DPM Chapter 25-New Tasks Part 4
Translated by Snowfall77

Wu Xingyun continued his report, not hiding anything, including his resemblance to Mozun’s past lover, and the agreement that in ten years’ time, Mozun would send Wu Xingyun back to the Federation.

Finally he’d finished everything he had to tell. Wu Xingyun quietly awaited directives from his superiors.

Wen Nuo spoke first, his complexion looking better, his mouth in a consistent gentle smile. “Wu Xingyun, you don’t have to bear burdens on Yuanxing. If Mozun makes unreasonable demands, you should refuse. Reject them at once! He won’t dare to do anything to you. Ten year from now……The Federation won’t necessarily be afraid of war!”

Shi Fei got up then, patting Wen Nuo on the shoulder, signaling him to shut up.

Wen Nuo snapped his mouth closed.

Shi Fei sighed: “Wu Xingyun.”

Wu Xingyun immediately responded: “Here!”

Shi Fei said: “What Colonel Wen said just now were his own personal thoughts, and do not represent the instructions of the military.”

His mood falling a little, Wu Xingyun acknowledged Shi Fei’s words. “Yes, please give instructions.”

Shi Fei answered: “Right now the Federation is making some moves. Although the peace may prove to be short-lived, for the present, a truce is very important. You have to do whatever it takes to have a good relationship with Mozun. Try to stabilize him, don’t let him tear up the agreement.”

“Yes!” Wu Xingyun had no notion of rebelling against his superior’s orders.

Shi Fei nodded and asked: “Do you have any questions? Do you need any Federation assistance?”

At first, Wu Xingyun shook his head, then he remembered a particular quandary and said: “There is one problem, for which I need guidance from a superior.”

“Whatever it is, say it,” Shi Fei reassured Wu Xingyun.

Unused to talking about certain personal matters with others, it took a while for a befuddled, blushing Wu Xingyun to come out with it. “Mozun……He……I don’t know if it’s because I look like his old lover. Sometimes he’s not compliant with the original agreement. Sometimes……He’ll……” Wu Xingyun didn’t know how to word it, and thought for a minute. “If he has sexual impulses towards me, do I satisfy him? What should I do?”

Before Shi Fei could reply, Wen Nuo’s face paled in a flash. He turned and walked out, saying mildly enough: “I’m a little uncomfortable, I’ll go out first.” His image left the screen display, and Wu Xingyun could no longer see him.

Shi Fei’s expression was awkward, it took him a while to formulate a response. “Try to……Have a good relationship……Though you don’t have to use that method……Of course, if the other side’s requests are strong and sincere……You decide for yourself.”

Wu Xingyun felt a bit dazed. He didn’t know how to decide, that’s why he’d asked. But……Since a superior had instructed him to make the call, he would resolve it for himself.

“Yes,” said Wu Xingyun.

Shi Fei regarded Wu Xingyun kindly, saying after a pause: “Wu Xingyun, I may not see you later. I opposed the Federation and Alliance peace talks at first. But now things have developed to this point, saying anything more is useless. What you can do is make your best effort to have a good relationship with the Night Shard. If Mozun really did treat you as a stand-in, giving up an attack on the Federation, that’s a good thing. You’ve made a great contribution to the Federation. Do you understand what I’m saying?”

Wu Xingyun actually didn’t quite follow Shi Fei’s logic, but he understood what Shi Fei meant by ‘good relationship.’ So he nodded: “Yes, understood!”

Shi Fei nodded back and asked: “Do you need a physiologist to teach you? If necessary, I can arrange it to help make you less miserable when faced with certain problems.”

“No……Marshal, you don’t look very good. Can you tell me what’s going on in the Federation?”

Shi Fei heaved a heavy breath, smiled, and shook his head. “Given the nature of your current work, I can’t tell you……When it’s announced, you’ll see the news. That’s it. The president is here now, looking at your report. He’s going to want to come in later and say a few words to you.”

“Oh.” Wu Xingyun was more concerned about where Wen Nuo had went. There were still a lot of things in his heart to tell Wen Nuo.

However, he hadn’t been able to say anything other than his report.

Wen Nuo didn’t come back though. Wu Xingyun waited, and eventually President Hobbs appeared on the screens.

Hobbs looked the same as before. He expressed appreciation and encouragement for Wu Xingyun’s work during this times, then showed Wu Xingyun a video of greetings from his comrades, along with an update on Wu Xingyun’s family. Until finally getting to the point.

“Wu Xingyun, there’s been some maliciously spread rumors in the Federation. Attacking the government’s policy of peace, and trying to incite sedition and destabilization. Your future task, in addition to getting alone with the Night Shard, is that every other week you need to send back a video that demonstrates your close relationship. The government will release the videos as needed, to stabilize the public. This is important to the Federation. Can you do it?”

Wu Xingyun stood at attention. “Will resolutely complete the task!”

Hobbs nodded, adding: “When you go back today, it’s best to make a video.”

Again, Wu Xingyun affirmed that he would accomplish the mission. Hobbs then stood up and told Wu Xingyun the call was over.

Somewhat melancholy, when Wu Xingyun saw President Hobbs turn to leave, he couldn’t help but ask: “President, I……Can I have a few words with my Company Commander?”

Hobbs: “Your Company Commander?”

Wu Xingyun immediately corrected himself: “Wen……Colonel Wen.”

“You have three minutes.” President Hobbs told Wu Xingyun.

A moment later, Wen Nuo appeared back on the screen, Wu Xingyun looked at him, and the two of them couldn’t think of what to say.
Wu Xingyun had had so much he wanted to tell Wen Nuo, yet now his mind was blank.

The realization had only now fully hit Wu Xingyun. He and his friends, comrades, and family were separated by tens of thousands of light years.

Three minutes quickly ended. Only then did Wu Xingyun manage to spit out one sentence from his heart, the last sentence of the call: “Rest assured, I……No matter what task I’m given, I will try my best to complete it, and never bring you any shame!”

Wen Nuo slowly crouched down, burying his head in his hands, the call ended.

Not long after, a smothered cry came from Wen Nuo’s chest, full of repressed pain and sorrow.

After Wu Xingyun came out, he didn’t go anywhere immediately. Instead he sat in a chair outside the contact room for a long time. In the signal station environment he could pretend he hadn’t left his homeland. He could immerse himself in the collective connection. For a little while.

But in the end, he stood up, walked through the long corridor, and went outside.

Grasslands in the distance were rapidly fading, mountain peaks titian and vast in the afterglow of the sunset.

At that moment, Wu Xingyun experienced unprecedented loneliness, unprecedented homesickness, missing his home, his family , and his friends.
