were about to approach the location of the red dot, the screen flickered for an instant. When the screen lit up again, the small red dot had disappeared.

Dr. Camila’s frustrated voice came from the front, “Damn it, it happened again! Move forward!”

Again?

Xia Chi subconsciously glanced at the person beside him, thinking it was his companion, but when he turned his head, he saw a pale face with rolled-up eyes: “…”

It’s too visually shocking!

Ahem, but, again?

Does that mean they had used this method to track merfolk before, aiming to find the merfolk’s lair? Hence, every time, the tracker disappeared in one place?

After diving for another distance, the submarine finally arrived at the spot where the merfolk disappeared.

In front of where the merfolk vanished, there was a large coral reef, and behind the coral reef was a towering rock cliff.

It looked like a mountain; could this place have been land before, and then the plate tectonics turned it into the ocean?

The submarine circled around the rock, and just when Xia Chi thought they were about to turn back, Dr. Camila suddenly pointed to a place, “Illuminate that area!”

The spotlight shone, and in the steep rock, a faintly visible narrow opening appeared.

“Quick, quick, go there,” Dr. Camila said excitedly, seeming to have made an astonishing discovery.

As the submarine approached, they finally saw it clearly.

It was a hole with a diameter of about four or five meters, and indeed, a merfolk could enter from there.

Dr. Camila quickly ordered, “Release the detector.”

At first, Xia Chi didn’t understand what the detector was, but as the hatch opened, a thing with a rotating spiral lights ran out, and when the screen displayed the image again, he understood.

It was a camera.

Xia Chi was about to poke his head and see what was on the camera when Dr. Camila suddenly turned his head abruptly.

His blank eyes stared behind him. His head didn’t move, only his pupils moved from the left to the right like a chameleon.

That action, if anyone claimed it’s not inhuman, he’d argue with them.

With his eyes rolling, he sniffed the air as if searching for something.

Suddenly, Xia Chi felt a bit nervous.

He seemed to have discovered his brother’s presence on the deck earlier. Now, in this enclosed space, could he have smelled his brother?

“Doctor, what are you smelling?” Xia Chi took a deep breath, and bravely asked Dr. Camila.

Dr. Camila: “Strange, I’ve been smelling something for awhile. Can’t you smell it?”

Xia Chi: “What smell? I don’t smell anything.”

Dr. Camila’s gaze fell on Xia Chi’s face. He hesitated for two seconds, and slowly said, “Of course, you can’t smell it. After all, you’re just…”

He stopped halfway, remembering something, then quickly shut his mouth.

After a moment, Dr. Camila stood up from his chair. He continued sniffing with his head up, walking forward, as if searching for something.

Soon, Dr. Camila came to Xia Chi.

Xia Chi swallowed saliva nervously, only to see Dr. Camila bring his nose close to his neck.

During their close contact, Xia Chi smelled a fishy smell.

In fact, he had smelled it on the deck, but because they were surrounded by the ocean, he thought it was the sea breeze bringing the smell of the sea to him.

But now, in the enclosed space of the submarine, he finally confirmed that this smell did not come from the ocean but from Dr. Camila himself.

Xia Chi subconsciously held his breath.

After sniffing Xia Chi for a while, Dr. Camila left.

This time, he went to the seat behind Xia Chi, where his Brother was sitting.

The heart that had just relaxed tightened again. Xia Chi quickly opened the private chat interface in the system.

Xia Chi: [Brother, where are you?]

After awhile, Bai Lixin’s private chat came over, [I’m now next to the other player, I’m no longer seated.]

Seeing this, Xia Chi relaxed for a moment, but it didn’t last long. He soon saw Dr. Camila walking to the other player.

This player’s psychological endurance was no different from his own, looking almost terrified.

Xia Chi: [Brother, where are you now?!]

Bai Lixin: [At the front.]

Xia Chi subconsciously glanced forward, only to see the other two NPCs also starting to sniff the air.

Xia Chi’s heart was in his throat.

Dr. Camila continued to move forward. Soon, he returned to his seat, looking somewhat dazed, and with a hint of confusion.

He scratched his head, seemingly ready to search for the second time when the NPC driver beside him shouted, “Doctor, there’s a situation.”

Only then did Dr. Camila shift his attention from the surroundings, and his gaze quickly fell to the screen in front.

In the middle of the screen, as the detector continued to penetrate, a hollow area suddenly appeared.

The detector could be used both in water and on land. With Dr. Camila’s signal, the probe landed on land.

The spotlight had a limited visible range. As the detector rotated, they also saw the scene of this mysterious cavity on the screen.

It wasn’t a narrow hollow area; on the contrary, this place was quite spacious.

Everywhere were stalactites eroded by seawater, and the walls and ceiling were cratered.

Just as the detector was about to continue deep inside, a dark shadow suddenly flashed across the lens.

The next second, the screen was filled with white lines. Snowflakes flickered for an instant, and finally, it went completely black.

Before the black screen, the central image brightened once more. In that brief moment, a faintly visible leg appeared on the screen.

The leg wasn’t human because it was green, but its shape closely resembled a human leg.

Dr. Camila’s eyes went wide. He pressed a few buttons on the screen, and the screen flickered for a moment before returning to the previous scene.

As the footage played, he seized the opportunity, quickly pressing the pause button.

The image froze at the moment the shadow appeared.

The shadow was very blurry, and blurry meant the other party was very fast.

But in the blurry image, Dr. Camila still found clues: “Come and take a look, does it look like a human?”

“These are two legs.” Dr. Camila pointed to the two dark shadows below.

“Here is the head.” Dr. Camila pointed to the head above.

“Here are its two arms.” Dr. Camila’s voice became excited.

“We’ve made a significant breakthrough! This is likely a merfolk. In our previous research, a merfolk’s body structure could meet both aquatic and terrestrial life. They not only have gills but also a nose and respiratory system. That’s why they can breathe with gills underwater and use their noses on land.”

“If they only lived in water, they shouldn’t have evolved a connected nasal cavity and respiratory tract.”

“Previously, we speculated that merfolk might undergo metamorphosis like frogs.”

“But they are more agile than frogs. On land, they can grow two legs just like us, and in the sea, they can grow a tail.”

The driver argued, “But the merfolk we captured never underwent this metamorphic transformation, no matter how many experiments we conducted.”

“Because they’re smart!” Dr. Camila exclaimed, “they won’t expose their last cards. If they could complete such evolution, it further illustrates their intelligence.”

“Let’s go!” Dr. Camila suddenly stood up from his seat,” “Drive in and take a look.”

The driver nodded, “Okay, Doctor.”

With that, he maneuvered the small submarine and dived into the opening.

The interior of the cave was rugged, and they had to drive carefully to avoid hitting the walls.

Soon, they reached the hollow showed on the detector earlier.

Before disembarking, they first lit a match to test the oxygen concentration.

Once they confirmed the match was burning, the submarine’s hatch opened, and the team walked out.

Behind them, another submarine quickly followed.

People gradually disembarked from the submarine, each holding a flashlight.

They gathered by the water’s edge, and Dr. Camila inspected the hollow area with excitement and nervousness, “Go, bring the fishing devices.”

At the mention of fishing devices, the NPCs from the second submarine returned to it. When they came back, they held something resembling pistols.

Dr. Camila took the fishing device, distributing one to each person.

When it came to Xia Chi and Glasses, they were the last ones to receive.

“…” Xia Chi: “What about ours?”

Dr. Camila: “Your task today is to learn. You don’t know how to use the fishing device, so just watch and learn.”

Xia Chi: “But what if that monster suddenly attacks us? We need to protect ourselves.”

Several NPCs exchanged glances, and suddenly burst into laughter.

Dr. Camila’s next words made Xia Chi and Glasses shiver, “Attack you? Wouldn’t that be even better?”

Xia Chi: “…”

‘Damn it, did they plan to use us as bait from the beginning?!’

Dr. Camila: “Alright, just kidding, hee hee hee. You are our future companions. How could we do such things to companions? I’m just teasing you, go on.”

‘Future companions?

Do companions act like this?

No thanks.’
