Chapter 2-Premarital Training part 1
Translated by Snowfall77

General Hong, hearing Wu Xingyun’s statement, nodded in satisfaction. “As military personnel, it’s our duty to obey orders. That you know this is very good. To help you with adjusting to the situation, you don’t have to train troops anymore. Instead, you’ll be gaining a deeper understanding of the enemy. To ensure your safety, and lay a solid foundation of peace for both sides.”

Wu Xingyun’s conditioned reflexes took over again as he stood at attention: “Yes!”

As he left the conference room, General Hong patted Wu Xingyun’s shoulder helplessly, saying: “You’re a good soldier! I’m sorry about all this…”

Wu Xingyun was at a loss, watching General Hong depart.

The civilian officer went with General Hong, leaving only Wu Xingyun and the Lieutenant Commander in the vast conference room.

The Lieutenant Commander looked to be about twenty-five years old, clean-faced and roughly six feet tall. His gray uniform untainted by even a speck of dust, everything about him excessively orderly.

And he was giving Wu Xingyun a very sad look.

In fact, ever since the major had disembarked the glider, his gaze had stayed glued to Wu Xingyun.

The silence in the room deepened. The black dome above, sprinkled with blue lights twinkling like stars in the sky, seemed an universe until itself. Underneath those artificial stars, melancholy, anger, and reluctance filled the major’s eyes.

Wen Nuo was the Lieutenant Commander’s name, and he was Wu Xingyun’s former Company Commander. Three months ago, Wen Nuo had submitted a military paper that received positive attention from the higher-ups. He’d been promoted to Lieutenant Commander, leaving behind his combat troops. It was his first time returning, after getting bumped up the ranks, and he hadn’t expected that it would for such an distasteful task.

Wu Xingyun smiled at Wen Nuo. “Commander, why are you here?”

Squeezing out a bitter smirk, Wen Nuo replied: “Fool, I’m here to assist you in understanding the state of affairs, regarding the enemy.”

Oblivious to the Lieutenant Commander’s gloominess, Wu Xingyun grinned, showing his pearly teeth. “Really? Great, I’m able to be with Company Commander again! I’ve thought about you ever since you left. I thought I’d never see you again, who knew we’d reunite so soon!”

Inwardly pained, Wen Nuo didn’t return Wu Xingyun’s smile. Instead he scolded: “Don’t call me that again. I’m not your Company Commander anymore.”

Standing straight, Wu Xingyun responded: “Yes!” But a moment later he doubtfully asked: “Then…how should I call you?”

The Lieutenant Commander took out a cigarette, lighting it and taking a drag. He felt a little powerless, and finally said: “Call me by my name.”

Wu Xingyun promptly obeyed the order. “Yes, Wen Nuo!” Then Wu Xingyun thought for a moment and added: “But it’s against the rules. According to regulations, I should address you by rank.”

Lieutenant Commander Wen Nuo’s face reddened in anger. He threw aside his cigarette butt and roared deep from his chest. “Rules? Fuck the rules! You wood for brains, is now the time for you to worry about regulations?! What rule says you send a soldier to the enemy? Where does it say that a soldier’s mission is to be married off like a daughter? The rules, those scoundrels, those who make the rules don’t know what they are. And here you are, being so compliant.”

Wen Nuo’s rare ire surprised Wu Xingyun. He obediently stopped talking, quietly listening to Wen Nuo’s cursing. Eventually Wen Nuo’s voice grew hoarse, his tone more and more dejected.

“The ridiculous thing is, I couldn’t change it, I have to personally give my proudest solider this kind of training. I’m going to have to deliver my most valued soldier to that hellhole. I’m an useless man…” Wen Nuo’s tone gradually sank. He squatted on the ground in pain, a slender hand covering his head, uniform cap thrown aside.

Wu Xingyun, upon seeing this, thought carefully and finally came up with words to comfort his distressed old superior. “Company Commander, rest assured I will learn well these coming days. I will not bring you shame!”

Looking up, Wen Nuo examined the young soldier’s face. A face full of fighting spirit, with transparently clear bright eyes, not an iota of impurity. Capped off with a white-toothed smile, equal measures of foolish and adorable.

However, it was such a soldier, innocent, simple, full of patriotism and trust, that was going to be sold off and sent to the enemy.
At the thought, Wen Nuo felt a dull ache in his heart.

Wu Xingyun perceived that his words hadn’t relieved his old company commander’s frustration, but only upset him further. Wu Xingyun scratched his head. “Commander, I…did I say something wrong?”

Wen Nuo stood up. Hesitating for a moment, he finally put his hand on Wu Xingyun’s shoulder. Then using a little force, Wen Nuo pulled Wu Xingyun into an embrace.

Wen Nuo clung to the soldier. This soldier had been personally recruited by him, and Wen Nuo had painstakingly trained him. Now, because of abominable politics, this proud soldier would be given to the arms of that man.
