“We knew we could count on you, Town Lord,” Ken said after speaking with the Town Lord about various matters. “We should go and make sure that our slaves aren’t starting any trouble.”

Once they had excused themselves, the Town Lord watched as they left. He could see the backs of the two Alchemists, ignoring the guard. He gathered that the guard wasn’t anyone special, though they were a Martial Warrior they had very little ability.

Speaking to Ken told the Town Lord two things. Those clear eyes which stared into him were dangerous and resolute.

[I can only hope to forge a relationship with him, or I must kill him.]

This was what the Town Lord concluded. If he were to make an enemy of Ken, he could feel the danger his town would be in. He closed his eyes and thought deeply for a short while.

“Left Sword,” the Town Lord called out.

Beside him appeared a Low Martial Master, with a heavy red cloak so that everyone could see him if he were to ever appear. “Town Lord,” he replied back.

“That young man, what do you think about him?”

“I am not privy to the note he had given you, but there’s something else to him.”

“I don’t know whether I should assist him or kill him.”

“Whatever you choose, I will follow through with it.”

The Town Lord closed his eyes and looked up towards the sky. “My people suffer from the Beast Hordes every few years, and the Alchemists bleed them dry. A young man appears beside a beautiful woman,” the Town Lord quickly coughed, “beside a great Alchemist, and he offers me great favour to help the people.”

“If he is as kind hearted as you think he is, we should help him.”

“He’s not kind hearted, but he does have a kind heart.”

Left Sword understood what the Town Lord meant. He has a kind heart, but he’ll kill when it comes down to it. It was the heart of someone willing to lead.

[It seems that paper had something important on it.]

“Left Sword.”

“Yes, Town Lord?”

“Out of all my family, there are few people who I can trust. I can count the number of people I can trust on just a single hand, and you are one of those people.”

“As you always say.”

[Yes, but that’s because it sounds cool.]

“Assist him if he gets into trouble. I will allow you to pick how you wish to assist him. Consider him an investment into the future of our town.”

[An investment?]

He had never heard the Town Lord speak in such a way. To think the young man could make him utter such words, he must be truly dangerous.

“I will do as you command.” The man placed his hands together in respect.

The Town Lord nodded to dismiss him, causing him to disappear from beside the Town Lord.

[That young man, I hope he ends up being a great boon for my family and town.]

He sighed.

[No need to think about it.]

He looked to the three empty tea cups.

[That tea may have been some of the best tea I’ve ever had.]

The Town Lord smiled.

[Father. Mother. Perhaps I was wrong. This life that you’ve given to me, allow this son to thank-]

“Town Lord! Emergency!” A guard skid nearby and stood at attention.

“…”

[Nevermind! I hate this! Why did you give birth to me, mother? Father! Why were you so virile in your youth!]

“Disciple Ken, we should send some pills to the Alchemist Pavilion,” Emerald said as they walked out.

Ken thought about what she said. Last time, the Alchemists had been quite rude to them. “That’s a good idea, Master Emerald.” Ken nodded his head.

There were quite a few things that he could offer to the Alchemists, but he wondered what would be best. He thought it about it for a short while as they walked away from the Town Lord’s place.

“I’ll write a letter and hand them a few high grade pills.” Ken wondered if he should do more. “We’ll hand them over a low grade mountain pill as well.” He couldn’t be too cheap in offering to form relationships.

After meeting with the Town Lord, Ken was flush with cash again. Yuri would have no doubt be annoyed that he made a deal without her, especially since he wouldn’t be able to pay her the fee which she required.

He sighed, putting that to the back of his mind. He wrote down a letter, and went to the Escort Pavilion, hiring a pair of renowned Martial Experts to pass along the letter and the items.

[This punk wants us to be his errand boys? What a little shit!]

Ken placed down two sets of twenty silver coins. “This will be the payment for the matter.”

“Yes, Young Master!” the pair roared with delight.

Ken smiled. Having so much money meant he could do silly things like this. He had thought about dropping some gold coins, but he needed to be careful.

With the friendly ties established with the Alchemist Pavilion, he would be able to do some work in peace for a short while. He would need to continue sending gifts to the Alchemist Pavilion later on so they kept off his back, and if they didn’t…

He thought about how many pills he and Emerald could make. In a war between them, Ken and Emerald would come out as the victors.

“With that done, we should be okay.”

Emerald placed a hand on Ken’s shoulder. “We should be careful.” She then turned to the worker. “Show me a list of your Martial Masters.” Emerald knew how much money Ken had now, and since she had made many of the pills she sold off, she had some right to the money.

Once they had hired a Martial Master for a month, they returned to the inn where Yuri had negotiated with the innkeeper with her charisma.

“So you’re the Young Master who brought all these slaves?” The innkeeper stared at Ken.

“That’s right. Is anything the matter?”

“No, no, I’m just checking to see who the honoured guest was! Please take a seat!” The man shot a look to a worker who quickly rushed to Ken. “This is An, and she will be your personal maid for as long as you stay here.”

Ken chuckled. “Please forgive me for making so many demands of you. I hope that the compensation was worth it?” Ken asked.

Yuri gave Ken a look, her eyes gleaming. Seems like she had made a fair deal, one where she could keep a couple of coins.

“Yes, yes! More than worth it, Young Master! If you have anything else you require, please don’t hesitate to call for us!” The man bowed deeply and then went to work, bringing out some food for them.

“We made a deal with the Town Lord,” Ken said. “I’ll tell you the details, and I’ll put you in charge of it.”

“As you wish, Master Ken.” Yuri nodded as they ate together.

Once they were alone, Ken spoke to his women, informing Yuri of the deal. He also handed her 100 gold coins.

“What’s this for, Master?”

“Your cut.”

“My cut? But I didn’t do anything.”

“Then take it as a gift. I would have brought you along, and you would have made a good enough deal, so take this as an apology for giving you a difficult task with few rewards.”

“If that’s what Master wishes…” Yuri wasn’t sure if she should accept, but seeing Ken was going to be so stubborn, she accepted it. With this amount of coin, she would be able to go out and buy many items from the auction.

[It’s not like I need anything though… I’ll just save it.]

“Are you sure it was a good idea to tell the Town Lord about that?” Yuri asked.

“I think it’s best we get such things out of the way. If it was anyone else, I wouldn’t have done so. The promise I made to him probably caused him to warm up to us, and the various contracts in place.”

“Just how much money did you make from him?”

Ken smirked. “Let’s say that our gold total is about the same as before we bought all those slaves. However, we have lost a large number of pills…”

“How many pills?”

“Almost all of our high grade earth pills. I still have a large number of low grade and middle grade earth pills though.” He had enough pills that he could still create good relationships using what he had left.

“At least our food and shelter is sorted out for now. Are you sure the slaves will obey you?”

“The Martial Master will keep them in check.”

“What Martial Master?”

Ken smiled. “Looks like he’s doing his job well if you haven’t noticed him.”

“Did you really hire a Martial Master?”

“They’re not as expensive as you think,” Ken said. “Though he only wanted to work for a month.”

“How much was it?”

“Ten gold coins.”

[Ten gold coins.]

Ten gold coins was a lot of money for the typical person. Someone could live off of ten gold coins quite lavishly for a year, and if they were sensible, frugally for multiple years. Yet a Martial Master made that much in a single month.

[I wish I was a Martial Master.]

Yuri thought about how much money she could make in a single year, only to realise that Ken had given her 100 gold coins just that day.

[I wish I was a Martial Master and an Alchemist.]
