DPM Chapter 25-New Tasks Part 3
Translated by Snowfall77

Seeing Mozun walk away, Wu Xingyun didn’t know why he felt somewhat disappointed and frustrated. Soon enough though, Wu Xingyun cheered up.

Because, after not having contact for six months, he would finally communicate with the Federation again.

Wu Xingyun put on a clean uniform in his bedroom, adjusted everything to perfection in the mirror, and couldn’t help but smile at his reflection.

In the glass appeared a trim soldier with a bright face.

Ten minutes later, using the base’s newly built small aircraft, Wu Xingyun arrived at the signal station.

The signal station was currently the largest building on Yuanxing, covering about two thousand square meters. The central transmitter pierced through the atmosphere, all the way up into space. The base of the building was a disk structure, and like all Federal buildings, had half its levels underground, leaving only the upper half exposed to the surface.

Wu Xingyun’s spacecraft slowly slid into the station’s docking track. The ship door opened, a small robot coming to greet Wu Xingyun: “Sergeant, please come with me.”

Taking a deep breath, Wu Xingyun followed the bot.

The air hung heavy with the unique smell of Federal architecture, black walls all around, inlaid with pale blue crystals, like the vast starry skies of the cosmos.

After walking through a long passageway, Wu Xingyun arrived at the contact room. Ai Lan had just finished reporting to his superiors, next would be a farmer who was working on energy exploration.

Ai Lan chatted casually with Wu Xingyun outside the room, along with a number of Federal officers who’d also come to make their reports. However, Wu Xingyun belonged to the military, so Ai Lan didn’t know who would be responsible for Wu Xingyun’s future work arrangements.

A half hour later, it was Wu Xingyun’s turn to go in.

Wu Xingyun’s heart burst with excitement. He gave his uniform another smoothing down, and went inside.

The contact room was a completely enclosed small room, with a wall of screens used for signal ordinal numbers.

To prevent eavesdropping, the walls had been isolated with special materials, sound and radio waves unable to spread in the air.

Standing straight in the middle of the room, Wu Xingyun looked at the shifting beams on the main screen, wondering who he would see.

Thousands of beams of light made a thousand forms, sometimes gathering, sometimes separating. After a minute, the beams formed the star logo of the Federation, then gradually faded away, the shadow of a person becoming clear.

The person on the screen, like Wu Xingyun, was wearing a gray military uniform, with gray eyes, a calm, gentle demeanor, and a handsome face. Wen Nuo.

Wu Xingyun instinctively stood at attention and saluted Wen Nuo, noticing at the same time that Wen Nuo’s rank had been promoted from Lieutenant Commander to Colonel. Wu Xingyun speculated that Wen Nuo must have made outstanding contributions to Federal tactics in the past six months, otherwise Wen Nuo wouldn’t have been able to jump ranks so spectacularly. Very happy for Wen Nuo, Wu Xingyun gave him a big grin.

Wen Nuo, on the other hand, didn’t do anything. He just stared at Wu Xingyun, until finally he stood up and returned Wu Xingyun’s salute.

Such a simple thing, but Wu Xingyun felt his eyes were a little wet, his voice a little choked, while his mood lifted even higher.

Wu Xingyun said: “Report. Special Forces Department, Ghost infantry, Second-Class Sergeant Wu Xingyun, reporting!”

However, Wen Nuo’s eyes were abstruse, as if he yearned to reach through the screen and touch the man who was thousands of light years away.

He didn’t follow the prescribed procedures and receive Wu Xingyun’s report. Instead, Wen Nuo asked with a wobbly voice, his gaze locked on Wu Xingyun’s face,: “Wu Xingyun, you’re thin……Are you unhappy?”

A simple greeting, yet Wu Xingyun felt infinite warmth, his smile growing even wider. “No, it’s just that the food here isn’t very good. The Night Shard doesn’t allow much farming, and some seeds were lost. We can only eat wild vegetables every day, so I got skinny.”

Hearing that, Wen Nuo’s head slightly drooped, but a moment later, his expression became clear, tone back to normal: “Your report will be listened to Marshal Shi Fei and myself. Everything you say will be recorded and stored in the archives. This is first-hand information, so your report must be detailed. Understand?”

“Understood!” Wu Xingyun responded.

Wen Nuo’s voice was very gentle: “Marshal Shi Fei has business right now, he’ll return after a while. We’re pressed for time though, so we won’t wait for him. Now, please report in detail your work of the past six months. Start.”

“Yes.” Wu Xingyun saluted again, then began describing what had happened since the day he’d left Deta-Nuo.

When Wu Xingyun had gone through telling the hardships of arriving at Yuanxing, and reached the point where they’d been left on the mid-air platform by Mozun, Shi Fei joined the meeting.

Shi Fei came in without saying hello, sitting in a chair to one side, rubbing his temples. Noticing how tired Shi Fei appeared, Wu Xingyun stopped his report.

Shi Fei kept massaging his head, until he realized that Wu Xingyun wasn’t talking and said: “Continue, what excessive demands did the Night Shard make?”

Then Wu Xingyun felt quite awkward, because Mozun had originally talked about bridal bedrooms, a lot of hot kisses and so on, all of which was rather embarrassing to report.

As he spoke, Wu Xingyun felt his face blush and he couldn’t help lowering his head.

Wen Nuo kept his expression neutral, while Shi Fei seemed absent-minded, until thankfully Wu Xingyun got to the matter of Ouyang Liu.

When Wu Xingyun reported that he killed Ouyang Liu himself, Shi Fei and Wen Nuo were both utterly stunned.

Shi Fei couldn’t believe it. “Ouyang Liu is dead? Why didn’t we get any news of this?”

“The escort team left three months ago, on a ship provided by the Night Shard. Therefore, the ship is relatively low-tech and slow, it wouldn’t have arrived at the Federation yet.” Wu Xingyun replied. “But we’ve calculated that they should have reached the border by now. Oh. Marshal, you’re not patrolling the border, are you? Ouyang Liu gave Mozun your patrol route. I was afraid for you, but we weren’t able to contact the military yet. Then Mozun said he’d keep the peace for ten years. I didn’t know whether his words were true or false.”

“I went on patrol,” Shi Fei told Wu Xingyun, “Along with Vice-President Ouyang Feng. We didn’t encounter any ambushes. What do you mean, peace for ten years? What’s going on?”

Wu Xingyun continued on to his wedding night. When Shi Fei heard about Mozun being half-dead, Shi Fei got angry and shouted: “I said the Night Shard was putting on an act! But no! They worried the Night Shard was too powerful! Fuck!”

Feeling scolded by Shi Fei, Wu Xingyun was at a loss. He said: “Marshal, I know I made an error, I ask for discipline……”

Shi Fei waved a hand and sighed, his voice unable to conceal his fatigue. “Forget about it, the wrong judgements weren’t made by you. It wasn’t you who negotiated the marriage……You’ve made the best of the situation……The Night Shard’s hatred runs deep, he wholeheartedly wants to finish the Federation. Unexpectedly promising ten years of ceasefire……That’s a good thing.”

Knowing that Shi Fei had always been opposed to peace, Wu Xingyun didn’t understand why Shi Fei had changed his tune now, even calling the ten-year armistice a boon.

Wu Xingyun’s instincts told him something was wrong in the Federal government. Although, at Wu Xingyun’s rank, what it was specifically was impossible to know.
