DPM Chapter 2-Premarital Training Part 2
Translated by Snowfall77

Wen Nuo softly stroked Wu Xingyun’s back for a time, before saying: “No, you’re not wrong. You’re good, you’ve been fine. The ones who are wrong…It’s those bastards!”

Wu Xingyun figured he really must be wood for brains. He didn’t know how to comfort Wen Nuo. Instead it was Wu Xingyun being treated like a puppy, nestled in the bosom of Wen Nuo whilst being petted.

Eventually, Wen Nuo let go of Wu Xingyun. Wen Nuo’s voice returned to its cool, self-controlled tone: “Xingyun, where is your dormitory? Go pack up your stuff and then follow me.”

Wu Xingyun asked: “Where are we going?”

“They’ve arranged a special residence for you, near Star 2.”

Bending down to pick up Wen Nuo’s hat off the ground, Wu Xingyun answered: “Yes.” He handed the military cap to Wen Nuo, “Company Commander, your hat.”

Wen Nuo, having no alternative, just looked at the soldier in front of him with doting eyes. It seemed child-like Wu Xingyun could not understand why Wen Nuo was so worried.

When Wu Xingyun returned to his dormitory, the other soldiers were done with training for the day. As they saw Wu Xingyun sorting his stuff, they asked curiously, “Sergeant, where are you going?”

Before Wu Xingyun could answer, Wen Nuo’s voice sounded: “It’s classified. Don’t ask. Don’t you know the meaning of ‘confidential?’”

The other soldiers immediately stopped their questions, but still made ‘haha’ noises and winked at Wu Xingyun.

The bold ones started wildly guessing. “The sergeant has a special mission, it’s going to bring honor and glory!”

“No, he’s going to go get himself a wife. The sergeant finally wants to get laid. Look at how he’s smirking.”

On the training ground, Wu Xingyun strictly adhered to regulations and was quite ruthless. No soldier dared joke with him.

But when he returned to the dormitories, he took off his uniform and revealed his simple, honest face. Then the other soldiers felt free to mess around with him.

Wu Xingyun played along, smiling peaceably. “No, it’s because I get to be with Company Commander again. That’s why my heart is glad.”

The soldiers stole side-long glances at Wen Nuo, glowering to the side. His expression was no-good and the men, of their own initiative, avoided him.

Wu Xingyun finished packing soon enough. He and Wen Nuo took an elevator to the surface.

The training grounds were up above, but there were also other locations where huge, transparent domes curved down. Aircraft were sheltered in the domes, and people walking around there were not required to be in uniform.

The two men walked down a wide corridor leading to the flight field, portraits of past heroes hanging on either side. The first combat hero appeared in the Galactic calendar year of 114, and since then numerous more had been added.

It was the year of 2014, in the month of September. And about every twenty years, a famous general would emerge.

Human lives are short. In two thousand years, military heroes had been forged one after the other. Yet, there had always been just one enemy.

Wu Xingyun contemplated the likenesses of the past and couldn’t help asking: “Commander, tell me about that man.”

Wen Nuo slightly turned his head. Walking beside him, he saw a tall and straight soldier.

His original mission was to help Wu Xingyun understand the enemy circumstances as soon as possible. Now Wu Xingyun was asking questions and Wen Nuo didn’t want to answer. Still, Wen Nuo opened with: “That man, from what we know, has lived for 1,900 years.”

“But he looks human, just like us.”

“What I’m about to tell you is absolutely confidential, understand? You know the consequences of leaking state secrets.”

“Yes!” Wu Xingyun confirmed.

Wen Nuo halted. His light gray eyes observed Wu Xingyun as he said solemnly, “He…He is known as the Night Shard. He’s not an alien, not a monster. He has the same ancestors as us.”

“How could he live so long then? Is he that awesome? I saw him once, on an exposed, airless planet…And he wasn’t wearing a protective suit.”

Wen Nuo’s voice became only faintly discernable. “He is the legendary mutant that came after the Great Nirvana. To us ordinary humans, he is the most formidable enemy.”
