DPM Chapter 28-Negotiation Part 2
Translated by Snowfall77

Wu Xingyun remembered that night, Liu Meng and Mozun quarrelling. Liu Meng had said: “If you fall in love with him, I won’t forgive you, never!”

Wu Xingyun’s heart almost understood what was going on. But if that was the case, why did Mozun say those things to Wu Xingyun? Words that made it hard distinguish what was genuine or fake, shaking people’s will.

Lowering his head, Wu Xingyun didn’t say anything for a long time. His tone a little impatient, Mozun asked, “What the hell is wrong with you?”

“No…….In fact, nothing……I just forget some things, came back to get them,” replied Wu Xingyun.

Mozun nodded, however seeing Wu Xingyun still motionless, Mozun raised his eyebrows. “Why don’t you take it?”

Wu Xingyun took a couple of steps, then turned back to Mozun again. He felt he had to know, so he said: “I, I just wanted to ask, that……What you said before, didn’t count.”

Mozun smiled for a while, looking down on Wu Xingyun, who had buried his head even lower.

“Are you tempted by me?” Mozun asked, nothing in his voice except for ridicule.

Wu Xingyun didn’t speak, finding Mozun hateful, regretting saving the Night Demon on their wedding night.

“Well, you’d better be clear on this. When I acted that way with you before, it was only because you look like my old friend.” Mozun stated.

Mozun’s answer basically matched what Wu Xingyun had figured. The reason Mozun had treated Wu Xingyun well, it’d been entirely for the sake of the past lover. Now that the old dreams were over. Naturally, Mozun began a new life.

Though Mozun’s next words made traces of anger surge in Wu Xingyun’s chest.

“I’d advise you not to have too many fantasies about me, otherwise you’ll become the next Ouyang Liu,” Mozun said lightly.

Suddenly raising his head, Wu Xingyun eyed Mozun. The man was handsome, yet the eyes were frozen, long black hair drifting in the wind like soul-stealing tentacles.

The recollections came crashing back to Wu Xingyun. The three months Ouyang Liu had spend on Yuanxing, his unhesitating betrayal of the Federation, until he’d paid the price of his life.

Wu Xingyun remembered when Ouyang Liu and Mozun had appeared together in front of him, how intimate their relationship had seemed.

Initially, Wu Xingyun wanted to put the blame on Mozun. On the verge of saying what was on his mind, Wu Xingyun stopped. What position did he have to speak?

Perhaps Mozun was right. Ouyang Liu and Wu Xingyun were Federation people, just pawns to Mozun.

Wu Xingyun was even suspicious of the old lover story. Mozun might have made it all up, another pretense to deceive the enemy.

After bowing his head, Wu Xingyun took out a stack of paper, all the requests from the base. He stretched them out to Mozun, saying: “These are some applications for our requirements, I hope you can consider them.”

Mozun did not take the papers. Wu Xingyun had to put them on the ground. When Wu Xingyun turned to leave, Mozun added: “After this, let Ai Lan be the one to come. I don’t want to see you too much.”

Wu Xingyun wanted to ask why, but did not.

Mozun went ahead and explained it anyways. “The honeymoon is already over. I’m tired of reliving old dreams. I don’t want to do it anymore. In the future, this will be the norm between us. I hope you can adapt. In addition, I don’t like being disturbed at night. So if you do have to come and find me, try to do it during the day.”

""

Looking at Mozun, Wu Xingyun found the man in front of him not only ruthless, but also ice-cold.

“Got it,” said Wu Xingyun.

Having said that, Wu Xingyun went downstairs. He had been planning on discussing the details of the Federation requests with Mozun tonight. Now that clearly seemed unnecessary.

Exiting the house, Wu Xingyun heard the airy piano music start again. He kicked a rock, trying to banish his gloominess.

It took more than an hour for Wu Xingyun to return to the base. When everyone saw him actually come back in the middle of the night, they were all surprised. Ai Lan purposefully ran to ask what had happened, however Wu Xingyun didn’t want to talk. Instead, he went to the shooting range to practice for a while, before returning to go to bed.

Base rules were strict. Wu Xingyun wasn’t allowed to bring weapons back to his room. As he lay on his hard bed, unable to touch his gun, he found he couldn’t sleep.

“Don’t have too many fantasies about me, or you’ll be the next Ouyang Liu.”

“It was only because you look like my old friend.”

The words crept their way back into Wu Xingyun’s ears, eventually causing him jump back out of bed, and run to the base practice field to repeatedly punch a sandbag.

Yet even after Wu Xingyun had vented all his physical energy, serenity continued to elude him.

Wu Xingyun plopped himself down on the practice field. Through the transparent ceiling he could see the vast night sky full of stars, unchanging since ancient times.

Unfortunately, Wu Xingyun couldn’t find the same stars he’d used to see at his old training base.

Sighing to the bottom of his heart, Wu Xingyun thought of his home, wishing he could return.

Right at that moment, a guard suddenly ran over, standing at attention in front of Wu Xingyun: “Sergeant, the Federation has called. Please go to the signal station immediately, it’s important.”

Wu Xingyun leapt from the ground, making his way quickly over to the contact room.

The figures of Wen Nuo and President Hobbes appeared on the screens.

“Sergeant, the Federation needs you to come back,” Hobbes said, “Remember the Ouyang Liu issue? His body has been returned and the council is denouncing his death as murder.”

Stunned, Wu Xingyun declared: “It wasn’t murder. Lu Hai and his team were all witnesses!”

President Hobbes shook his head. “Things are a little thorny. Vice President Ouyang Feng has made the accusation that it was Marshal Shi Fei’s plot. Saying that because Ouyang Liu discovered collusion between Shi Fei and the Night Shard, Shi Fei brutally poisoned him. And the data on Ouyang Liu from Yuanxing is receiving a great deal of skepticism. Now the only party who can verify is you. You’ve got to come back to testify.”

Wu Xingyun couldn’t help being stunned, unable to believe what he was hearing. Shi Fei and Mozun colluding? Ouyang Liu learning of their diabolical plot, thus being poisoned? Meanwhile, Wu Xingyun was Shi Fei’s accomplice? What wildly imaginative person had conjured all this up?

President Hobbes went on: “Sergeant, on behalf of the Federal government, I’m calling you back to testify. We all believe Marshal Shi Fei is falsely accused. However, right now he can’t produce favorable evidence of his innocence. The situation is against him. Go talk to the Night Shard, then return to the Federation as soon as possible. It’s best if you leave tonight.”

Worried and shocked about Marshal Shi Fei’s situation, Wu Xingyun wanted to ask for more details. However, Wen Nuo took the lead. “Wu Xingyun, things are very complicated. Right now we don’t have the time to make everything clear. When you get back, we’ll talk in detail. Also, I’ll be picking you up at the border. You just get there as soon as possible.”

Wu Xingyun stood at attention and saluted. “Yes!”

The call ended. Left before the empty screen, Wu Xingyun became anxious.

""

His relationship with Mozun had horribly deteriorated. How could Wu Xingyun persuade Mozun to let him go back?

Or maybe the terribleness between them would actually facilitate Wu Xingyun’s return?

Wu Xingyun’s heart hopelessly perturbed, he packed up his things, then set out again for Mozun’s house.

Although Mozun had said not to search him out again, not to disturb him at night, Wu Xingyun had no intention of dragging the matter out until tomorrow morning. There was even of hint of happiness in Wu Xingyun’s heart, though he didn’t understand why he was feeling cheerful.
