Is it a monster or a wild animal?

If I were to hope, it could be Cain coming to find me. However, I just fell, and even if Cain heard the sound of my fall, the likelihood of him immediately coming to this place, and not from above but from the bushes behind, seemed slim.

I’ve sprained my ankle. Even if that weren’t the case, I knew nothing about martial arts. A complete novice, a trainee mage who couldn’t use magic without a wand, and the system might help me, but the system may help me, but the system only pops up when I’m dealing with a male lead.

If that thing is a monster or a wild animal, I’ll die here.

As that thought crossed my mind, defeat rather than fear arose. The ability to feel fear and hope only existed when there was a chance to escape. At this moment, I was just a prey, weak and trembling before the predator.

Rustle.

Finally, the object revealed itself from the bushes. It wasn’t a beast. It was much taller, wearing a black cloth over its face—revealing only its eyes.

“Huh?”

I doubted my own eyes. Standing before me was not a monster but just a human male. The man lowered the black cloth covering his mouth and greeted me with a friendly smile.

“Hello? Do you need help?”

I looked up at the smiling man in front of me. Even without looking in the mirror, I could see how stupid my expression was right now.

“Are you hurt by chance?”

I… knew who he was. Even in this dark forest, his bright and handsome face, refreshing and charming smile, and the pink eyes that did not match his dark hair were shining alone. And the last male protagonist, the only one I could not defeat while playing the game in real life.

[Andrea Sloane / Assassination Guild Leader / Secret Shadow / favorability 75]

“Cough! Cough, cough.”

I read the personal character information above his head. I was so surprised, I started coughing like crazy.

Andrea Sloane

“Are you okay?”

His kind and concerned eyes quickly filled with worry. He carefully sat in front of me and patted my back. However, I was stuck in one place no matter what he did. I was fixed on one thing.

Favorability 75.

What the hell is this… What’s happened?

Now, the fear that didn’t occur to me earlier settled in. It was a natural emotion when witnessing something incomprehensible to humans. I was meeting Andrea for the first time here, so why on earth is the favorability…

“Oh my, you must be scared of me.”

Andrea said, drooping his eyebrows. He removed his hand from my back and stepped back a few steps. Then, he knelt on one knee, brought his fist respectfully to his chest—a gesture of knightly courtesy.

“I am Sir Edward Chadwick, a knight of the Count Guana family. I came here with the knight order for the regular monster subjugation and heard a sound of something crashing while finishing up in the rear. However, I didn’t expect to find a person.”

He said he thought it might be a beast at best and eagerly rushed here, thinking of roasting it for food.

“If it were a monster, we were planning to finish it off.”

Then, he exclaimed as he shouted with a bright expression.

“If it’s a monster, let’s finish it!”

“……?”

“Lime is perfect! If it’s a monster, it’s over~ Haha.”

“……?”

What, what’s going on? Was he always this kind of guy who said nonsense like this?

It made sense for him to hide his identity as a knight from the Guarr or Guana family. As mentioned in his character information, Andrea was the leader of the largest and most famous assassination guild in the empire. He wouldn’t easily reveal his true identity.

Anyone who wanted to discreetly and definitively kill someone sought Andrea’s guild, “Cruel.” The name Cruel was widely known enough that even beggars on the street know about it. When a child cried, people would say” Cruel is coming you get you!” to make him stop. If a mysterious death occurred, it was common to say, “Did Cruel pay a visit?”

Assassination. Secretly killing people. Despite the meaning, the ironically famous guild Cruel was shrouded in mystery. However, the reason Cruel was feared was because, despite its fame, the identity of their assassins had never surfaced. They successfully completed 90% of their missions, and the remaining 10%, who failed, used a lethal poison to hide their identities by taking their own lives.

And before me stood Andrea, the most secretive assassin commanding the guild. While the game didn’t explicitly say the fighting power of each male protagonist, being an adult game, I was convinced that he was the strongest among the five male protagonists.

“First, we should get out of the mountains and get you treated.”

Andrea gestured towards my ankle. He turned his back to me and sat down.

“Well then, hop on.”

“Yes?”

It felt eerie for some reason. Perhaps because in the game, Andrea was…

“Hey, it’s okay. I’m sturdy enough.”

He was the character who received an assassination request to kill Del Narcisse.

“Huh?”

Andrea tilted his face slightly with a gentle smile, a gesture that seemed to ask why I wasn’t getting on.

If I hesitated any longer, suspicions might arise. Normally, someone in distress, especially when stranded, would request help from a knight belonging to a noble family. Besides, Andrea couldn’t kill me anyway. Strangely, his favorability was already at 75.

I reached out with trembling hands, encircling Andrea’s neck and placing my weight on his back. Andrea laughed, supporting my thighs firmly as he stood up. I kept my neck straight and chest out, not leaning too much on him.

“Haha, it’s more uncomfortable for me if you do that. Please relax.”

“No, sir… I can’t cause you any more trouble. Um, My companions are nearby. So, if you could help me move to a safe place and send a signal to them, that would be enough…”

“Ah, I see. Understood.”

Surprisingly, Andrea readily accepted my request.

“Judging by your attire, you seem to be a mage from the Magic Tower. How did you end up traveling alone?”

His question carried genuine curiosity and goodwill.

“I heard strange noises, so I wanted to check. There was a small, cute rabbit. But suddenly, a bald dwarf came out of the rabbit’s mouth. His eyes were so big. Gray skin, and really, incredibly grotesque-looking…”

“Hmm, it seems like you encountered a Vermis.”

“Vermis?”

“It’s a creature that lives as a parasite inside animals. It has an enormous appetite, constantly needing to eat something because it lacks a stomach. That’s why it must inhabit another body.”

I recalled the Vermis staring at my mouth. It gave me shivers.

“It seemed like it tried to enter my body. I was running away from it and ended up falling off the cliff.”

“That was a really dangerous situation.”

After saying that, he muttered quietly, “What the hell is that guy up to?…”

His voice was chillingly cold. I pretended not to hear, coughing awkwardly.

“First, let’s get out of the Studdle Mountains. We can go to the nearest village and figure out a way to send word to your party.”

“Oh, no, I don’t need to go down to the village. We can just shoot a signal or produce smoke nearby. My party is quite perceptive…”

I mentioned the robe I was wearing, but Andrea probably already knew that I had entered the Magic Tower. Rumors about the Crown Princess’s failed marriage by entering the Magic Tower must have spread through the empire. So, he likely guessed that my party was the lord of the Magic Tower.

“But right now, the mage is injured, and this area is infested with monsters. As you can see, I stayed behind to handle the small children, but my skills aren’t that great.”

Andrea spoke as if he was embarrassed.

“He’s quite amusing, being the leader of an assassination guild.”

It felt like there was a hidden agenda here. He clearly wanted to separate me from Cain. Probably, he didn’t intend to kill me. In the game, Andrea received an assassination request, but he didn’t kill Del Narcissus. To be precise, he went to kill him but couldn’t bring himself to stab the beautiful face of Del sleeping peacefully in the moonlight. That was the beginning of Andrea’s story.

Even if it wasn’t part of the game story, someone with a liking of 75 towards me wouldn’t make such a choice. Rather, if he didn’t, it would lean towards an adult content route… Whatever choice he was contemplating sent shivers down my spine.

“Alright, I understand. I’ll do that, so don’t tremble.”

Andrea quickly assured me, “I won’t do anything that would harm you, mage.”

A bitter smile followed his words. After that, Andrea didn’t speak to me further. He silently carried me through the woods, parting the trees. However, his last words lingered in my mind—his promise that he wouldn’t do anything to hurt me.
