It’s been a couple of days since they had set sail on the Going Merry and Usopp couldn’t help but feel exhausted. The moment he left the island he was filled with excitement about all the adventures he would be going to partake in along with Luffy and the rest of the crew but who would have thought that the first thing he would encounter after getting on the ship would be sea sickness?
The regular rolling and pitching of the ship was something his body wasn’t used to at all which led to him puking all the things he ate just a few hours after the start of the journey. Usopp sighed as he looked at the horizon while resting his body on the deck railing.
“Here, I’ve made some lemonade, it will make you feel better,” Nami handed Usopp a glass.
“Thanks, Nami,” Usopp said.
“No need, that would be a hundred berries including the service charge,” Nami said with a smile.
“How generous of you…put it on my tab.” Usopp said with a sigh clearly not in the mood to argue with her as he already had his share dealing with this money grubber.
“No problem!” Nami grinned as she took out a notepad and started writing something on it. “Alright, after adding this you owe me a total of two thousand three hundred and fifty berries,” Nami said with a serious expression.
“I’ll remember that, don’t worry,” Usopp said even though he had no plans to give them to her.
With that Nami told him to rest properly saying that she didn’t want the money he owed to her to be gone because of his demise which left Usopp with no words to rebuke.
“It’s done!” Luffy’s voice spread all around the ship attracting everybody’s attention.
“Ahhh-hhaaa, what happened Luffy?” Zoro asked after his nap was broken off because of Luffy’s shout.
“It’s done, This is our Pirate flag! Hehe~” Luffy showed Zoro the pirate flag with a proud smile on his face as Nami and Usopp slowly arrived at the scene.
“The hell is that disgusting thing?” Nami asked without holding anything back.
“What do you mean by disgusting? That’s our pirate flag!” Luffy rebuked in anger.
“You call that a pirate flag? Even an ant won’t be scared by how funny it looks. A pirate’s flag is supposed to be domineering or unique. The one you’ve created looks like someone smeared some paint over their failed attempt…” Nami said and as she continued going on Luffy’s face slowly lost its earlier proud expression.
“She’s right Luffy…we should think of something else,” Zoro suggested.
“Alright…sigh,” Luffy said with a sigh as all his efforts went to waste.
“Well, it doesn’t look so bad. We just need to make it a bit properly and it would fit the criteria of ‘Scary and Unique’ which Nami suggested just now.” Usopp said which attracted everybody’s attention.
“You can do that?!” Luffy asked excitedly.
“Mhmm Give me the paintbrush and paints along with a fresh piece of black cloth,” Usopp said and not even a minute passed as all the required materials had been brought by Luffy.
Usopp sat down on the ground with the brush and started drawing. He wasn’t an artist but in his earlier life, he had the straw hat pirate flag symbol imprinted on his phone’s back cover so he was very familiar with it.
He had always been a bit dissatisfied with how cute the symbol looked so with this opportunity he was going to change it. His brush moved all over the piece of cloth in the way he wanted to and after around thirty minutes, the end result was ready.
“That looks amazinggg Usopp!” Luffy shouted while patting Usopp's shoulders proudly.
“It indeed does,” Zoro added.
“So he’s good at painting as well? Should I make him sell his paintings to earn me some quick berries?” Nami said to herself while appreciating the pirate symbol that had been created by Ussop.
The skull of the symbol formed this time looked quite spine-chilling thanks to the grey shading that Usopp had done on it and adding a straw hat on top of its head gave this flag its unique look. It had the ability to induce fear in the eyes of the viewers because of how spine-chilling it looked and at the same time generate curiosity in their hearts because of the straw hat that looked so out of place.
After the paint had dried Luffy jumped to the top of the mast with the flag and tied it there with exhilaration. “From now on we’re officially pirates!” He shouted at the top of his lungs before coming to a pause in confusion. “Hey, wait a minute, we don’t have a name yet…”
Jumping down back on the deck he asked Zoro in confusion “Hey Zoro? Do we have a name?”
“Name? Aren’t we just pirates? Why think of a name other than just pirates?” Zoro said in an uncaring manner.
“No! We must have a name!” Luffy said not accepting being called just ‘pirates’ by others. Usopp who was there along with Zoro smiled in his heart as he said “That Strawhat is very precious to you isn’t it?”
“Of course, Shanks gave it to me!” Luffy said proudly.
“It’s a pirate he met when he was a child, apparently he’s quite powerful,” Nami explained it to Usopp.
Usopp nodded hearing this and continued “Since it’s like that then how about calling ourselves ‘Straw hat Pirates’?”
“Straw Hat? Straw Hat Pirates? This is it! Usopp you’re incredible! Not only did you help me with the flag but also with naming my crew.” Luffy praised Usopp without holding back.
“Well, I have my strong points,” Usopp said while grinning.
“Straw Hat Pirates huh? Sounds pretty interesting.” Nami voiced out her opnion.
After deciding on the name of the pirate crew successfully Usopp, Zoro and Luffy started working on painting the sail of the ship with the pirate symbol which took a lot of time because of how huge it was.
At the end of the day, Usopp was quite happy with the results. He was not guilty about changing the symbol of the pirate crew that was loved by so many in his previous life. It was he who got reincarnated and not them so why should he care?
Now that he remembered it was also Usopp who came up with the pirate flag and now that he was in Usopp’s body it was only right for him to go with what he wanted. If anyone had any problems then they are welcome to exchange bodies with him provided they’re ready to view the world with a long nose blocking some of their vision.
