DPM Chapter 33-Father-In-Law Part 1
Translated by Snowfall77

“Yes. I’d rather die on the battlefield than be married to you.”

Mozun fell into silence again, his breathing quickening, his heart overwhelmed with depression.

He knew he should declare something to redeem the situation, but had no idea what he could say that would retrieve Wu Xingyun’s heart.

Or, Wu Xingyun’s heart had never allowed Mozun inside in the first place, hence there was nothing to restore.

Mozun quietly thought of many things, yet each sentence he inwardly formulated felt inappropriate.

For a little while, Mozun wondered if he should just forcibly take Wu Xingyun away, whether Wu Xingyun liked it or not. As long as Mozun had Wu Xingyun by his side. Mozun even thought about ruthlessly possessing Wu Xingyun right then and there. Even if Wu Xingyun still didn’t change his mind afterwards, at least Mozun wouldn’t have too much regret. However, another part of Mozun thought that Wu Xingyun should surrender through diplomatic means.

In the end, Mozun did nothing, remaining taciturn.

A small room, a deathly stillness, like a stagnant pool of water, with no reprieve from the lifelessness.

Finally, Mozun opened his mouth: “Is that so……I thought you’d had a little bit of a crush on me.”

“No.” Wu Xingyun replied without thinking. After he said it, he felt a moment of relief, until a wave of emptiness hit. He realized he probably had a tiny sliver of good feelings towards Mozun. Just a speck, not too much.

“If that’s really how you feel……I have nothing pertinent to say. It serves me right……” Surrounded by darkness, Mozun’s voice sounded somewhat hurt. Still, Mozun waged one final struggle to win Wu Xingyun over. “If you don’t come back with me, the symbol of peace for both sides will collapse……You, even if you don’t have feelings for me, don’t you consider any other factors? Like peace, Federation safety, or what not……Your dowry, your dowry is still on Yuanxing, you……Doesn’t that not matter to you anymore? Moreover, there are many estranged marriages in this universe, and we may……Maybe we can continue, and it won’t be as uncomfortable as you think……”

Mozun extended his hand, his tone as gentle as could be, with a trace of hope and expectation: “So, come back with me?”

In the pitch-blackness, a hand reached out to Wu Xingyun.

Wu Xingyun looked up, extreme bewilderment filling his eyes, as thoughts ricocheted through his head. Especially when Mozun had said ‘peace for both sides,’ an overwhelmed Wu Xingyun had felt himself waver.

Yet Wu Xingyun’s heart was clear. Mozun didn’t care about the peace, Mozun was just trying to hold onto Wu Xingyun. The original peace talks had only succeeded because Mozun had been half-dead, However, now the Demon Army was stronger than the Federation military, and didn’t fear war.

For the recovered Mozun, the peace negotiation had no meaning whatsoever. He only existed for battle and revenge.

Wu Xingyun’s conviction began to falter, worrying about the future of the Federation, until he remembered the words of Wen Nuo and Shi Fei: “Wu Xingyun, stay. With the Ouyang Liu incident, the near-death incident of Mozun, domestic public opinion is on our side! Stay and join us in the fight. Let’s completely end the Demon Army! End this absurd farce the warrior’s way!”

His resolve strengthening, Wu Xingyun slowly shook his head. “If you want to fight, after this trial, the Federation will not a peace faction. We are not afraid.”

Mozun’s hand, hovering in mid-air, slowly drooped down. Hearing the speech from Wu Xingyun’s mouth, Mozun knew there was no more leeway for redemption. Perhaps the war could be discussed again, but Mozun had completely lost the heart of this stubborn soldier.

His voice calm, Mozun opened the door of the storeroom, saying to Wu Xingyun crouched in the corner: “Since that’s the case……You’re very determined, I won’t try to force you into anything. I just hope you’ll be happy with your decision.”

When the light streamed in through the opened door, it illuminated everything in the small space, as Mozun thoroughly examined Wu Xingyun.

Wu Xingyun’s eyes were a little red, and he’d become a lot thinner, yet his firm expression stayed steady.

Maybe he had some ineffable feelings in his heart, however Wu Xingyun wouldn’t change his mind. When Mozun had spoken the words, “I don’t want you,” the relationship between the two of them had been ruined beyond repair.

And the trial, along with Ouyang Feng’s series of scandals, had also erased the possibility of them reconciling.

Neither side needed peace anymore, except for Mozun himself.

Mozun leaned over to one side, trying to restrain his emotions, saying: “With great difficulty, I’ve come here this once. Let’s……part without hard feelings. Like real sweethearts, let’s spend one last afternoon together, alright? I’ll leave in the evening. From now on, I won’t harass you again. I’ll still abide by our peace agreement, I will……Keep it until your death.”

Making his final request desperately, Mozun didn’t expect Wu Xingyun would actually agree. Yet Wu Xingyun almost inaudibly said “alright.”

The word ‘alright’ made Mozun’s mind go blank, until he realized it was just Wu Xingyun giving him ‘the last supper.’

From the corner of his mouth, Mozun managed to squeeze out a smile, again reaching out a hand to Wu Xingyun: “Can I help you up?”

Wu Xingyun hesitated for a little while, finally extending his hand. A strong force exerted, and Wu Xingyun rose up at once. Mozun abided by his own words. He didn’t pull Wu Xingyun into his arms, although he very much wanted to. Since it was their final time together, Mozun didn’t want to provoke Wu Xingyun.

The two men stood face to face for a moment, Mozun searching Wu Xingyun’s face. In Wu Xingyun’s eyes, wasn’t that a faint trace of attachment? Only a hint, nothing more.

Mozun swung his palm, trying to clasp Wu Xingyun’s fingers within his own, but Wu Xingyun drew his hand away: “If you don’t want to be recognized, it’d be best for you to keep a certain distance from me.”

His expression surging with undercurrents, Mozun was still unresigned: “Are you caring about me? Afraid I’ll be recognized? Afraid I’m going to get hurt in an ambush?”

“No……” Wu Xingyun said, “I just don’t want any trouble.”

Mozun laughed, a hint of bitterness in the sound.

In the endless life to come, the two would probably never meet again. So, in this short last time, Mozun hoped it would be as beautiful as possible, in order to store up good memories for himself.

He hoped Wu Xingyun would remember it too, even if Wu Xingyun stubbornly refused to stay with Mozun. Even if the Federation changed directions. And even if Wu Xingyun didn’t have to go back to the Alliance territory. Mozun wished that, in the future, when Wu Xingyun grew old and happened to recollect this afternoon, the memory would make Wu Xingyun comfortable and happy.
