DPM Chapter 22-Wedding Night (3) Part 1
Translated by Snowfall77

Wu Xingyun could easily guess the Federation’s response.

The interplanetary broadcast of the wedding, Mozun demonstrating his affection during the ceremony, who would predict that Mozun would suddenly die? Even more unexpected would be the Demon Army suddenly shedding all pretense of peace.

Wu Xingyun feared the Federation would still be immersed in celebrations. Then tomorrow, when the mutants discovered the body of their leader, he’d be dismembered, and then the Demons would wage an unpronounced war, with innumerable dead and injured.

Unprecedently depressed, Wu Xingyun thought of how he’d often lamented about not working hard while young, then regretting in old age. He’d moaned to himself that he hadn’t killed the Night Shard, but now……

He crouched in front of Mozun, quietly looking at the dying man.

A pair of black eyes gazed back, their brightness dimmed. Long, inky hair scattered down, making the face even more cruel and garishly beautiful.

The sound of Mozun’s voice was very low: “I didn’t think you’d kill Ouyang Liu……I hoped Ouyang Liu would get back alive, that way the Federation would brazenly make another big storm. Ouyang Liu would have lied to his father, Marshal Shi Fei would get killed……That would’ve won a lot for my posthumous campaign.”

There was a hint of qualm in Mozun’s voice, but he quickly reverted back to his usual undisturbed tone: “But…It’s impossible for anyone to figure out the future completely……Now this ending, it’s the best I could have hoped for. I didn’t like Ouyang Liu, let him be a traitor……Let the entire Ouyang family became traitors.”

Mozun slightly outstretched his hand, wanting to touch Wu Xingyun’s face, but Wu Xingyun avoided it.

Laughing a little at that, Mozun added: “I leave the honor of killing me to you, aren’t you happy? They’ll write your name in the history books. You’re going to be……Shining throughout the ages……”

Wu Xingyun clenched his jaw and said nothing.

Mozun’s voice tapered off. Wu Xingyun could see the man’s conical wound slowly spreading, as if an awl were squeezing into his interior flesh. Until it would reach the cardiac atrium. And that would be the death of Mozun.

No one could save his life now, Mozun was clear on that. He exhaled a long sigh of relief, half-reclining on the floor, blood still effusing from his wound in meager streams.

“You know, when I saw your true colors, I……I was glad. That there was a person like you to die with me. I’d rather have you with me than someone else.” Mozun’s lids lowered, as if recalling something again, he reached out towards Wu Xingyun: “You and I, we won’t live past the dawn. I don’t want to quarrel on such a night. I was angry that you killed Ouyang Liu, but……I’m dying, and it’s not important anymore……”

Wu Xingyun did not reach out to Mozun’s extended hand. Very aware of his impending fate, Wu Xingyun was just glad that Lu Hai and most the others had already departed. He was more worried about those left behind with him. Farmers, miners, scientists, psychologist, Wu Xingyun’s personal ten-member guard, a little more than fifty people.

When Mozun died, the mutants wouldn’t allow Wu Xingyun to live, let alone any of the other Federation people planet-side.

Yet, what could Wu Xingyun do about it now? He couldn’t even get out of the house to notify anyone. The whole abode was sealed with the last of Mozun’s mental strength, the only way to leave was to wait until after Mozun’s death.

“Come here……I want to hold your hand before I die……” Mozun’s voice was muffled.

Wu Xingyun stayed motionless.

Mozun’s mouth quirked up in a little smile. He made the effort to widen his eyes and take in the sight of the soldier in front of him. The shadow before him gradually overlapped with a shadow from many years ago. How many times did he have to remind himself not to confuse the two people, Mozun chided himself. How could a shameless Federation solider compare with that person?

But at this moment, his life slipping away, he couldn’t remain clear.

“Wu Xingyun? You know what, I……Actually, if I’d known you looked like this, I would’ve never requested you and let you be my wife……”

Making a noncommittal grunt, Wu Xingyun recognized the difference between Mozun and himself. Wu Xingyun still had a strong will to live.

The man before him had no such determination, blood pooling on the floor, his mind blurring, his voice intermittent, the wound still inexorably expanding.

“Because, you look exactly like that person……If I’d known you looked like this, I wouldn’t have let you die……Even if you were the one who killed me……”

“Oh.” Wu Xingyun heard Mozun’s words, but didn’t quite understand their meaning.

“Can you come and hold me……” Mozun’s gaze became unfocused, his voice begging. “The smell of your body is the same as his……”

Wu Xingyun didn’t move, unwilling to meet Mozun’s need.

Mozun sighed. His willpower was apparently disintegrating away, and all the things buried in his heart for so many years, suddenly he wanted to confide them.

“That day, when the world ended, my parents, relatives, everyone was killed…He was the one who appeared in front of me, saved me, and taught me how to live…”

“I loved a person once, never forgot, never forgot that day, I’ve never forgotten how he died……”

“The Federation? The elite? I hate them! What else do they do besides abandon and betray?”

“A thousand years ago, they betrayed me, they betrayed all of us……Thousands of years, they betrayed you……Engraved in the genes……”

“Why negotiate peace? Who will save me when I’m in pain and falling to hell?”

“No……And you, you’re by my side……”

“I’ll avenge you and kill them all! Kill all the people who killed you, especially……Everyone of the Ouyang family……”

Mozun’s voice kept growing fainter and fainter, until finally it was almost inaudible.

Wu Xingyun crouched beside him, quietly looking at him. Listening to Mozun’s deathbed nonsense.

About two thousand years ago, Wu Xingyun pieced together, Mozun had had a lover, who’d looked like Wu Xingyun, and was also a soldier. The Great Nirvana happened, the human elite, facing the end, left in spaceships, abandoning the majority.

Those left sank into purgatory, most died, but Mozun, with the help of his lover, survived.

Yet at some point, the Federation killed Mozun’s lover. And from then on Mozun vowed never to forgive, but avenge to the death.
When he understood, Wu Xingyun felt inexplicably desolate. Even if he didn’t know all the details, a surge of discomfort and sadness came over him.

Mozun’s eyes were closed, as he repeatedly murmured: “I love you……I’ll be with you……Are you happy? All the glory is yours. You killed the demon, are you happy? I love you……”
