Under the warmth of the fire that had been set near the hideout Nami slowly opened up her eyes while rubbing them. As she did the memories of earlier slowly entered her mind.
“You’re awake?” Usopp who was sitting right beside her looked into Nami’s eyes as he said.
“Y-yes…” Nami said in her drowsy state.
Seeing this Usopp gently and patiently explained to her about Brogy and that she had nothing to fear from him. He ended his explanation by telling her that they were currently in Brogy’s hideout after having been invited by him. Fortunately, Brogy had gone to collect some meat from the forest which made it easier for Usopp to explain everything to Nami.
After finding out the whole truth about the matter Nami couldn’t help but feel a bit embarrassed about the way she collapsed in front of Usopp when she first saw Brogy.
“What’s that?” Nami asked suddenly seeing a fruit that was placed beside Usopp on the log in which they currently were sitting.
Seeing the direction in which Nami’s gaze was directed Usopp couldn’t help but grin as he grabbed the fruit and gave it to Nami as he said, “Why don’t you guess?”
Seeing the expression on Usopp's face Nami could clearly feel that something was special about this fruit and the moment she grabbed hold of it her hand went down a bit. The fruit though looked light but was even heavier than a coconut!
Needless to say, this naturally increased Nami’s curiosity as she tinkered with the fruit while looking at it from different angles. Just when Nami was about to give up a sudden thought entered her mind ‘Could this be?!’
She turned her head towards Usopp and asked “Could this be a devil fruit!”
Seeing the smiling face of Usopp that didn’t deny it Nami’s face became delightful as she hurriedly said, “What are you waiting for then?! Quickly eat it! With its powers, it would be much easier for you to deal with all the future troubles that will come your way,”
With the coming of this fruit Nami’s tensed heart relieved a bit. Since the moment she saw that bounty poster she couldn’t help but constantly feel worried even after Usopp’s words. Thus, when she saw this devil fruit the first thought that entered her mind was to make Usopp eat it.
How could Usopp not realize what was going on in Nami’s mind. He gently placed his hand on Nami’s cheeks and he caressed them with his thumb. “Silly woman, didn’t I tell you to stop worrying about me a few days ago?”
“It’s not me who’s silly it’s you! Do you think I’ll stop worrying about you just because you told me to?” Nami rebuked.
Seeing her face as she rebuked his words made a warm feeling rise up in Usopp’s heart as he chuckled.
“What are you laughin-“ Nami wanted this to break into an argument but was stopped by Usopp’s next words.
“Eat it,” Usopp’s clear voice that carried no reservation sounded out.
“What?” Nami’s dazed voice sounded out.
“I said I want you to eat the devil fruit Nami,” Usopp's voice once again entered Nami’s ears and she finally was able to comprehend those words.
Naturally, the moment she comprehended those words a refusal was about to come straight out of her mouth but Usopp’s index finger pressed her lips tightly as he said, “Shhh, I don’t care what you got to say. Just the way you’re concerned about my safety I’m also concerned about your safety Nami. The last thing I want is for you to get hurt so listen to me alright?”
“B-but I can still handle myself by hiding but you have your face on that bounty poster,” Nami still wasn’t very convinced even though Usopp’s earlier words overwhelmed her with emotions and almost made her choke on her words.
“Sigh…let me explain it to you this way then. Suppose I’m in a battle with some dangerous marine or pirate in the future. At that time shouldn’t I be very focused on the task in order to not get hurt or worse killed?” Usopp asked Nami.
“Of course, you should always be a hundred per cent focused when dealing with such dangerous situations,” Nami replied as a matter of fact.
“Now suppose during that battle I’m constantly worried about your safety because the pirates or marines might end up targeting you when I’m distracted. Would I be able to still be completely focused on the battle?” Usopp asked with a gentle tone.
“This…” Nami by now had understood what Usopp was meaning to say and didn’t know how to reply.
Usopp just smiled and caressed her head as he said “You might someday even be able to save my life with those powers you acquire,”
The moment Nami heard those words all of her hesitancy went away as she turned her head to focus on the fruit that was in her. Seeing this even Usopp couldn’t help but feel that he wasted his time by telling her that long story earlier and instead should have just said this sentence.
After observing the grey-coloured fruit that was placed in her hand for a while Nami finally took in a deep breath to ready herself. The moment she exhaled she started taking huge bites of the fruit and from the grimacing face she was making it was clear that the fruit tasted like everything but good.
Thanks to the great determination she carried Nami was able to fully eat the fruit but even so, she was only human. She started gagging trying to vomit the fruit out of her because of how horrendous the taste it left on her tongue was but thinking that this might cause her to not get the devil fruit powers she also showed reluctance.
Seeing this struggle-filled expression on her face Usopp couldn’t help but be amused. He thought of telling her that it would have been just enough if she had taken only a bite but seeing the scenario now, it won’t be a good idea now, would it?
While Nami was gagging and coughing she suddenly felt lightheaded. The feeling was very similar to earlier when she was about to fall unconscious but this time she didn’t. She tried to examine her body but found out that her body was slowly turning into mist as the weight of her whole body decreased. This scared Nami and she quickly closed her eyes in fear.
When she opened her eyes, she saw Usopp’s standing right in front of her. He was currently looking at her with great delight as he said while looking at the screen of mist in front of his eyes, “Mist-Mist fruit…I can be relieved with that.”
A/N: As you may have already noticed, the updates are slowing down. Well, I'm going to stick to one chapter a week at a minimum for now. I have an important exam on which my future depends in September so I would be forcing myself to go over the syllabus diligently leaving me with very little time to think about the fanfic.
