Chapter 142: Lucas
This whole chapter will be from Sig’s POV.

“Oi! Time to take a break! It’s hot today so make sure you guys stay hydrated, okay?”
“Everyone! There are some drinks here! Come here!”
I was playing with the brats when I felt thirsty so I raised my voice to tell the brats to take a break for a moment. I had to make sure they had enough to drink otherwise they might collapse from playing. Quick to grasp the situation, one of the teachers already had a basket full of water bottles. The teacher called for the brats to come over there under the shade of a tree.
“Lucas, huh. I see you’ve become accustomed to being a ‘sensei’, huh?”
“Ahaha…. How long do you think I’ve been working here?”
I picked up Connie, who was beside me, in my arms and took him with me under the shade of the tree. Lucas, a fellow wolf beastman like me was already waiting for us there. Lucas used to be one of the orphans in here and he originally left the orphanage to become an adventurer but about a year ago, he got injured so he returned back to the orphanage and then he had been working here ever since.
Just like Malik-san, while his injuries didn’t pose any trouble for his daily activity, it was still difficult for him to continue working as an adventurer without a little bit more rehabilitation. Since Lucas and I were the same age, we were both a wolf beastman too and we had similar personalities, we had always been treated like a pair in the orphanage.
“Lucas-sensei, please give me more tea.”
“Oh, here you go. Be careful when you drink it, okay?”
“Thank you.”
After I put Connie down, he went trotting to where Lucas was and asked for a drink. Lucas then told him to sit there if Connie wanted to drink his tea.
“It’s been a while since I last move my body like this~”
“You’re right. Except when we’re on the job, we’re pretty much….”
“But Chris-ani and the others are really strong, right?!”
Chris and Fer were coming over here too, followed by a bunch of other kids. I had been worried if the two of them could handle those orphaned brats since Fer and Chris were raised with silver spoons but contrary to my worry, the two of them were able to deal with the brats better than I expected. I was glad to see they were having fun with the brats.
“Fufu~ My job as an adventurer is not just for show, you know? I have a pretty high physical ability.”
Fer said while smiling as he patted Mikal’s head who was walking beside him.
“Then let’s do it again after this break!”
That brat, Mikal. I guess he doesn’t know Fer is a prince. I mean, that brat is nonchalantly punching Fer’s back like that.
“No can do, okay? After you’re done with your break, you need to go back to your room to have a snack. If you don’t then I will eat your share, okay?”
Lucas reprimanded Mikal, who was still eager to play some more.
“What?! No no! I want to have a snack!”
Mikal immediately panicked when Lucas said that.
Well, Mikal is still 10 so I guess a snack is very important for him.
“Then drink your tea properly…. Prince, Chris-san, it’s been a while.”
“Lucas…. I always told you to stop calling me a prince, didn’t I?”
“I’m sorry. I’ll be more careful.”
Lucas had a few drinks with them with me as the bridge so the three of them were pretty familiar with each other. Hence why Lucas bowed his head and greeted them. While Lucas was talking with them, Mikal overheard the word ‘prince’ come out from Lucas’s mouth. Mikal’s eyes widened and he mouthed ‘for real…?’ at me and I nodded at him silently. His face quickly turned pale.
Even this naughty brat was well aware that hitting a prince was a dangerous feat to pull.
“Yeah, it’s been a while, Lucas~ You look good~”
“Yes. Congratulations for your engagement.”
“Thank you. Most probably Ren-kun will be frequenting this place often in the future. We’ll be in your care by then.”
“Yes.”
As I watched the three of them smiling while conversing with each other and Lucas handing them their drink, I secretly went over to Mikal. I patted his back lightly and comforted him.
“Fer won’t accuse you for treason so don’t mind it, okay?”
“Re-Really?”
“Yeah.”
It seemed he was really afraid of being punished. After I reassured him, I could see his body became lax.
Or rather, how come you didn’t realize Fer is the prince? I’m sure you must’ve seen Fer’s portrait somewhere.
“Hey, Sig-ani. Are you really going to get married?”
“Huh? Yeah. I am.”
While I was drinking my tea beside Mikal, Noah, who had the same physique as an adult, came to ask me.
“With that beautiful person? Sounds nice.”
“Yeah, yeah! Even though he’s so small!”
The guys who were old enough to leave the nest, stared at me enviously. These guys already surpassed Ren’s height so this must be the first time they had ever seen an adult man as small as Ren.
“I know, right? Not only Ren is cute, his cooking is so incredibly good too. Even though he’s a newbie adventurer, he just recently got promoted to A-rank too, you know?”
“Sig-ani, you’re praising your lover too much…. Wait?! Even though he’s so small, he’s an A-rank adventurer?!”
“You must be joking, right?”
I was only telling them the truth but these brats were looking at me like they were tired of me. They also looked visibly surprised to find out that Ren, who from appearance wise looked like he’d be the one being protected, was actually an A-rank adventurer.
“Ren is not a vanguard. He provides logistic support as a support magician. He almost never fights the enemy directly but the buff magic he provides is really damn good.”
“Ooh…”
Besides, despite the stereotype, being an adventurer was not only about fighting with brute force. I tried to explain that to them but it seemed even after I explained it to them, these guys still couldn’t get it. These brats were inclining their head to the side as they listened to me.
“Well, Ren-chan also has some contracted magic beast so when push comes to shove, he can also do direct attract himself~”
“Huh?! Magic beast?! I, I want to see it!”
After Chris mentioned Ren’s contracted magic beast, Mikal, who was looking a little dejected, immediately perked up. He easily bite the bait thrown by Chris.
“Why don’t you ask him later? Ren-chan is kind so I’m sure he will show it to you~”
“Yeah!”
When Chris said that Mikal should ask Ren himself, I could see the sparkle in his eyes as he nodded excitedly.
Ah…. If I’m not wrong, Mikal did say he wants to be an adventurer and to top it all off, he wants to be able to summon a magical beast too? Mikal is a crocodile beastman though so it’s going to be pretty difficult for him to be able to summon a magical beast. For some reason, magical beasts in general are not attracted to a beastman’s magic power so there’s not many beastman with contracted magical beasts. But still, the possibility is not exactly 0 so he said he still wants to give it a try after he becomes an adult.
In the first place, beastman generally have superior physical ability so there’s not many beastman who would try summoning a magical beast.
“Hey, Sig. It’s been a while since we last met so why don’t we go out for a drink today? Your fiancé is Ren only, right? You can take him along with you too.”
“Ah… Is it alright if I just go by myself? I don’t want Ren to drink in front of other people. I’m going to boast about Ren to you myself.”
While watching me with narrowed eyes, Lucas invited me out for a drink. Every time I came here, I almost always went out for a drink with him after all. I already said it myself that this guy and I had similar personalities. He was also the type to play around so I didn’t want him to stick around with Ren too much. I also didn’t want Ren to drink in front of other people hence why I asked if it would be alright if I went by myself. There would be no problem if I went to drink with Lucas by myself.
“Huh? So despite his appearance, that guy actually has bad drinking habits?”
Lucas blinked his eyes in surprise. It was beyond his expectation that Ren had bad drinking habits.
“In a way, yeah…”
Rather than ‘bad’.. It’s more like Ren becomes spoiled when he’s drunk. I don’t mind if it’s just with us but Ren also acts spoiled to other people like what he had done with Malik-san. I don’t want to see Ren go around hugging other people so I’m definitely not going to let him become drunk in front of others.
“Ooh… I wonder what he looks like when he’s drunk? Anyway, I want to hear about him from you too.”
Lucas looked excited as he became curious about Ren’s drinking habits.
“Can’t be helped then. So does that mean you can go out tonight?”
“Yeah. When I heard you’re going to come, I already told them I wanted to go drinking with you so it’ll be fine.”
“Then I’ll meet you at our usual place at 22:00 after the brats go to sleep?”
“Roger that!”
After I confirmed the place and the time for our meeting, Lucas nodded his head. His tail was wagging back and forth excitedly.
“Ren-san!”
“Yes? What is it?”
After he finished drinking his tea, Mikal returned inside and I saw him running toward Ren. Hearing his name being called, Ren turned his neck, revealing the sight of an infant in his arms.
Hmm… I don’t know who this brat is. I guess this brat must’ve come during the 2 months I didn’t come here….
“Please let me see your magical beast!”
“Hm… Did someone tell you about it?”
“Yes, it was Chris-ani…”
Ren was lightly tapping on the infant’s back as he stood up. Mikal was still a little bit shorter than Ren so Mikal was looking up to Ren as he asked to be allowed to see the magical beast.
“Fufu~ You don’t need to look at me like that. I don’t mind showing it to you but you need to finish eating your snack first, okay?”
Ren laughed softly as he agreed to show his magical beast to them.
“Yeah! Thank you!”
“Yay!”
The other children who were interested in the magical beast also shouted in joy. I could only see the back of Mikal’s face from where I was standing. I wondered what kind of desperate face he had?
“Sig-san, I will need to go outside to take them out. Umm… This child…”
“I will hold the child for you. Fufu~ Ren, you’re good at holding an infant and small children. I’m sure you will be a wonderful parent whenever you’re ready.”
“That’s…!”
We moved the table from the corner and let the children sit wherever they wanted. After the snacks were distributed, the brats immediately jumped into the food, munching it excitedly until their cheeks were all puffed up. I was enjoying the sight of them eating when Ren came approaching me. He looked at me, having trouble deciding what to do with the child in his arms. I could hold the child for him but since Ren was about to let out his magical beasts later, I needed to have my hands free so I could act fast in case something happened….
Seeing our predicament, Hanna-sensei came to our rescue. She took the child from Ren’s arms and smiled at Ren as she praised how well Ren was in handling the children. Maybe because he was feeling embarrassed from the praise, Ren’s cheeks became beet red. He looked really adorable.
“Umm… Although I won’t tell Altair and the others to launch an attack or anything, I’m worried some children will feel afraid because they look similar to a monster. I’m thinking of letting them see the magical beasts from inside the room first then if it looks like they’re alright with it, they can go out to take a closer look at Altair and the others. Umm… There won’t be any children that will faint when they see a magical beast, right?”
Perhaps because he was unable to stand the fluffy and sweet atmosphere, Ren changed the subject.
Ah… There are certainly some children that ended up here because their parents were killed by monsters… I’m sure Ren is going to show his magical beast in their small form but it’s still better to let the children watch from inside first.
“Ah, I think your plan will work for the best. Well, I think it’ll be alright though.”
Ren seemed to be afraid that the children might faint when seeing Altair and the others small form but if they did, then they wouldn’t be able to stand the sight of a pet in a petshop or birds in the sky.

“Come on you guys. Let’s clear the table and then gather over there.”
After making sure all the brats had finished their snack, I told them to tidy up the table. Then I gathered them in one place.
Ah, Connie looks a little bit sleepy. Usually he should be taking a nap at this time but he always gets so excited and refuses to sleep whenever I’m coming over.
“I will take them out in their small form first, okay? …….. Then, I will take them out now….”
The other children that needed their nap time were already sleeping while the other children looked sharp and excited.
“Whoa! So cute!”
“They’re not scary at all!”
While I was stuck with my own thoughts, it seemed Ren had already summoned his magical beast out. The brats started sticking their face flat against the window as they looked outside. Rather than being afraid, it seemed they were excited because of how cute the beasts were.
“Hey, Sig-ani. Can we go out and touch them?”
“Yeah. Those guys are smart so you can’t just touch them all of a sudden, okay? You need to ask for permission properly before touching them, you got it?”
Mikal nodded his head after I warned him and then he, along with the rest of the children went outside in full spirits before I could even finish talking.
“This is Altair and this is Spica. Altair looks like he’s on fire but he keeps the temperature of his fire low enough so he won’t burn anyone. You can touch him if you want but remember, be gentle. Alright?”
“Whoa! So fluffy!”
“Cute!”
I also went outside and Ren was giving them the same warning as I did. Ida looked scared at first but maybe because she was encouraged by the sound of other children’s excitement, she also started touching Spica. Triggered by this, the other children also started pushing to be able to touch the beasts.
“Hey! Take turns! Don’t you all go touching them at the same time! You guys won’t like it if you are touched by a lot of people like that too, right?!”
Lucas stopped the magical beasts from being assaulted by a group of children. He made the children form a line so they could take turns touching the beasts.
As the children were taking turns touching both Spica and Altair, I could see they were trying to be gentle, just like what we had warned them. Altair and Spica seemed to be saying something to Ren but I couldn’t understand their words.
I hope they’re not talking about how they hate being touched by the children….
“You know, Frida. When I first saw you, I thought you had the same color as Spica. Turns out I was right, both of you have a beautiful color.”
“…… You’re right. It’s the same…”
“Yeah.”
Ren was talking to Frida, who always acted so docile and quiet. She usually didn’t have any expression but I could see a little smile floating on her face as she talked with Ren.

Mikal nodded his head after I warned him and then he, along with the rest of the children went outside in full spirits before I could even finish talking.
“This is Altair and this is Spica. Altair looks like he’s on fire but he keeps the temperature of his fire low enough so he won’t burn anyone. You can touch him if you want but remember, be gentle. Alright?”
“Whoa! So fluffy!”
“Cute!”
I also went outside and Ren was giving them the same warning as I did. Ida looked scared at first but maybe because she was encouraged by the sound of other children’s excitement, she also started touching Spica.
