Chapter 69: Emergency

As dusk approached Volzard, there were hardly any goblins to be seen outside the forest.

At one point, the goblins flooded out of the forest, but thanks to the rampage of Reinhardt and the others on the walls, Zae and the others in the herd, and Alto and the others on the perimeter of the herd, their numbers had dwindled, and they seemed to have stopped moving due to the availability of food.

According to Fred, who has been scouting the area, countless groups are being formed by several higher species.

If such a group is formed, a territorial battle may occur, but since food is abundant, the battle between the groups may not be happening.

The adventurers, who were relieved to have survived the first stage of the extreme outbreak, are now waiting for the second stage of the attack.

Even though they were waiting, it was up to the goblins to decide when the attack would occur, and when that happened, some of the adventurers began to get impatient.

''Donovan-san, shouldn't we strike out while they are still calm?

If you go out there and you're surrounded by people, you'll get eaten.

'No ... it's not ...'

So how about we just shoot the top species we can see from here?

''The one who eats a fallen higher species' magic stone will only become the next higher species...''

Yeah, that's right...

If you're an adventurer, you want to take credit and make a name for yourself, and you want to earn more money than others, but in a situation like a siege battle, it seems difficult to fulfill your wishes.

Even so, it's impatient to wait for the situation to move in silence, and considering the people of the city, it's better to get the situation under control as soon as possible.

They don't know exactly what role the demon stone plays in the demon's body.

However, it is thought to be involved in the circulation of mana within the body, just like the heart does in the circulation of blood, and if the demon stone is actually crushed or gutted, the demon will die out.

If my subordinate pulls out the magic stone from the body of a higher-ranked species, I can defeat that higher-ranked species and prevent another goblin from becoming a higher-ranked species.

''You can do that?''

''Yes, our family members can move freely in the shadow world, so we can choose a higher-ranking species to come and extract the magic stone.

Well, as long as we collect the magical rocks, we should be able to avoid the next higher-ranked species... Okay, go for it.

With Donovan's permission, I was about to send Marto to send a message, but an adventurer asked me to wait.

He said, "Wait a minute Mr. Donovan, doesn't the fact that his family is going to collect the magic stones of a higher level species mean that he is going to have the magic stones all to himself? That would be unfair at any price.

The person who complained was Pedel, who got involved in the guild on the day I asked him to buy the salamander.

In general, that guy just earned a lot of money by having the Military defeat the Salamander. You're not going to be satisfied with this and you're going to keep all the magic stones to yourself?

You talk as if you are the representative of the adventurers, but the adventurers around you don't look good when they hear that I'm the only one who has the magic stone all to myself, do they?

''Um........they said that the magic stones recovered by my family members will be shared among them.......''

No. Where do we need to split the money?

I tried to read the moment and offer a split, but Mr. Donovan dismissed it.

'I can understand why you guys envy Kent,' he said. It's easy to see how such an unreliable-looking boy could easily get the kind of money you'd take years to make.

Then we could split it up and...

No. Adventurers are in the business of making money based on your talent, effort and ability. Don't rely on others! Split? Did you do anything to help the men in front of you get their cut?

If Mr. Donovan gives me a guileless glare, no one can argue with me to my face.

'Look under the city walls. Who cleared away the pile of dead goblins? Who's to blame for the pressure on them? Don't let the facts distract you from the fact that this guy is already working so hard that it's not enough to keep the magic stone to himself.

But it was his family that did it.

So what? If you've got a problem with that, you should try working your household too. You don't have to bother telling me who those skeletons and lizardmen are working for. Then don't tell me you don't know who should get paid.

Pedel made a pained expression, but he couldn't utter a counter argument.

The first thing that comes to mind is the fact that this Kent will easily overtake you.........................or maybe already has. This is the kind of irregularity that sometimes shows up in the world.

Donovan-san glanced at me, but it's not a power I wanted to have, either.

I'm sure he's annoyed and envious of me for my steady efforts. But pulling down that guy's leg doesn't make you better than you are now. If you want to go up, use your front foot.

Peddell still had a disgruntled look on his face, but he still nodded and turned on his heel and went back to his post.

'Kent, do it,'

Yes, I understand!

I decided to have Alto and the others do the collection of the magic stones from the higher species.

I asked the twenty-five cows from Artoo to Nolt to retrieve the magic stones, and the five cows from Halt to Holt to monitor the perimeter of the herd.

As soon as the thirty undead kobolds dispersed, a change appeared.

Like a ripple, the goblins' voices began to spread through the forest.

"Geeeeeeee....

Oh, jeez, jeez...

As the goblins began to make a commotion in the Demon Forest with evening darkness approaching, the adventurers and members of the garrison who had been waiting for it all took a stand.

I, who had given orders to Alto and the others, thought that in some cases I would have to give orders to Reinhardt and the others to defend themselves, but the murmur that spread like a ripple on the surface of the water eventually quieted down.

''Master, it's over.''

Thank you....

When I looked into the shadow space as Alto came to inform me, I found a pile of magical stones that seemed to belong to a higher species.

There were probably more than a thousand of them, and I felt lightly dizzy and held my forehead.

''What's the matter, Kent?''

No, there's a mountain of magic stones...

When I whispered my answer, thinking it would be poor form for other adventurers to hear, Donovan grinned at me.

''Hmmm, you have a good working subordinate.

Yes, I'm just grateful and by the way, the goblins seem to have quieted down.

I guess all that fuss was just a bunch of goblins in their crew getting upset because their heads are suddenly dead.

Do you think he'll come after you?

Probably not. They're full now, and if they get a belly full of food...

Are you going to fall asleep?

Maybe....

Just to be sure, I sent Alto and the others to scout out, and they said that the goblins were sleeping in a solid form with a few goblins.

I have no idea about the biology of goblins, but even if they wake up from their slumber, they probably won't feel a sudden sense of hunger, and if they still have the corpses of their friends left, I have a feeling that they won't attack the city.

But still, the mass outbreak that started with the rock ogre led to a mass outbreak of orcs, and now an extreme outbreak of goblins, why do they only come to Volzard?

It wouldn't be surprising if it went to Rustock's side for once.

''That guy is probably because of the wind........''

Wind?

Donovan says that this time of year, there are many days when the monsoon winds blow from the east.

It seems that the smell of the people living in Volzard is flowing on that wind, and the demons are attracted to it.

Indeed, even now, the wind is blowing from the city walls in the direction of the forest.

''Then if the wind direction changes...''

'Yes, near the end of the year there will be more days of westerly winds. When that happens, Rustock will be targeted.

Frankly speaking, I don't care what happens to Camilla and the others after everyone returns to their home world, but if they get attacked and wiped out by the demons before then, they'll be unable to return.

I wonder if Riesenburg is properly preparing for the maximum outbreak.

By the time the noisy goblins had quieted down, the sun had set, and dinner was being served to the adventurers.

It was only thick milk tea and dry bread-like biscuits, but it tasted alright and it filled my stomach well.

I'm not a goblin, but as my belly swelled, I felt a sudden sleepiness come over me.

After lunch, I was still tense as the situation was still imminent, but I couldn't help but relax when the stalemate seemed to continue.

Even though I stood on the castle wall and stared at the forest, my consciousness was fading away and I felt dizzy on my feet.

I've been moving since the morning due to the irregular rescue mission, and I'm probably affected by the exhaustion of being skewered.

Looking at the adventurers around me, they seem to be taking their turn to stand guard.

''Um........Donovan-san, my order of guard is.......''

You'll have to lie down and stay there until I call you.

There was a pile of blankets at the end of which Mr. Donovan indicated with his chin.

'Master Kent, we'll take care of the watch and reconnaissance, so please rest.

"Thank you, please, Reinhardt.

I fell asleep as soon as I leaned against the wall of the castle walls, wrapped in a thick blanket that was nowhere near as soft to the touch, but good enough to keep me warm.

Before I fell asleep, I remembered that I had completely forgotten about arranging accommodations for my rescued classmates and such, but I was no match for the powerful sleeper.

It was like when I first came to Volzard and was training in the Demon Forest in the middle of the night when I was training in the Demon Forest, and it felt like a moment to fall asleep and not even five minutes had passed when I was woken up.

''Master Kent, wake up! There's something wrong with it!'

Everybody wake up! Prepare for battle!

Just after Reinhardt woke me up, I heard Mr. Donovan's sharp voice, and as soon as I woke up, I noticed something strange.

A screaming goblin scream came from the forest, along with an earth shaking.

'They're coming at you, don't let a single one of them into the city!

As if to overwhelm the earth shaking the air, Donovan-san's angry voice reached the ears of the adventurers.

I don't know how much time has passed since I fell asleep, but there is still no sign of dawn, and the lights of the magic tools on the castle walls have not reached the forest.

But in my night-sighted vision, I could see the dust approaching from a distance.

''Master, the goblins are being chased by a big lizard.

Helt, a big lizard...

A flaming bullet went up from the other side of the ground as I questioned Heldt, who had come to report on the reconnaissance.

'd*mn it, it's a salamander!

The goblins, who had slept through the night and thought they wouldn't come flooding into the city until after tomorrow, suddenly began to run amok, only to be attacked by the salamanders.

'Helt, how big is the salamander?'

About halfway through the last one.

It seems that the salamander we defeated last time was a particularly large one, so I guess we should consider this one to be a normal size.

Donovan-san looked upset for a moment when the salamanders attacked, but when he heard that they were normal size, he began to plan a response.

'Master, it's half the size, but there are four of them.

What, you think...?

After that Donovan-san widened his eyes and exclaimed, he hurriedly turned his gaze in the direction of the forest.

If you ask me, flaming bullets are indeed coming up from multiple places.

''Reinhardt, command everyone and protect the city!

Yes, sir!

Mr. Donovan, I'm going to go take down Salamander!

Hey, hey, Kent...

Without hearing Donovan-san's reply, I dove into the shadows at once and aimed at the place where the salamander was.

Peeking out from the shadows, the goblins seemed to be in a complete panic.

They've lost the unifying factor of a superior species, and since there's no one to lead the pack or group, they're fleeing in disarray.

The place where the salamanders are located is like a special effects movie where flames are raging, and even if they showed their faces for a moment, they were almost burned by the heat.

The four salamanders seem to be working in tandem, spitting flaming bullets and driving the goblins into a corner.

Fearing the flames, the salamanders attacked the fleeing goblins without mercy, eating two or three of them together.

''Gwahhhh!''

The four salamanders were less than half the size of the last one they defeated, but unlike the last one that was nonchalantly searching for food, the way it spat out flaming bullets and repeatedly roared in its belly made one cower in fear.

On top of that, the way it caught the goblins with an agility that didn't match its huge body and chewed them with a crunching motion was filled with the style of a champion of the ecosystem.

Just like last time, I attempted to defeat it by slicing through the medulla oblongata, but I couldn't place the dark shield where I aimed it because it was moving around.

In the meantime, the salamanders continue to advance in the direction of Volzard.

As the salamanders advance, the chased goblins will also flee in the direction of Volzard.

If you don't stop the salamander, the goblins won't stop, and on the other hand, if you stop the salamander, the goblins might stop too.

This time, I decided to defeat them with light attribute attack magic.

While moving through the shadows, I looked for a place where I could aim at the salamander's head, and when I saw a chance, I immediately shot a magic spell.

It should have hit the target, but the salamander seems to be too large compared to the effective range of the attacking magic method, and it cannot be killed with a single shot.

In the end, after firing nearly ten shots of attack magic, one of the salamanders finally stopped moving.

As one of his companions suddenly collapsed, the other three stopped and came back to check on him.

''Gurrrrr........''

With a heavy rumbling in his throat, one of the cows pokes his stuck companion with the tip of his nose, trying to wake him up.

The other two cows are watching the situation with a suspicious look on their faces, but it helps that they've stopped moving.

I connect the shadow space to the salamander's head, which has stopped moving, and cut through the medulla oblongata.

Immediately two of them collapsed, and the remaining one was also surprised and aimed at the spot where it stopped moving, and finished it off.

It's good that I was able to kill them safely, but I had trouble dealing with the salamanders that I had defeated.

If I leave it as it is, it will become food for the goblins if I'm not good at it.

However, in order to put them away in the shadow space, we need the help of our soldiers, but everyone is in the middle of a battle.

I decided to try something that came to me in a flash.

If I put the shield of darkness out under the dirt where the salamander lay and connected it to the shadow space, well, what a surprise.

Like falling into a pit, the salamander was stowed into the shadow space, wasn't it?

Yeah, can I join the ranks of the master?

Now that the threat from our side is gone, the pressure on Volzard should be lowered.

When I hurriedly returned to Volzade, I saw a scene unfold that made me wonder if there were salamanders on the city walls.

Flaming bullets rained down from the center of the city walls and collectively blew away the goblins that rushed at us.

The goblins rushed forward and blasted away. Taaah!

Whereas the magic of the hawk mountain was the size of a basketball, its fireball was larger than an adult could spread his arms out.

At the point of impact, more than a dozen goblins were blown away, creating a crater on the ground.

''Concentrate your aim near the center of the herd, so that the goblins can avoid the Volzard as they pass!

The user of the flaming bullets pinned his red-haired bunny ears up and sent instructions flying to the garrison's surgeons.

As expected of the general commander of the garrison, I had heard that Marianne-san was a fire-attribute surgeon, but I hadn't expected her to be as skilled as this.

The attack of the garrison led by Marianne-san caused the goblin horde to move to the left and right, but even so, the pressure from behind was so strong that some of them were forced to come to the city walls.

Reinhardt and Basten are cleaving the herd under the ramparts, but they seem to be being pushed in by sheer force of numbers.

Also, it seems that slowly, the carcasses are beginning to accumulate under the walls, and even though the garrison and adventurers are struggling, the goblins are still coming up to the top.

'Mr. Donovan, the salamanders have been taken care of,'

Kent, it's true!

'Yes, we're going to break down the carcasses under the ramparts now. Mart, go tell Reinhardt and the others to get away from under the ramparts for once!

Wafu, of course, my master.

I also duck into the shadows and move to where I can see what's going on under the castle walls.

I use the same method for cleaning up the corpses as I did earlier with the salamander.

I can't enter the shadow space, but I can enter the dead ones.

If you put out a shield of darkness under the ground under the castle wall and connect it to the shadow space, the corpse tumbled into the shadow space with the entire ground that couldn't bear the weight.

It was impossible to clear the entire perimeter of the city walls at once, but after clearing the order from the place where many corpses were piled up and imminent, the goblins began to choose to evade and flee when they saw the city walls regaining height.

Perhaps because the pressure of the salamanders is gone, the movement of the goblins has gradually slowed down, and by the time the sun rises, there are no more goblins approaching the walls.

I came out of the shadow world and called out to Mr. Donovan, who was breathing a sigh of relief.

'I see you've managed it,'

Oh, Kent, where did you put the corpse?

''I've temporarily dropped it in the shadow space, and I'll have Reinhardt and the others dump it deep into the forest later.

Well, what happened to the salamander?

'I've killed all four of them, and I've left this one in the shadow space as well, so I'll need to buy it back later.

''Hahaha four salamanders at a time, the guild is about to run out of money.

Donovan-san is smiling, but you can see the tiredness in his expression, as expected.

''Kent, could you ask your subordinate to go and find out what's going on in the forest?

No problem, Alto, I'm going to go check it out.

Wafu, yes, master.

As Alto went out to scout the area, Mr. Donovan put his arms on the breast wall and looked out into the forest.

'We've had a couple of guys climb up to the top of the ramparts and have had some minor injuries, but I haven't heard any reports of them dying or getting into the city.

You were able to protect him.

It's not quite over yet, but you're still over the hump, Kent, and it's thanks to you that you're here.

'I don't need to thank you, Volzard is an important city to me, and it's only right to protect it.

'Well yes I do...'

Mr. Donovan's reluctant laugh seemed to be filled with love for the city of Volzard.

'Master, the goblins seem to be scattered all over the place, not like they're coming towards us.

Okay, Reinhardt, can I have a word with you?

"Yes, Master Kent.

Reinhardt immediately appeared when I called out to him.

''I want you to go and dump the carcasses of the goblins that you dropped in the shadow space, after removing the magic stones, and then disperse them deep in the forest.

"Well, you're building a feeding ground for goblins deep in the forest.

Even without telling everyone, Reinhardt took my intentions into account and acted quickly.

Once the feeding grounds are established deep in the forest, there will be no reason for the goblins to come to Volzard.

''Donovan-san, all we need to do is clear out the city's surroundings.......''

Hmph, if you want to do my job that badly, I can always give up my desk and chair.

'And, sir, it's outrageous, thank you very much, I'll have to decline!

'Huh-ha-ha, you go back to your lodge and sleep, we and the garrison will take care of the rest.

Okay.... oh, Mr. Donovan, where's the first aid station?

What, you got an injury... or can you fix it yourself?

A classmate of mine who can use healing magic that we rescued has volunteered to join us...

Oh, yeah. There's a first aid station set up by the cafeteria.

All right, I'll see how it goes and then I'll go back to the lodge.

As we walked towards the aid station, a bell rang out, Khan, Khan, announcing the lifting of the alarm.

I felt a little proud to think that I could help Volzard safely greet the new morning.

Please report us if you find any errors so we can fix it asap!
