“Damn it! Why did we have to come back so early?” Fan Newblade grit his teeth.

“You should be careful with what you say,” Third Elder Newblade said, looking down at Fan Newblade. Fan, his son, had always been someone who wore his emotions on his sleeves. “If the Patriarch hears of your complaints, he’ll send you to isolated training for six months.”

“Father, don’t you think that the Patriarch has been-“

“Fan!” Third Elder Newblade exclaimed to his son, cutting the young man off. “Watch your words.” He glared down at his son.

Fan Newblade cowered under his father’s gaze, which softened moments later. “Yes, father.”

“You need to call me Third Elder when we’re out,” Third Elder said, leading his son out of the cave and he saw all the people who were stationed outside.

“What’s this? The Newblades have come out?” It was a member of the Bluewind family, Seventh Elder Bluewind. “Don’t tell me you believed in the word of the crippled Arrayist?”

The other Arrayists were around, and Third Elder Newblade gave them a quick glance. “It just so happens that there weren’t many treasures inside which intrigued us, so we decided to return.” He had to be diplomatic, even if it meant lowering himself slightly in front of the Arrayists.

First Elder Wildroar roared with laughter. “Not many treasures? What treasures did you find?” The man grinned wildly.

“Just some trinkets and a few gold coins,” Third Elder said. In truth, they had found a few treasures which made it worth it for them to enter, but they didn’t have much time to gain much more. Luckily, most of the people left the lesser treasures to explore deeper, so they were able to scoop some decent items.

“Where’s your third member?” First Elder Wildroar asked.

“He remained inside to try his lu-“

The ground rumbled wildly and the people all around looked towards the array as it began to glow.

“What’s going on?”

“The array is-“

Those with the quickest reactions managed to pull away from the array in time. The Martial Masters who had been looking over the entrance, grabbed the Arrayists to safety, and the stronger members tried to grab their closest allies as the array exploded.

“Father!” Fan said as his father had pushed him aside and had taken a heavy blow from the array exploding. “Father!”

“You damn brat!” Third Elder Newblade picked up his son and shook the young man around. “Didn’t I tell you to call me Third Elder in public!”

“But! But! Your arm!” Fan looked at his father, whose left arm currently lay many metres away.

“What’s an arm or two when it comes to the life of my son?” He dropped his son and then looked away. “Though you’re such a fool, perhaps my arm was worth more?”

“Are you alright, Third Elder Newblade?” Wildroar asked.

“I’m fine.”

“That must have been why Arrayist Ken warned us.” Wildroar said. He approached the cave, which had been blown apart, and started to move the rocks to help the people who had been buried in. He had felt a few ki signatures from within the cave as the array exploded, meaning a few others had also heeded the warning.

“This must have been all the cripple’s fault!” Seventh Elder Bluewind exclaimed, letting everyone hear, sowing the seeds.

“If you are done talking your nonsense, come and assist the survivors.”

Seventh Elder Bluewind huffed, glaring at the First Elder, but seeing the wild look in the man’s eyes, he relented and did as the First Elder asked. A few others also came to assist, though he was already planning on what to say to the family in order to deal with the cripple.

Wildroar noted the hostility from the Bluewind beside him.

[…]

All the while, Ken had finally left the town. He, along with his group, were making their way to the next town. They wouldn’t get to it tonight, as it would take at least ten hours, including stops for a break, though that didn’t matter so much to him. The next town over wouldn’t be their last stop.

“Are you sure you wish to leave so late?” Yue asked.

“Yes,” he replied. “Right now, the array should have exploded, and I’ll be blamed. They will use it as justification to attack me at best, and at worst, they’ll find others who will resent me, and will send people after me secretly.”

“You don’t seem afraid. Is it to do with the arrays?”

“Yes, but I think we also have enough Martial Experts to deal with whoever they send. Well, as long as they don’t send a Martial Master.”

“If they do send a Martial Master…”

Ken shook his head. “Then I’ll buy as much time as I can, but you’d better pray for a clean and painless death.”

Nana and Yue looked between one another. Chandi reached over and placed her hand on Yue’s. Emerald placed her head on Ken’s shoulder.

“I won’t let anyone hurt you,” the pair of them said.

Ken looked to Chandi. “Shouldn’t you be saying that to me?”

Chandi blushed. “Forgive me, master. I didn’t mean to…”

“It’s alright.” Ken smiled and reached up to pet her head. “It seems that your heart comes before your duty, which is a good thing.”

“I’ll definitely protect master as well!” She nodded her head.

“I know you will. You did well with protecting Yue and Nana before.” He brushed along her ear and then tickled it.

“It was only my job, master…”

“Yes, but you did a good job.”

“Patriarch Newblade assisted in calming the others down before they could continue, and so did the Town Lord.”

“I hope they managed to take my words in consideration…”

“That damned crippled bastard!”

“He must have ruined the array!”

“To think he’d sabotage the array…”

The Arrayists were, as expected, blaming the cripple who wasn’t around. Seeing them drum up support, Seventh Elder Bluewind smiled.

“You’re right!” Seventh Elder Bluewind grinned wide. “It’s all his fault. I knew we couldn’t trust him! We should-“ His voice cut off as he felt a mass of killing intent blanket the entire area.

He, and the others, turned to see the Town Lord approaching, who was emanating so much killing intent, that those who were weaker were keeling over because of it.

“Don’t you think that’s a little inappropriate,” the First Elder of the Redwind family asked, who was a Martial Master.

The Town Lord turned to face him, his eyes still nearly blank from the utter rage he was feeling.

Then came a gasp from the rubble and some coughing and spluttering. The killing intent from the Town Lord completely disappeared as he rushed over to the young woman.

“Tia!” He used his ki to blast away the nearby earth around her and quickly pulled her to his chest. “I told you to come back sooner!”

“Sorry, grandfather. I-I…”

“It’s alright now.” He held her to his chest as she held him tight.

“Uncle is…”

“He didn’t come out?”

Tia shook her head, tears beginning to form in her eyes.

“Then we must pray for his fortune, and hope the dungeon has another way out.” The Town Lord brushed her hair gently. “If something would have happened to you, what would I have said to your father?”

“I’m sorry for forcing you to let me go…” Tia recalled how much she acted up, even pouting at him before in order to let her go.

“It’s alright. Isn’t it my responsibility to make sure I spoil you safely?”

The others who had just managed to leave in time were beginning to escape the rubble. Some of them were heavily injured, whilst others were unconscious and near dying. Luckily, their families were all around to assist them.

However, many of the families had not heeded the warning of the crippled Arrayist, and had suffered quite a large blow.

“Well, that’s that.” Wildroar crossed his arms. “I will have to pray for my brother’s fortune.” He closed his eyes, thinking about his younger brother, who had gone inside to seek his fortune.

Wildwind looked towards his distance cousin, and nodded his head. None of their family members would have been caught dead trying to take the safe route out. They had already resigned themselves to their family’s fate.

Bluewind was eyeing up the other families who were currently in shock and grieving.

[Good. Good.]

It seemed he had quite the few allies to draw into a plot.

[Just you wait, you damned crippled fool!]
