Chapter 36 – Entering the City

The region of Jiangnan had many interconnected rivers and streams, so the people there travelled mostly by boats.

There were several different docks and piers of varying sizes in Hangzhou City, of which the three largest piers were located near Wulin Gate, Yongjin Gate and Qiantang Gate.

Wulin Gate Pier was in the northwest of the city. It connects to Jiangnan Grand Canal Crossing, which was an important waterway linking the south to the north of the city. As the century-old Xiangji Temple was located not too far from there, so the pier was also known as Xiangji Temple Pier.

Yongjin Gate Pier was in the west of the city. Travelling west of the lake will lead you to Taihu Lake, Lin’an and other places.

Qiantang Gate Pier was located between Xiangji Temple Pier and YongJin Gate Pier. As there were many temples and monasteries nearby, all year round there would be incense smoke that filled the air along with swathing crowds of temple visitors. It was thus known as “Qiantang Gate with the incense baskets”.

Yutang’s passenger boat arrived at Yongjin Gate Pier.

After disembarking, they would then have to switch to traveling by means of a smaller black awning-boat, or hire a carriage to enter into the heart of the city.

The boat ride was much cheaper and more comfortable than the carriage ride, and you could also admire the scenery along the way. The only drawback was that the journey took longer than the carriage ride. However, since the three of them had already intended to stay in Hangzhou city for a few days at leisure, so Yuwen decided early on that they would take the black awning-boat into the city.

Perhaps because they were on the boat for quite a while, so when they disembarked, Yu Tang’s legs were weak and she felt her whole body swaying involuntarily.

As Yu Yuan supported her, he pointed to a tea seller under a large acacia tree in front of him and asked concernedly, “Do you want to have a cup of tea and rest for a little while?”

The bustling pier was filled with people as they jostled around shoulder to shoulder, shouting and yelling. It was a cacophony of sounds, each one louder than the next; truly headache-inducing.

“That’s not necessary.” Yu Tang said somewhat wearily, “Let’s quickly head to our inn.”

Once she reached the inn, she could have a proper rest.

Yu Yuan nodded his head.

Yu Tang took this opportunity to take a few glances at the pier.

The green stone-paved steps were solid and sturdy, the non-porous arch bridge was beautiful and picturesque, and the river was filled with many different kinds of boats.

However, she did not see the Pei family’s boat.

Yu Wen had already gone off to secure their passage on a black awning-boat. It was five coins per person, for travel to Ruyi Inn on Little River Imperial Street.

Yu Wen said reassuringly, “Whenever I travelled to Hangzhou city, I would stay there most of the time. It’s cheap and clean, the innkeeper is nice, and the food is good.”

Yu Tang and Yu Yuan nodded and followed Yu Wen onto the black awning-boat.

The boat lady served them some tea and light refreshments.

Yu Tang couldn’t hold herself back from asking Yu Yuan quietly, “The Pei family’s boat should have arrived before us, right? But I didn’t see it.”

Yu Yuan laughed and teased her, “Didn’t you say that even if you looked at it several times, it’s still someone else’s boat? Why are you so concerned about another family’s boat now?”

Annoyed, Yu Tang replied testily, “Forget it.”

Yu Yuan chuckled softly a few more times before replying her, “They probably entered the city from Wulin Gate instead.”

Yu Tang was a little confused.

Yu Yuan explained, “From Xiangji Temple Pier, they can travel into the heart of the city via Peach Blossom River. Their boat is a two-mast sail boat, therefore they should be able to enter the city directly.”

Owning a boat that belongs to your family is really comfortable.

Yu Tang bit her lip.

Yu Yuan then pointed out the river houses and weeping willows on both sides of the river bank for her to see: “Beautiful, isn’t it?”

The fine foliage of the willow trees hung like green silk along the river, creeping vines climbed up along the river houses, amongst the stone tables and bamboo chairs were beautiful flowers blooming, and the roof terraces were full of sun-dried vegetables and bamboo shoots. There were little girls dressed in flowery dresses, young boys kicking shuttlecocks and playing jumping robe at the doorsteps, and shopkeepers who were selling “peanut brittle” and “embroidery thread and scissors” and various goods.

“It’s very beautiful!” As Yu Tang looked on, she was filled with fascination.

Yu Yuan said enviously, “If only we could move here, our business will definitely be booming.”

Isn’t that the opposite of the saying “people suffer losses when they leave their hometown”?

In her two lives, Yu Tang never knew that Yu Yuan harbored such ambition.

Was it because in her previous life, their difficult situation made it seem like wistful thinking? Or was it because she didn’t have the opportunity to find out as she couldn’t even take care of herself?

Yu Tong’s smile gradually faded.

Yu Yuan was still gazing at the scenery on both sides of the river and excitedly spoke, “The first time I came to Hangzhou City with my father, I felt that this place was really wonderful. Even just a little dried fish seller has more customers than what we have in Lin’an. Our place is still too isolated, those people that come and go are the usual lot, and they speak about the same things ……”

Yu Tang listened quietly as she slowly sipped her tea.

The black awning boat finally docked. Both sides of the riverbank were lined with three to five storefront-wide stores, the store flag signages were all either embroidered with gold silk threads or edged with silver, the people on the streets were also dressed in fine clothes with accompanying servants and the whole street looked bright and captivating.

But where was Ruyi Inn?

While Yu Wen paid the boat fees, Yu Tang was holding her cloth bag and looking around.

A store front signage with the word “Pawn” written on one side and “Pei’s” embroidered on the bottom with golden silk thread caught her eye.

Yu Tang was dumbfounded.

The Pei family’s pawnshop?

Didn’t they say it was located on what Fangrenli place near Shiyao river?

Aren’t they supposed to be heading to Little River Imperial Street?

Then where was she now?

Yu Tang quickly pulled on Yu Wen’s sleeve and pointed to the Pei family’s pawnshop and said, “Father, look!”

Yu Wen didn’t look surprised and said to her, smiling, “Your eyes are quite sharp. That indeed is the Pei family’s pawnshop. It’s a pity that Supervisor Tong is not here, otherwise I would have taken you to their place later.”

Then why did they come here for?

Yu Tang’s eyes widened in confusion.

Only then did Yu Wen notice her perplexed look.

He laughed loudly and explained, “Silly girl, this river in front of us is called Shiyao River, and this street we are currently standing on is called Little River Imperial Street. The area that the Pei family’s pawnshop is located on is called Fangren Li. See that alley next to the pawnshop? That’s Jisan Li. Ruyi Inn is located further down that alley.”

In other words, they would be staying in the back alley of the Pei family’s pawnshop.

Yu Tang was infuriated.

Although she had arrived in Hangzhou City, she was still encountering people surnamed Pei everywhere!

Yu Wen found his daughter’s expression to be amusing, so he pointed to a bookstore next to the Pei family’s pawnshop and said, “See? That is also the Pei family’s. The nearby shops that sell antiques, rouge and powder, fake hair buns and flower headpieces, all of them are their stores – FangRen Li, Jisan Li, and the neighboring areas Ziwa Fang, Dingmin Residence – all owned by them.”

Which piece of land wasn’t theirs then?

Yu Tang asked, “Does the third master of the Pei family also live here?”

“How is that possible?” Yu Wen chuckled, “Their family has a separate estate on Phoenix Mountain, and they have other residences as well over at Qingbo Gate, Meijia Bridge, and Mingqing Temple. However, since they entered the city by the Xiangji Temple pier, so they would either be staying in the estate near Phoenix Mountain or in the estate near Meijia Bridge.”

Yu Yuan asked curiously, “How does uncle know this? It is the first time I’m hearing about this.”

Yu Wen said proudly, “It was Supervisor Tong who told me this. Listening to supervisor Tong’s words, the estates over at Meijia Bridge and Qingbo Gate were Third Master Pei’s personal properties, which were left to him by the maternal side of his family, and as such is not part of the Pei family’s inheritance.”

Yu Yuan was intrigued by this and asked, “Which family did the Pei family’s grand madam come from?”

“She was from Qian Tang, the Qian family.” Yu Wen replied, “It is the same Qian family of Wu Yue(Tributary State).”

The four prominent families in Jiangnan, the Qian family stood at the top.

Yu Yuan said, “Didn’t the relatives of Third Master Pei also have sons?”

“I heard that there was a son, but he passed away of illness even before reaching maturity.” Yu Wen continued, “Later, half of the family’s estate was given to Grand Madam Pei as dowry, and half was given to the grandchildren and nephews to share. When Grand Elder Qian passed away, the Pei family’s eldest and second eldest master were already married, and only the Pei family’s third master was left as he was still too young. Grand Elder Qian was afraid that the Pei family’s third master would be at a disadvantage during marriage discussions, so he purposely left a sizable inheritance for him.”

“Wow!” Yu Yuan’s eyes were turned starry, as he exclaimed , “This really befits the saying ‘the emperor favors the eldest, but the common people love the youngest.’ Third Master Pei’s luck is really good!”

“Who says it isn’t?” Yu Wen and Yu Yuan continued their idle talk, “Supervisor Tong also said that the estate on Meijia Bridge has about a hundred servants and the residence on side of the Qingbo Gate is even bigger. Usually no one stays there, but just the upkeep of those estates, the expenses were already pretty significant. And these expenses were personally managed by third master Pei himself. Evidently, Third Master Pei has his own personal assets. But what were they? where? How many? No one knows. Because of this, when the Pei family’s grand elder was still alive, the Pei family’s eldest master always suspected that Grand Elder Pei privately helped third master Pei to buy a few private properties……”

Yu Yuan said: “If it were me, I would be suspicious too. Considering the age of third master Pei ……”

Anyway, the conclusion is that the Pei family is very wealthy!

Yu Tang had already became numb to their words.

She didn’t feel like speaking.

Followed behind her father, after seven or eight turns, they finally reached Ruyi Inn, and Yu Tang didn’t even have the energy to be curious. She followed the inn staff to her room. She didn’t even take a good look around the room before immediately falling onto the bed and was soon sound asleep.

Later, it was Yu Yuan who woke her up. “Uncle said that he wants to take us on a tour of the night market in the city north. Quickly change your clothes. Uncle said that we will leave in a quarter of an hour.”

Yu Tong had never been to a night market in all her life, so she mustered up some energy, and changed into a short jacket, covered her head with a headcloth, and left the house with her father and brother.

It was nearly sunset as they made their way north, but the number of people on the road increased rather than decreased.

Yu Yuan told her, “We’re going to Wulin Gate, and the North Night Market is just outside Wulin Gate.”

They won’t run into Pei Yan, right? Yutang thought.

Yu Tang asked, “Is this the only night market in Hangzhou City?”

“There are several night markets in Hangzhou City, just that the one in thy city North is the most famous.” Yu Yuan chuckled, “Most people who come to Hangzhou City will come here. However, if you have lived in Hangzhou City for a long time, you will be more likely to visit the night market on Little River Imperial Street instead, where the night market is less crowded and things are more expensive. This North night market, most of the the merchants and customers will be those visiting from the north and the south.”

Yu Wen who was walking in front of them heard what Yu Yuan said and added “The main thing is that you haven’t been here, so I wanted you to experience this for yourself. Especially for ladies, after marriage you will not be as free as you are now. So take advantage of this time to travel more and experience as many things as much as possible. Only after having experience can one develop insight and courage. Tomorrow, I’ll take you to the night market on Little River Imperial Street, so that you can see the difference between the two night markets.”

People like Pei Yan, even if it’s just a night market, they should be going to the Little River Imperial Street night market instead, right?

Yu Tang became interested and asked her father with a smile, “What’s good at the North night market?”

Yu Wen chuckled as he replied, “There’s Third Lady Guan’s grilled fish, Old Aunty Wang’s Glutinous Rice Balls with Osmanthus and Sweet Fermented Glutinous Rice, Second Tang Fool’s Flatbread…… there’s plenty of delicious things. Make sure you have some space in your tummy for them.”

Yu Tang said excitedly “Next time, let’s bring Mother along as well!”

Yu Wen laughed as he replied, “When your mother and I first got married, we came here twice. However, as your mother’s body weakened with illness, I didn’t dare to bring her outside the house. I was also afraid that your mother would worry too much over you, so I seldom brought you outside.”

The three of them chatted and joked as they left Wulin gate

Yu Tong did not expect the the night market to be so far from where they stayed, and her legs were already aching from all the walking.

Yu Yuan looked at the crowds of people which didn’t budge an inch, and searched for a long while before finding a restaurant with available seats, and discussed with Yu Wen: “Let’s rest here for a while first?”

Yu Wen said with some hesitation. “Business is flourishing here but yet theirs doesn’t have many people, clearly the food isn’t that good. How about we walk further?”

They can’t just freely sit in someone’s restaurant and not order something, right?

Yu Tang also felt the same way, but as she was just about to speak, she looked up and saw Pei Yan and Zhou ZiJin standing next to a restaurant.
