The voice was cold and ethereal and had no clear source. It wasn’t the typical sharp-sounding voice of a eunuch you’d hear on a TV drama passing along imperial orders.

Of course, the heavenly palace was a little different from the mortal world. The pavilions, towers, and temples were on a different level, not to mention other trivial details.

Zong Yan stood in the center of the Great Immortal Dais, unapproachable and serene, with an incomparably cold expression on his face. He seemed suffused with a brilliant divine light, and no one dared to meet his eyes.

The chill of the Nine Heavens Black Iron formed tongues of mist that curled around the hem of his crane cloak, seeming to obscure his form behind a hazy layer of ground glass. It was an eerie sight that struck the hearts of those who saw him.

Besides, this god was truly famous.

Many of the gods and goddesses on the surrounding clouds were sighing to themselves.

When the heavenly palace was founded, the first cohort of immortals who came into existence became the ministers of the Emperor of Heaven, who was known as the Great Unity, the God of the Eastern Sky. These gods included the King of Clouds, the God of the Xiang, the Lord of the East, and the Greater Master of Fate.

The Great Unity, the Emperor of the East, had a deep friendship with the immortals who built the heavenly palace of the Jiu Ge with him. Therefore, after the palace was established, these immortals were granted positions as supreme gods who commanded the laws of heaven and earth.

The Lord of the East was the Sun God, while the Greater Master of Fate controlled the cycle of reincarnation. The King of Clouds resided beyond the clouds of the heavens, and the God of the Xiang represented water.

After the thrones of the superior gods of the Jiu Ge were established, few of the gods who came later enjoyed such high privileges.

For many years, regardless of any internal conflicts among them, the superior gods were cordial to each other, at least on the surface. Besides, each of these gods lived deep in seclusion. In recent years, lesser gods and immortals occupied the world stage. They rarely crossed paths with the mighty ones who preceded them.

So when the heavenly palace announced the punishment of Yun Zhong Jun, everyone was stunned.

Yun Zhong Jun’s character was aloof, but he was no stranger to any of the immortals who’d survived from ancient times.

The clouds he wielded were deadly, and he dwelled in the Palace of Longevity beyond the Ninth Heaven, shining with the light of the sun and the moon. In elder days he was a mighty force in battle, slaying all enemies, and even overshadowed the elegant Lord of the East.

Lesser deities had little opportunity to encounter such a great being. Today, seeing him on the Great Immortal Dais, they couldn’t help but feel the force of his aura, majestic and indifferent.

Of course, everyone in the crowd had the same question—

What exactly had this immortal monarch done to be punished by His Majesty the Emperor of the East?

This was no ordinary chastisement. Usually the gods turned a blind eye to each other’s deeds. This time, not only was the eye not blind, the emperor had actually invoked the Great Immortal Dais. It was obvious he had no intention of being lenient.

The newly-issued decree had now spread throughout the world, and the punishment wasn’t light.

This wasn’t like being told to face the wall and think about your actions. It was being relegated to the mortal world, deprived of all divine power, becoming a mortal ah!

The immortals drew a sharp breath of fear. Whispers flew as everyone traded gossip with their divine senses.

In the face of all this, Zong Yan remained motionless.

Based on what he’d observed so far, it seemed that he’d entered the body of Yun Zhong Jun. The situation was the same as with the Sun God. He’d directly entered the body of another person, instead of being granted a new identity.

Zong Yan’s mind was turning fast. He’d already been the Sun God, and now he was the King of Clouds. Could it be that after taking up the authority of the Dreamlands, he needed to cycle through every daily disposable persona card he owned?

As he thought about this, he remembered the Azathoth persona card that was waiting for him like a time bomb, and hesitated.

If this journey was going to end by returning to the Lord of the Universe…

Zong Yan put these thoughts aside. It wasn’t the right time.

After all, he still had to clean up a big dirt pile for Yun Zhong Jun.

Zong Yan didn’t know exactly what was going on right now, but the condemnation decree had already echoed throughout heaven and earth. How could he just stand here and wait for death?!

As he was considering, the key on his chest suddenly flashed with a familiar burning heat.

A second later, the voice that came from the sky issued a follow-up.

“His Majesty has decreed the sentence will be carried out immediately.”

At almost the same moment, the air on this side of the Great Immortal Dais became murky.

A ripple of light overlaid by a vast golden aura flew from the topmost point of the towering heavenly palace. Only those who were closest could see the golden seal inside and the indistinct characters written on it.

“It’s the Heavenly Emperor’s seal!” the surrounding immortals exclaimed one by one.

The seal darted through the sky and landed on the Great Immortal Dais in front of Zong Yan.

The ancient, obscure characters written in gold fluttered through the air one after the other, bathing the platform in a brilliant glow.

The golden sigils flew towards the four iron beasts guarding the corners of the Great Immortal Dais and pierced their motionless bodies. In an instant, these ferocious beasts seemed to come to life. Their eyes, cast in black iron, blazed with a fierce light. The beasts roared at the sky in unison.

“That’s it, it’s over. There’s no room to maneuver at all this time.”

“There’s no mistake. That’s the seal of the Emperor of Heaven.” Another immortal looked at the divine light and felt a vague burning pain in his eyes. He hastily squashed any thought of doing something and turned his gaze away. “His Majesty the Emperor of the East actually issued the heavenly seal. Clearly the Great Immortal Dais wasn’t just a formality. He’s really going to activate the four ancient beasts!”

This kind of battle hadn’t been seen since the days when the heavenly palace was first established, back when they’d executed their villainous enemies. How could such a fate befall a god?

Besides, hadn’t the relationship between his Majesty the Eastern Emperor and the King of Clouds always been quite good? What exactly did the latter do to make His Majesty take such a drastic step? Was it possible that Yun Zhong Jun, under some delusion, tried to seize power and usurp the throne?

After considering all possibilities, there was just one thought left in their minds—sadly, today Yun Zhong Jun faced certain doom.

The Heavenly Emperor’s seal had been issued, and no god could use their power on the Great Immortal Dais. Not even the copper muscles and iron bones of an immortal could resist what was to come. His suffering was now inevitable.

Some of the immortals who could see what was about to happen began to shake their heads. “This God of Clouds, I don’t know what crime he committed to make His Majesty so cruel.”

He’d been sentenced to the mortal world, yet His Majesty still activated the four ferocious beasts. Clearly, he wanted Yun Zhong Jun to die in agony.

The immortals averted their eyes.

Meanwhile, the god on the Great Immortal Dais was standing still, with neither joy nor sorrow in his eyes, and not a strand of his hair was touched by wind. In the face of impending, inescapable doom, he was as indifferent as ever.

“Alas, the immortal lord is too proud.” They all sighed.

Yun Zhong Jun was, after all, a god, and there were so many other immortals watching. If he softened his stance at all, if he properly conceded and pleaded with the Emperor of Heaven as he stood there on the Great Immortal Dais, he might avoid the pain of having his flesh torn and blood spilled. He might even reduce the severity of his punishment.

Many of them noted the escape clause in the decree that had just been issued. It stated he “had not shown the slightest remorse”, but hadn’t said exactly what the crime was. This seemed to imply His Majesty was especially concerned about Yun Zhong Jun’s attitude.

As for all that, Zong Yan didn’t have the slightest clue. Of course, even if he did, he wouldn’t beg for mercy from someone he didn’t know at all.

Yun Zhong Jun stood on the Great Immortal Dais while the four savage beasts in each direction activated one by one. Their eyes glowed with a fierce light. They opened their mouths, revealing rows of fangs eager to tear him apart.

It was at this point that Zong Yan stopped hiding.

The broad sleeves of Yun Zhong Jun’s robe were flung back, and his slender, icy fingers gripped the Silver Key on his chest.

In an instant, all the prohibitions on the Great Immortal Dais were rendered powerless. Incredible divine power flowed out from Yun Zhong Jun. In just a moment, a wall of force smashed into the black iron beasts and shredded them.

How tremendous, how terrible was the divine power of Yun Zhong Jun, one of the five supreme gods of ancient times?

Not to mention that Zong Yan didn’t hold anything back with his attack. All the clouds and mist in heaven and earth were swept up en masse and, together with his dark blue divine power, turned into a deadly scourge that ripped the beasts into millions of splinters.

All this happened like a flash of lightning. Before the surrounding immortals knew what was happening, Yun Zhong Jun had already made his move. A massive cyclone formed in the sky above the heavenly palace, becoming the silent executioner of countless immortals and destroying the Great Immortal Dais in an instant.

While the onlookers were stunned, a series of strange movements occurred within the heavenly palace.

First was the searing golden light of the Heavenly Emperor’s seal, working desperately to suppress all this.

The dark blue mist didn’t even try to dodge, but collided directly with the heavenly seal.

The voice that had previously issued the decree came from far away in the heavenly palace. The voice now seemed to be in terror of this unparalleled power, stammering as it said, “How dare you, Yun Zhong Jun, how dare you resist the decree! I’m going to tell His Majesty to bring you to justice!”

Yun Zhong Jun, who stood at the center of the storm, turned a deaf ear.

Zong Yan looked away in time to see his own reflection in the shimmering clouds.

Yun Zhong Jun’s appearance was inherently luminous and beautiful. The deity’s every move was noble and cold, as lofty as his name, an icy, solitary cloud, unbound and unrestricted by any other force.

For some reason, Zong Yan suddenly thought there was a slight resemblance between Apollo’s face, this face, and his own human face. The similarity wasn’t just a matter of outward appearance, it was more like a similarity of soul.

He looked at the unfamiliar face in the reflection and felt the warmth of the Silver Key in his hand spreading all the way to his heart.

Zong Yan knew the key was guiding him away from this strange world.

Right now they were far, far apart. Perhaps the god wouldn’t recognize Zong Yan’s appearance right now, but the Lord of Time and Space would surely, always be watching him, no matter where he was.

Yun Zhong Jun suddenly took a step forward, and the voice in the sky sharpened with fear.

The King of Clouds had already shown he was powerful enough to break the shackles of the Great Immortal Dais and fight the Heavenly Emperor’s seal without the slightest hint of falling back. One after another the surrounding immortals retreated with frightened eyes.

However, Yun Zhong Jun didn’t immediately attack the heavenly palace and seize the throne.

Instead he leaped straight down into the clouds.

The ever-present wind and mist caught his body, guiding this lonely, arrogant god towards the ground.

With the key in his hand, in mid-air, Zong Yan passed through the familiar membrane once again, traversing space and time.

In an instant, never-ending day became deep, fathomless night.

The sweeping blue and gold crane cloak slowly faded and shrank, eventually becoming a slim-fitting dark gray trench coat. The thin gold chain of a pocket watch fluttered through the air.

In a dark vest and a trench coat, holding a black umbrella, the Night Watchman leaped across the shadows of the night and descended from the sky.

A strong wind lifted his long, gray hair, revealing his unsettling scarlet eyes. A black harbinger bird opened its wings and settled on his shoulder.

The Night Watchman landed lightly on the spire of a grim tower and gazed down at the dark and sinful streets of the city below his feet.

In the distance, the smoke from countless enormous steam engines announced their presence under the night sky.

This was London in the 19th century, London in the age of steam.

The author has something to say:

The Night Watchman is online!!!!!
