DPM Chapter 108-Genetic Code
Translated by Snowfall77

Many were happy with the result. A few bitterly hated it.

Liu Meng softly muttered to himself: “Today……is my birthday……”

No one heard his piteous comment, as he privately bemoaned that Wu Xingyun kept celebrating his relationship at the most distressing times.

Leaving midway through the feast, Mozun walked Wu Xingyun to a tree-lined lane.

Heart-shaped leaves rustled in the breeze on either side and at the end of the small street was a modest three-storied house.

A little astonished, Wu Xingyun said: “This is really similar to when we lived on Yuanxing……”

Fixing his eyes on Wu Xingyun, Mozun smiled and suddenly picked Wu Xingyun up in a bridal carry.

“What are you trying to do?” Wu Xingyun frowned. “I can walk by myself.”

Mozun kissed Wu Xingyun, then said in a soft voice: “It’s our wedding anniversary, I’m doing wedding anniversary things. What I didn’t do on our wedding night, I’ll make up for it now.”

Wu Xingyun stole a glance at Mozun and let himself be held.

Almost identical to that first night, Mozun carried Wu Xingyun into the bedroom and placed the soldier on the big bed.

With a portrait of them hanging on the wall, Mozun got on one knee. The two began kissing.

No matter how many times they’d done it before, it was still special, especially on such a night in such a room. Undisturbed, they made love in the warmest way.

A sweet happiness enveloped them both.

Still, when they were later reclining against the headboard catching their breath, Wu Xingyun asked anxiously: “Are you really planning on fighting together with the Federation against the Saer?”

Mozun nodded: “Yes. If we don’t join hands, we’ll all be destroyed.”

“But……don’t you hate the Federation?” Wu Xingyun couldn’t help being unreconciled. Mozun had had some two thousand years to process the Federation’s initial sins, but for Wu Xingyun it’d been less than a year.

Maybe time could heal all wounds. It was just that Wu Xingyun hadn’t had enough of it yet.

Not that he was spending night and day hoping for the Federation’s defeat. He was more preoccupied with the worry of Mozun meeting some unexpected mishap.

Mozun laughed, giving a little shake of his head: “I’d be lying if I said I don’t hate them. You though, don’t worry so much. At this point we need to deal with the Saer first. The Federation situation won’t change. In the future, if……when we win……” Mozun’s lips curved up in a wolfish smile.

At the same time that Mozun and Wu Xingyun were talking, Wen Nuo, who’d come to attend the anniversary celebration, sat in his guest lodging, brow deeply furrowed.

“I don’t want to!” Wen Nuo stated emphatically.

“Not willing to act as Marshal? Why not?!” Several members of the Federation council expressed their confused irritation.

Giving the relatively new council members a glare, Wen Nuo’s heart was hit by a burst of grief.

Standing up, he said: “I attended this show of Mozun’s as you asked. Now please let me go back to my home. I’ve already submitted my discharge papers. That mutant can’t rule over everything.”

Throwing on his hat, Wen Nuo pulled the door open and walked out, leaving the wide-eyed council members behind.

The next day Mozun and Wu Xingyun visited the formerly missing female biologist.

She’d invited them to Luoshi Research headquarters, and taking the latest spaceship, the two men promptly obliged.

In the foyer hung a large portrait of Luo Ying, taken right before she died.

Mozun had never been quite clear on what had happened to Luo Ying. Now the female biologist let Mozun read documentation that Luoshi Research had kept hidden for a very long time, and he finally understood.

She’d spent her last days studying. Not the genetic bomb requested by the Federation, but true genetic modification.

Recombining, rearranging mutant genes, permitting the unique abilities to break through ordinary human limits and be strengthened two or three times over in a short amount of time.

Adding a lock without a password. Even with a mutant’s genes and gender, the Federation still wouldn’t be able to crack the genetic structure.

The cost would be that mutants wouldn’t be able to reproduce. On the other hand, the Federation would be incapable of in-depth research on mutants.

Then in the end, Luo Ying’s hair had turned snowy white and her body shriveled in on itself.

The female biologist pushed her glasses back up her nose: “Personally I was shocked when I first read Director Luo’s records. What she was able to accomplish over two thousands years ago. Unbelievable. And that was why I volunteered for the dowry team. I was hoping to get a closer look at mutants, see if what you just read was really true.”

Mozun didn’t respond. The reasons for Luo Ying’s actions had eluded him for a long time. Finally knowing everything, he was trying to accept the unpleasant truth.

“Then by coincidence we encountered the meteor stream,” the female biologist continued. “Where I discovered a titanium alloy coffin with the Federation logo on it. Right in the heart of Alliance territory no less. I managed to fly it back to Federation territory. Took me forever by the way. Anyways, as soon as I got back, I brought the coffin here, to Luoshi Research. It was quite the surprise when we opened it. We found Director Luo’s corpse, thousands of years old, but undecayed.”

There was still a remaining tinge of excitement in the biologist’s tone.

Wu Xingyun hadn’t seen Luo Ying in person since the day Noah’s Ark had left Earth. Knowing that her body had been recovered, he found himself asking: “Can we see her? I……she used to be our friend.”

The biologist nodded: “Not a problem. This way please.”

Mozun and Wu Xingyun followed the biologist, but were unprepared for what they saw. The body had been dissected, organs sliced for specimens.

“This is her heart,” the biologist pointed, “Its blood vessels were constricted, as was originally recorded. Because time was of the essence for her last research, she’d injected herself with a massive amount of stimulants. It greatly increased her mental acuity, but damaged the brain and heart blood vessels, contributing to her body’s rapid aging.”

“These are her leg muscles. At that time, she was in a hospital ward, but wished to kill herself. Apparently when she got out of bed to find her gun, she must have fallen, because this leg bone was broken.”

“Now this hole in the skull is where the bullet passed through. The positioning of her self-inflicted shot was impeccable. Worthy of a great biologist. Look how cleanly she severed her nervous system. Meaning her death would have been painless.”

“Here’s the bone marrow……Apparently on the Earth’s moon, the gravitational force was low, so we found some osteoporosis …..”

Mozun couldn’t listen anymore. He turned away and tried to constrain the anger in his voice: “How could you do this to her remains?! Is this how you show your respect?”

“It’s what……what she really wanted.” Intimidated by Mozun, the biologist chose her words carefully. “When you work here, it’s considered the highest honor to have your remains be studied by your colleagues. I know……this might seem cruel or ruthless to an ordinary person, but……it’s the honor of Luoshi Research. Please understand that Director Luo intended this……otherwise she would’ve never placed the code to unlocking mutant genetic structure within her own genes.”

Shaking with emotion, Mozun didn’t know what to say. He looked to Wu Xingyun, and Wu Xingyun took Mozun’s hand in his own.

“We were her friends, but I think we never really knew her. Maybe no one did. Not even Ouyang Yi or Dai Rong……”

The biologist moved the two men onto a different laboratory, where once again she couldn’t hide the enthusiasm in her voice as she asked: “If the two of you don’t mind, I want to……extract some genetic material for a reproduction experiment.”

Mozun and Wu Xingyun glanced at each other, both thinking the same thing: “If we want a child who belongs to both of us, can you make that happen?”

“That’s very simple.” The biologist was a little offended by their lack of confidence. “Not a problem. Now, can I collect your genetic samples?”

Ten days later, Wu Xingyun and Mozun saw the embryo in the incubator.

Asexual reproduction technology had come a long way since the Federation had left the earth. Staring at the embryo, the two men tried to fathom that in about ten months their baby would be born.

Would the baby have Mozun’s powers? Would he be a healthy human?

No one knew. They would have to wait ten months, or perhaps ten years, twenty years for the answer.

But the research into restoring the mutants’ ability to reproduce achieved a positive result.

Within Luo Ying’s body had been the code, and using that, Luoshi Research developed a pill.

Take the pill, a mutant could reproduce naturally. They could have children.

The cost was forfeiting their immortality.

No more endless life. They would die. But their children would live to have children of their own, the cycle of nature restored.

Unsure of whether to let every mutant know, Mozun only told a select few. Out of that small group, four mutants wanted the pill.

They wanted a child. And as for their own lives……they lived too long already.

No one expected at the time that about a hundred years later, nearly all mutants would have taken the pill. Though that was a story to be recounted later.

Finished for the moment at Luoshi Research, Mozun moved onto a Federation mechanical laboratory.

There the Federation was actively testing mecha tailor-made for Mozun and other mutants.

The new mechas weren’t like the Federation’s old mecha that had been designed for four or five operators. Those had been expensive wastes of time, ending up in the Night’s Shard hands to be used against the Federation.

However now that they needed to stand together against the Saer, the Federation resumed mecha construction. After measuring Mozun’s physical indicators, the mecha would be able to travel at the speed of light, and expend energy ten times greater than that of a fighter plane.

And not only was the Federation working on mecha for the mutants, they were also upgrading Ghost combat suits, based on Wu Xingyun’s physical capabilities.

Other Ghost soldiers were only ordinary humans, yet after they put the modified Ghost combat suits, it was almost impossible for even Mozun to detect them.

" "

Naturally, that made Mozun highly uneasy. After all, he’d been snuck up on by a Ghost soldier twice before. If not for Wu Xingyun’s ability to spot another Ghost solider up to a thousand kilometers away, Mozun would never have permitted the Federation to proceed with such research and development.

“This is why, in the future, you can’t leave my side……Or else I’ll be assassinated!” Acting a little spoiled, Mozun half-joked to Wu Xingyun.

Wu Xingyun just smiled and nodded: “Alright!”

Due to lack of mechanical pressure on the bone, bone mass is lost at a rate of one and a half percent in just one month in a zero-gravity environment, compared to about three percent a decade in a healthy person in a normal environment. The mass loss mainly affects the lower vertebrae of the spine, the hip joint and the femur. Due to the rapid change in density, bones may become brittle and exhibit symptoms similar to those of osteoporosis.
