Chapter 54: A busy day of rest

Today is the day of rest, so I was going to have a non-stop day, but I decided to change my plans and move on.

If there was something I could do, I wouldn't have time to rest, would I?

The first place I turned to was Marcel's shop, which had been burned down in yesterday's commotion.

It was the day of repose, and it was still early in the morning, so there was no one to see, but there was Marcel-san standing there, still looking at a loss.

To be honest, it takes courage to talk to him, but the situation won't change if I'm shying away here.

I'll be bold enough to call out to him.

''Good morning, Marcel-san.''

Hmm? You're that monk from yesterday, what the hell are you doing here?

Yes, if there's anything I can do to help with the cleanup or anything else, I'd like to do it.

I don't even know where to start, I don't need you to help me. I mean, what happened to the person who burned down the store in the first place?

Yes, all the people who caused the ruckus are in the garrison cells.

Well why are you out there?

I was out of town when all the commotion happened so...

What, you weren't part of the fiasco yesterday?

Yes, I'm not part of the fuss.

So why are you apologizing for it?

It's...

I hesitated a bit, but I still had to come and rescue the rest of my classmates and get them accepted into the city, so I told Marcel-san what had happened so far, including the fact that I had been summoned and that my classmates had been tricked into slavery and held in bondage.

'Fool! Why do you want to keep such an important matter quiet!

I'm sorry, I'm sorry...

Oh, God...

Marcel-san scratched his head scrawled and then bowed his head to me.

'I'm sorry, even though I didn't know, I overdid it yesterday, give me a break.

Well, no... lift your head, Marcel.

It was Kent, and to be honest, I won't be able to forgive your mate for what he did anytime soon, but I'm not going to hold a grudge against you.

But it's what happened to the people I brought to Volzard.

Marcel-san gaped at me and then changed the direction of the conversation a bit.

'Kent, you're already working for the guild looking for a job, aren't you?'

Yes, I've done a lot of work for you.

Okay, what have you done so far?

'Well I was allowed to take part in harvesting at the Liebling farm, reloading the garm potatoes in the warehouse, apprenticing as a gardener, and the construction of the castle walls, just once.

Well, you've been doing a lot of work.

Yes, I'm learning a lot, thanks to you.

'Kent, someone who looks for a job like that, fulfills his job, and lives off the money is not recognized as a full-fledged person in Volzard. As soon as you sign up for the guild and get your card, it's like declaring that you're going to work and live on your own. They caused a ruckus without your knowledge, so why would you feel responsible for it? Even if you had brought them to Volzade, let them wipe their asses with you.

I think Marcel-san is certainly right.

But in front of the shop that has been burned down, I can't say yes, I see.......

''But........if the shop is in such a state.......''

''Huh... yeah, I know, I've tried to dress it up and make the people who caused the ruckus take responsibility... but frankly, I don't know what to do...''

Mr. Marcel looked up at the burned out shop with his arms folded and his expression clouded over.

I was standing alongside Marcel-san, looking up at the shop, when Reinhardt made a suggestion.

''Master Kent, why don't you give us a loan?''

"Loan"? You want a loan?

''Yes, how about Master Kent lending Lady Marcelle the money she needs for rebuilding and immediate needs at no interest, and Lady Marcelle will repay the money once the compensation from her classmates is paid?''

'I see... but do you think those idiots are going to step over it?

"Well, then, I thought it would be a good idea to hide the fact that I owe Master Kent a favor.

I see.

Without the money to rebuild the store, Marcel can't make ends meet.

But it would take too much time for the boys in my class to repay the loan.

However, if I pay the money without telling anyone, Marcel-san will not have any financial difficulties.

"Excuse me, Marcel-san, I have a proposition for you...

'Proposal? Kent, you can't say you're going to pay for it.

Yes, I thought you might say that...

When I talked about lending to my classmates without telling them, Marcel-san remained reluctant and thought about it.

''Honestly, it would be great if you guys could lend me some money, but do you have that kind of money in the first place?''

''Yes, my family members are quite powerful, so they've defeated a lot of things, so I have some money from selling magic stones and materials. It's money I was originally planning to use for my classmates' living expenses, so I don't mind spending it.

Well I'm going to ask you to do it, but I'm going to need the guild to step in between us.

To the guild?

'Oh, I can get a loan from the Guild, but I can get the Guild to take on the role of proof to prevent trouble with my personal money lending and borrowing.

''Okay, then........oh, I know you're off from the guild today, I'll be back tomorrow, will you go with me?''

Kent, that's what I'm asking you to do. Well, good luck with that.

Yes, it's nice to meet you too.

I shook hands with Marcel-san, and I feel like I was able to somehow repair the relationship.

''By the way, Marcel-san, this shop, we have no choice but to tear it down and rebuild it, don't we?

Well..........it's hard to repair the damage after it's burned down to this point.

The two-story Marcel's shop is in a state where the front side of the building has burned down and the second half of the building is somehow still standing.

Of course it would cost a lot of money to tear it down, wouldn't it?

Well, yeah, we'll pay for the demolition, plus the cost of disposing of the building materials.

Shouldn't I do this?

What? Do it, how?

I mean, all at once by using my family members, you know...

No, no, I wouldn't mind doing that if I could.

So can you just take out the stuff that's still working? I'll help you.

Well, I have to get it out of there anyway, so I'll need some help.

Then Marcel-san and I were taking out what we could still use, and with the help of some neighbors, we were able to finish before noon.

Marcel-san, do you have anything else to carry out?

Well, this is the last one, thank God. Well, you know, I guess we'll just have to start doing what we can do first.

Well, would you mind if we cleared the lot out?

Ha-ha-ha, good, just do it if you can. You'll be glad you did.

Yeah, Marcel-san, you don't seem to be taking it seriously at all, but let's get it over with at once.

''Well, Reinhardt, I'll bring out the dark shield, so once you smash it into the shadow world, move it around.

Yes, sir. All my men, let's pull out all our forces to help.

"Yeah, nice to meet you.

So, Marcel, would you mind stepping back for a moment?

Oh, what are you doing?

Okay, it's just... well, let's get started.

As soon as I gave the signal to everyone, I wrapped Marcel-san's shop with a dark shield in a swoop.

This way, the debris won't fly off and cause damage to the next building.

''Oh? What the hell is this, what's going on, Kent?

'Yes, I've enclosed it with dark magic so as not to disturb the neighbours.

The work seems to have begun, and then, boom, boom, a terrible sound of destruction can be heard.

Yeah, everyone seems to be working without restraint, so let's cover the top as well.

"Hey, hey, what's that noise, Kent, is your family doing this?

''Yes, my family members are all working on the demolition, so I'm sure it won't take long.

What? You weren't kidding, were you?

What, you didn't want to tear it down?

No, I don't mind that, but my family...

Yes, I can use necromancy to use the demons I defeat.

'Mr. Kent, it's done. I'll stash the scrap wood in the corner of the training grounds for the night.

"All right, thanks, guys.

When I received Reinhardt's news and deactivated the dark shield, the place where Marcel-san's shop had been had been cleaned up and cleared.

''Ehhh.......Wait, this.......''

Hey, Marcel, what's going on?

Hey, the store is gone!

Not only the owner of the store, Marcel-san, but also the neighbors who were helping to carry out the luggage rolled their eyes.

''Well........was it poorly done.......?''

No....not badly, but hey....

Marcelle looks at her neighbors and doesn't seem to know how to react to them.

'Well then, why don't you and all of your helpers join us for lunch? I'll buy you a drink.

"Hey, don't be silly, I'm not going to let you buy me a meal after all this time, I'm paying for it, come on guys, it'll give me a fresh start!

As Marcel lifted his spirits, the neighbors' freeze finally lifted.

'Oh, good, because I couldn't stand to see Marcel in a shambles.

Yeah, if they clear the lot, there's no way they can build on it.

The building will be up in a couple of weeks, so we'll just rent it out and get it ready for sale.

At lunch with my neighbors, I was naturally bombarded with questions.

I didn't want to hide anything anymore, so I told them everything they asked me, including the fact that I was summoned.

"Kent, man, that's like getting into a fight with the Riesenburgers all by yourself.

No, no, no, you're not alone, I have a stalwart family member with me.

Yes, he was active in the demolition process earlier.

Speaking of which, wasn't it you who was kissed by little Beatrice in the middle of the street?

Yeah it's just, uh...

I've decided to tell you all about it, but the subject is....

Well, Kent, you can't put it in the corner...

'No, no, Marcel, this little boy, apart from little Beatrice, he also had another light blue short-haired girl with him.

What? Hey Kent, what's this all about?

Well that's the thing...

As I was lingering in a lazy, cold sweat in the pursuit of everyone in the shopping district, I heard the sound of early bells.

Can-can-can, can-can-can, can-can-can.....

Just like with the rock ogre, it's the sound of a bell that signals the approach of a swarm of demons.

'Master Kent, it's a pack of orcs!'

Good, I was having trouble with the expense, so let's do a quick exercise as well.

"Buh-ha-ha, okay, well, I'll be right behind you then.

"Yeah, nice to meet you.

The people in the shopping district who were present rushed back to close their shops.

''Hey Kent, it's a bunch of demons, we need to evacuate.

Oh, don't worry, my people will take them down quickly.

What? What if you say that and we don't have any enemies, we're going to evacuate.

No, there is no way that my people can be slowed down by orcs, and I'll be watching over them, so if you'll excuse me, Marcel-san, please evacuate alone.

Watching over? You're going to the front lines?

Yes, that's all right. I'm very strong, despite my appearance.

Idiots, they don't get called up for anything over a C grade.

Yes, I'm a "B" student.

As he and Marcelle continued to argue with each other, Martos appeared from the shadows.

'Master, you have to go quickly or it will be over.

Okay, I'm coming.

'Wow, Kent, what's that... it's talking... it's talking...'

Yes, he's my family. I'm sure he'll be fine. Now, if you'll excuse me.

Oh, hey....yeah....

Since it looked like we didn't have much time, I moved into the shadows in front of Marcel-san.

I moved into the shadow of the castle walls and looked out, but it looks like a one-sided slaughter already.

Artoo and his men surrounded a group of orcs and drove them toward the center, where Zae and his men wielded their kukri knives and cut off the heads of the orcs from one side to the other.

As the number of Orcs dwindled as we watched, and the circle surrounding the herd shrank, Reinhardt gave the order, and now Artoo and the others began to wield their swords as well.

''Ahhh........Orcs aren't much of a match for us at all.''

''Buhaha, who is the person who strengthened it to this point?

'Yeah, it's me, but it's awesome I'm stunned.'

The adventurers stationed on top of the ramparts seemed to be dumbfounded as well.

''What's with that Kobold, it's too fast and too strong.''

"Wow.....wow, that lizardman, I can't see the weapon...

He's on our side, isn't he? You're not going to come at me, are you?

Don't give me that shit, you know. There's no way you can beat that thing.

Yeah I kind of felt sorry for the orcs.

Even as they listened to the reaction of the city walls, the orcs became fewer and fewer in number and were annihilated as they were polished off.

''Reinhardt, let me recover every last magic stone.''

Yes, sir. Now you can pay for the construction of the shoe store on your own account.

'Yeah, it looks like the orcs brought the money. Tell everyone to wash the return blood clean.''

"I understand, Master Kent?

'Yeah, I'm going to go report to Mr. Donovan just in case.

There was no sign of Donovan-san on the castle wall.

I looked into the guild to see Donovan-san sitting at his own desk, leisurely drinking tea, wondering if........

''It's kind of generous........''

Oh, there you go. Well, sit down there.

Mr. Donovan jawed at the chair he had prepared in front of his desk and began to pour tea into the cup he had also prepared.

'Are the orcs taken care of?'

Yes, I've already started to collect the magic stone.

Looks like they're even demolishing the building. Well, drink up...

I'll take it........oh, it's so good.......

Hmm, I guess...

The tea brewed by Mr. Donovan had a very nice aroma, with little astringency and a hint of sweetness in my mouth.

It tasted unlike anything brewed by Mr. Donovan, who could almost twist the oak to death with his bare hands.

'Kent, you're being rude, aren't you?'

Yeah, and no way...

Hmm, well, I'm sorry I told you to stay in bed yesterday, but I'm sorry.

No, I'm afraid I'm going to have to spend a lot of money too, so it was just as well.

Hmmm, well, it sounds like a good paying job to you, doesn't it?

But the orcs are still out there.

Hmm, how many were there?

Uh... how long?

I couldn't figure it out at a glance, so I asked Reinhardt, who was lurking in the shadows.

'Roughly between three and four hundred.

Between three and four hundred.

Well....

Mr. Donovan crossed his arms and pondered for a while.

'Kent, when is the rescue mission scheduled to take place?'

'Yes, we're looking at about a week or so, what is it?'

''Hmm, this time the activation of the Demon Forest seems to be on a rather large scale.

Is that so?

'Hmm, a rock ogre and an orc, both packs of over two hundred, plus a lizardman and a giga wolf... I think there's more to come, watch out.

What do you mean, in the thousands or tens of thousands?

I hate to think about it, but if we don't prepare for it, we'll be wiped out in case of an emergency.

Mr. Donovan broke off and brought the cup to his mouth, as if enjoying the scent.

'But how does a demon occur in the tens of thousands?

You know, I don't know everything about demons, and it's fair to say that I'm mostly guessing at what they'll be like.

If you think back to my time in Japan, it's not unusual for a baseball or soccer game to draw tens of thousands of spectators, or a concert or something like that, and sometimes even more than that for a big event.

When you think about it, it's probably not surprising that thousands or even tens of thousands of demons can gather.

''I've heard that the only ones that occur in the tens of thousands are Kobolds and Goblins...''

That guy has been around in the past too, but that doesn't mean he's never been there.

Could it be an orc or an ogre or a giga-wolf?

I don't like to think about it, but if we're going to have a bunch of giga-wolves in our midst, I don't think we're going to make it.

Despite saying that, Donovan-san doesn't even try to break his scowl, so I guess he's going to scramble to the end of the line in such a situation.

''Kent........''

Yes, what is it?

I need you to stay in Volzard.

The words that were casually thrown at me were predictable, but I couldn't respond immediately.

'I know you have your own set of circumstances, and I can't even prepare something to keep you around. Still, please, please, stay in Volzard.

I'll have to think about it.

'Well, I guess I won't have a quick answer...'

Before I know it, the bells have stopped ringing, the holiday guild is quiet, and I can hear the slightest murmur of the city in the distance.

I shouldn't have to think about where I belong, the Riesenburg that abandoned me, the Volzard that accepted me, the Japan that only treated me like a clunker, but I couldn't say the one word that remained.

"Those idiots you brought with you, they're going to be forced to work.

When you say forced labor, are you talking about ... the city walls?

Yeah, I'll give you different days depending on the charge, but I'll knock it into your head what it's like to work.

Excuse me, nice to meet you.

"Take your drink, go home and get some rest. You're working too hard.

Yes thank you for the meal.

It was the least convincing person's words, but I decided to follow them honestly.

I drank my slightly cooled tea and went straight back to my room at the boarding house, hiding in the shadows.

Let's enjoy our mooch time until dinner.
