Cain’s expression changed quickly. Soon, a blue light shot out from my wand.

“Argh!”

And a kobold that had sneaked up behind Cain twisted in agony and collapsed. It was an instant-death spell, but because I didn’t have enough mana or because the spell was not working well, the kobold convulsed painfully instead of dying. Cain flicked his finger to cut off its breath.

“I’m surprised, Mana vessel. I thought it was that for this teacher.”

Cain made a chuckling sound. I snorted.

I looked around at the kobolds who had lost their lives. Cain said killing them was a natural thing for humans, and they had tried to attack us, but my heart felt damp and heavy. It felt strange.

“Now, we’ll collect the mana stones. This might look a bit disgusting. We need to precisely cut around the heart area, so you sit over there in that corner.”

Cain gestured towards a distant spot as if dealing with a child. Not wanting to witness hearts being cut open, I obediently went outside the kobold village.

Sitting behind the tree where Cain and I had hidden before, I turned my gaze towards the village. Cain was seen placing his palms on the bodies of each monster one by one.

‘I guess he’s not directly cutting into their chests.’

When he gently touched them, a small green stone would float up from the kobold’s chest, hovering in the air. It seemed like the mana stone automatically pierced through the chest and popped out. The bones cracked, the skin tore, and blood splattered in the process. Surprisingly, the blood was a deep crimson, the same color as human blood. If I had seen that blood during the battle, I probably wouldn’t have been able to cast any spells. I wonder if this can really be called a battle. Simply uttering a few known spells would make the opponent collapse as if it were a game.

‘This is a bit dangerous.’

Numbness of feeling about the death of others. It might be the annihilation of humanity. I recalled Cain’s eyes shining brightly without a sense of guilt.

Even though I was learning magic, I felt the need to be cautious about hunting monsters in the future. As I pondered on these serious thoughts, rustling sounds echoed from within the forest. Reflexively, my body stiffened, and my shoulders tensed.

I tightly gripped my wand and rose from under the tree. I considered calling Cain, but he was busy extracting mana stones from the kobolds, kneeling with one knee. His face and upper body were quite stained with the kobold’s blood.

I bit my lip and murmured “Ardeo”,silently. It was the spell with the highest success rate and considerable firepower. As I took each step, a steep cliff came into view. When walking down the road earlier, I didn’t realize the ground was breaking off. I didn’t particularly have a fear of heights but still, I felt a chill on the back of my neck as I looked down, where I could’ve at least broken a bone If I fell..

At that moment, a rustling sound nearby was heard again. A bush in a corner, swaying oddly, caught my attention. I carefully aimed my wand. I had to confirm the identity before casting the spell. Dealing with fire magic, if I mistakenly aimed an explosive spell at the wrong patch of grass, it could lead to a forest fire.

Rustle, rustle.

For a while, only the tense movements continued. Judging by the way the bushes were shaking, it seemed like a very small opponent, but I didn’t know the types of monsters living here. If it happened to be a small creature with deadly abilities, it could be a serious problem. A bead of sweat trickled down my forehead. That’s when it happened.

“Squeak!”

From the bushes, a round bundle of fur popped out. It was fluffy and white…

“A rabbit?”

“Kyuu!”

“Ha…”

It was just an ordinary rabbit. It was nibbling on grass, and bits of it stuck out between its small, triangular mouth. The rabbit looked up at me and continued munching. Each movement of its small chubby mouth steadily reduced the length of the grass. It ate so peacefully and calmly that I felt pitiful for being tense and cautious.

Well, it was a mountain after all. There’s no way only monsters lived in the mountains.

I lowered the hand that was holding the wand in embarrassment. As I relaxed my guard and shrugged my shoulders, the rabbit let out another cute squeak.

“Kyuuu.”

The rabbit cried again.

He cries so cutely. I thought with a smile But did rabbits originally cry like that? Dogs go woof, cats go meow, and rabbits go…

“Hmm?”

Rabbits don’t usually go ‘kyuu,’ right?

“Kyuuu”

The cute squeaky sound felt somewhat unnatural, and as soon as I noticed it, a chill ran down my spine. I remained crouched, startled, and in my haste to move back, I stumbled and fell on my butt.

The rabbit hopped towards me, its red eyes glowing. Its round, fluffy body lightly approached me and stopped in front of my hand.

“Kyuu!”

The rabbit playfully nibbled on the end of the wand I held in my hand. Then, it began to gnaw and swallow the wand at an astonishing speed.

Crunch, crunch, crunch.

“Wait, wait! Hey! No! That’s my wand!”

“What?”

The wand disappeared into the rabbit’s mouth, much like the grass before. I grabbed the remaining part of the wand and pulled it with all my might. However, the rabbit’s strength was unbelievably strong. The rabbit continued to chew on the wand without a care, and I had no choice but to let go, as it seemed like it might eat my hand as well.

“It ate it all…”

As I spoke in a daze, the rabbit squeaked again, as if receiving praise. Suddenly, the rabbit opened its mouth wide and yawned. Ahh. Honestly, even in the midst of this, it was cute. If only I hadn’t made eye contact with someone inside its throat, it would have been even cuter.

“Huh…?”

Two eyeballs inside the rabbit’s throat rolled around.

“Uh, uh, uh?”

While I was frozen at the incomprehension, the rabbit squeaked again. No, it wasn’t the rabbit crying. It was the sound coming from ‘that thing’ inside the rabbit’s throat.

As soon as I became aware of ‘its’ existence, the rabbit’s mouth suddenly opened abnormally wide. No, it wasn’t opened, it was torn. A bald dwarf with green skin came out from the rabbit’s mouth. The thin body had almost no flesh, but the eyes were abnormally large, taking up half of the face.

Roll.

The bloodshot eyes of the creature inside the rabbit’s throat glanced around. It seemed to be checking if there was anyone around.

“Kkyu.”

The creature, resembling a bizarre mix of a child and a miniature-sized elder, made an unexpectedly cute sound. It stared at me with its large eyes, as if wanting to enter my mouth.

“Sign.”

Without thinking, I covered my mouth with both hands and quickly stood up. I needed to reach Cain. Cain could use magic without a wand, and he probably knew the identity of this monster.

I turned around and ran at full speed. Although I had removed my hands from my mouth, biting and chewing as I ran, Cain wasn’t far away. All I needed was to be in Cain’s line of sight. I had to get to Cain quickly. Cain, Cain!

And the next moment, I stepped into the empty void hidden under the thick bushes. Which meant I fell off the cliff.

***

“Ugh…”

Fortunately, there were no sharp thorns or solid rocks below the cliff. It wasn’t a steep drop, but a mountainous area with steep slopes, filled with trees. So I fell for a while, bumping my body here and there.

My whole body aches. My right ankle hurts badly. Although it looked like a minor injury, it was difficult to move the ankle, and it would probably swell and bruise over time.

“This is bad…”

I looked up into the pitch-black above, unable to determine where I had fallen. The mountain was too high, and the dense trees made it difficult to know my location. If I had my wand, I would have tried to light a fire and smoke but the wand had been consumed by the creature, whether it was the rabbit or a monster.

“Ardeo.”

I tried concentrating my mind and reciting the incantation, but it was futile. After calling “Ardeo” about thirty times, I gave up. Uttering meaningless spells only heightened the anxiety and worry within me.

I turned my head to survey the surroundings. Honestly, I couldn’t tell much difference from what I saw before falling… It was all grass and trees. A sigh escaped involuntarily. Nevertheless, I couldn’t spot any monsters, which was a relief.

Rustle.

Though the monsters seemed like they weren’t there… a rustling sound was heard behind me, quickly approaching. The noise of something pushing through the grass was much louder and louder than the creature’s rabbit-like sound from earlier. Along with the throbbing pain in my ankle, tears welled up.

Yeah, yeah, I’m really screwed.
