DPM Chapter 31-Trial Part 3
Translated by Snowfall77

A little afraid, his heart pounding, Wu Xingyun looked to Wen Nuo again.

Wen Nuo was still smiling at him, which gave Wu Xingyun a spurt of confidence. He took a deep breath.

The lawyer resumed a relentless cross-examination: “Why didn’t you kill the Night Shard when you learned he was dying?”

His voice calm, Wu Xingyun answered: “Because if he died, the peace would be broken. I don’t want to fight anymore.”

“Why did you save the enemy and kill one of your own people? Can I think that you were already relying on help from the Night Shard?”

“I haven’t.”

“Have you fallen in love with the Night Shard? Is that why you did it for him?”

“That is not true.”

“Don’t you feel any guilt for killing Captain Ouyang Liu?”

“I feel guilty, and I’ve been sad for a while.”

“Are you sad that you murdered him? If you feel so guilty and sad, why kill him in the first place? Can I conclude that you are a hypocritical, dishonest person? Can I further suspect that your false confession is actually a lie?”

Slightly anxious, Wu Xingyun stammered: “I……I’m not lying.”

“What made you believe that Ouyang Liu had committed treason? Do you have any valid evidence?”

“I……” Wu Xingyun’s words stuck in his throat, deterred by the lawyer’s vehemence.

“Why didn’t you detain Ouyang Liu before he got on the ship? Why did you wait until he was abroad before you shot him? Can I understand that you did this as deliberate murder?”

“No, it was not!”

“You slander Captain Ouyang as a traitor, but you can’t produce valid evidence. Can I think that you have a guilty conscience, that you are covering for yourself by shifting the blame to innocent parties?”

“I didn’t! My conscience……not guilty!”

Stumbling over his words, Wu Xingyun’s voice was tinged with a hint of timidity. He hadn’t ever been in a battle like this one. Even though he practiced with Wen Nuo many times, he found it distressingly difficult to face this lawyer who bared fangs and brandished claws.

Wu Xingyun could only keep himself from swearing and not making personal attacks.

But he’d open his mouth to speak, only to be interrupted or drowned out by the lawyer, who managed to completely lead the exchange.

Sweat started to drip down Wu Xingyun’s face, yet he didn’t know how to turn the situation around.

Smiling scornfully at Wu Xingyun, the lawyer felt he’d finished with the soldier who was no match for him, and instead shifted his attention to the jury. “This legendary witness, except for his own imaginings and thoughtless words, cannot produce any favorable, material evidence at all. Given his special relationship with the Night Shard, I ask that he be disqualified as a witness!”

The jury began to discuss amongst themselves, while the lawyer’s facial expression was of someone about to achieve his ambition. At this moment, however, Wu Xingyun opened his mouth. Wu Xingyun had seen Wen Nuo make a prearranged gesture to himself, the secret signal the two had discussed during their rehearsals.

No longer timid or at a loss, Wu Xingyun’s voice became louder: “I have evidence!”

Slightly surprised by Wu Xingyun’s overstepping of bounds, the lawyer turned back to Wu Xingyun: “I’m sorry, given your special relationship with Mozun, and that you can only give one-sided statements, you are not qualified to testify.”

It was unexpected to Wu Xingyun that the lawyer’s words were exactly as they’d been in his pratice sessions. Still, now on firmer ground, Wu Xingyun’s tone stayed tranquil as he recited the words he’d learned by heart: “I have sufficient physical evidence. At the time when I found that Ouyang Liu had fled, along with the ship, I was not wearing an ordinary combat suit, I was wearing a Ghost combat suit. The reason I didn’t immediately arrest Ouyang Liu when I found him was because I overheard a conversation between Mozun and Ouyang Liu. The conversation was recorded by the Ghost combat suit recording system. I now request that the court broadcast it publicly.”

Both the lawyer and Ouyang Feng were taken aback. Apparently, no one had anticipated that Wu Xingyun actually had a recording.

Still, the lawyer promptly rejoined: “It is difficult to ensure the recording hasn’t been altered or tampered with. You have had enough time to do so, and your relationship with the Night Shard……”

The lawyer continuing to speak as predicted, Wu Xingyun interjected at the opportune time, saying: “The protection system of a Ghost combat suit is well-known, and of the highest military grade. The records are easily tested, any alterations would be detected. Therefore, you needn’t worry about me being false. Of course, I’ll assume that your worries were not voiced with malicious intent. I know that you wouldn’t understand the Ghost combat suit protection system, because……You are a lawyer, not a soldier. You have never killed half your enemies on a battlefield.”

Glaring at Wu Xingyun, the lawyer lost a bit of his confidence. After their previous series of exchanges, the lawyer had judged Wu Xingyun as clumsy and slow-witted, quite possibly the weakest opponent the lawyer had ever met. Now, out of nowhere, the soldier’s tongue had sharpened.

The lawyer coughed, somewhat embarrassed.

Wu Xingyun’s gaze sought out Wen Nuo again. Wen Nuo, in turn, beamed and nodded at the successful Wu Xingyun.

Wu Xingyun’s original Ghost combat suit was quickly presented to the court. A professional inspection was carried out, upon which the recordings were declared to be authentic and unaltered in any way.

Thereupon, the video was broadcast to the entire court.

Over the huge screen came the sound of Ouyang Liu’s voice.

“Master Mozun, I’ve always liked you, I would do anything……”

Sighs and hisses sounded in the court.

Then Mozun’s back appeared, his tone lazy, but every word clear: “Forget you? How could that be? I’ve thinking of you all this time. Otherwise, why would I send someone to rescue you, and also help you steal the ship?”

“I left my new bride to come find you.”

Another chorus of disgusted noises.

“Master Mozun, I’ve always admired you. From an early age, when I learned your story, since then you’ve been the only person in my heart……All the Federation people you’ve killed, they deserved it. I’m willing to tell you everything I know. I don’t want anything else, I just want you……Even if it’s just once, just one night, I don’t mind.”

The courtroom sighs turned to lowered curses, even a vague chorus of ‘traitor!’ Ouyang Feng heard it all, a black cloud enveloping him. He’d never dreamed that his son would actually be……So utterly stupid as to get caught red-handed by a recording, to be played before the entire Federation.

Unfortunately for Ouyang Feng, even harder to imagine things lay ahead.

On the recording, Ouyang Liu was actually stripping off his clothes, his voice trembling: “Just one night, Master Mozun……I like you……I’ve always liked you. I’ll tell you the biggest secret……It’s just one night.”

“Master, didn’t you say you liked me?”

“I’ve sold everything to you, I can only rely on you……”

Ouyang Liu’s naked body flooded the screen. Wu Xingyun had changed nothing. Thus with no blurring or pixelation, the video provided quite the appalling spectacle.

“Fuck!”

“Son of a bitch! The shame!”

The cursing gathered steam, Ouyang Feng wishing he could burrow into the ground. He knew clearly, though, that if he hid now, he’d be incapable of salvaging his image. Instead, he must find a way out of his disadvantaged position.

He needed to make a public speech, lament how he’d failed at discipling his son, while also taking a blackening swipe at Shi Fei.

But before Ouyang Feng figured out how what to say, Wu Xingyun spoke first.

Wu Xingyun was flustered, extremely nervous in fact, so his memorized words didn’t come as smoothly as they had earlier.

“The Night Shard……Mozun……His senses are very……Very acute, I had to keep myself from being discovered by him. That……That’s why I didn’t immediately dissuade Captain Ouyang Liu from his mistake.”

The distracted lawyer, shellshocked by the nasty, brain-damaging, truly moronic video he’d just been forced to watch, responded to Wu Xingyun with: “The Night Shard was almost dead, his perceptions could not have been that sensitive. Sergeant, did you deliberately……”

Before the lawyer could finish his sentence, he was roundly scolded by Shi Fei.

“Is your head defective?!” Shi Fei’s ten minutes of silence had expired, and he railed with gusto. “At that time, no one knew the Night Shard was dying! If you’re such a psychic, why didn’t you go and shoot the Night Shard and play the hero yourself? You motherfucking shit for brains!”

Shi Fei’s speech was again banned……

Wu Xingyun did not look to the lawyer again, he looked at the jury. Wen Nuo had just given him the gesture that it was now time to win the jury’s sympathy.

His voice a little rough, he forgot some words in his tenseness: “I……I didn’t mean to……I truly didn’t know the state of the Night Shard……Not only did I not know, no one in the Alliance knew either! I never thought of marrying the enemy. As a soldier, that I can’t defend the Federation on the battlefield, but was compelled to use the method of marriage, that is my disgrace.”

Wu Xingyun’s speech started slipping out more effortlessly, his gestures gradually accentuating his words.

“It’s not only my personal disgrace, it is a disgrace to the Federation, a humiliation to the entire Federation military!”

His hand drew an arc in the air, held it tightly: “The enemy’s bluff made us scared witless, why? Because he’s strong? Because he’s scary? No! Because of our cowardice! We’re terrified of fighting him, we live in fear of him. So we dare not face his conspiracies, his pretenses, or even his weaknesses. We’d rather blame our own people than put the fault on him!”

As Wu Xingyun said these words, his own anger at Mozun naturally rose. He recalled the painful wedding negotiations, not daring to excessively dispute anything with Mozun. In the end, it’d been very difficult to rise up again. To quarrel with Mozun and be driven out. More rage simmered in Wu Xingyun’s heart, not just for the Federation’s failings, but also at himself.

“The mutant population is small. Destroy one and they are one less. While our Federation cannot die. If one dies, more come forward. The final victory will be ours. Except some people, with baffling excuses and ulterior motives, deliberately distort the truth, reversing right and wrong. The Night Shard was in dire straits, yet peace talks were proposed, giving respite to the enemy? What kind of approach was that? All the years of war, was there no consideration of how hated the Federation enemies should be? Instead, such things were disregarded and a soldier was sent to be married in exchange for a peace that didn’t exist. With what intention? A combat veteran was sold off to the enemy. The Marshal, who’s been leading the resistance, was accused of treason, and loyal guardians of the Federation were made into sinners. While those who betrayed the Federation were named heroes. Here, on Liu-Mang-Xing, where there is never darkness, such misrepresentation of the truth absolutely cannot be permitted.”
