DPM Chapter 33-Father-In-Law Part 2
Translated by Snowfall77

“If you don’t mind, I can go with you to see your parents.” Mozun opened his mouth first, knowing that Wu Xingyun hadn’t seen his parents for several years. Back on Yuanxing, Wu Xingyun had often mentioned them.

Wu Xingyun shook his head: “No……I’ll probably be with my parents this afternoon, and in the evening I’m going to a show with them.”

Mozun’s eyes were full of tenderness.

After a moment, Wu Xingyun said: “You……Had better go! It wouldn’t be good if someone finds out……”

Tenacious, Mozun persisted terribly: “I’ve never met your parents since we got married. I think I should meet them, anyways……I’ll leave on my own. My parents died early, I just want to have a meal with you, as a family. It’s a small wish, no other meaning. And I promise I won’t cause any trouble.”

Wu Xingyun didn’t insist any further, so the two men walked the streets of Liu-Mang-Xing, until stopping at a station and waiting for an airbus.

Trees with heart-shaped leaves grew everywhere on Liu-Mang-Xing. With no true seasonal or temperature changes, the trees were always in a constant cycle of leaves falling and growing anew.

Golden hearts fluttered down and layered the road, as the shade of the trees hovered over the station, sunlight leaking through the leaves, forming mottled shadows on the ground.

Wu Xingyun and Mozun stood together, yet they weren’t very close, let alone holding hands. Wu Xingyun’s body was in standard military posture, while Mozun had his hands in his pockets, though he’d removed his hat and sunglasses.

The two chatted casually. Since they both knew the relationship would soon end, they were more lenient with each other.

“The environment here is nice, it’s a good place for your parents’ retirement,” Mozun said.

“Well, when my dad was at the mining site, he said his greatest wish was to have a house on Liu-Mang-Xing. To live here, and do nothing all day long except count leaves.” Wu Xingyun replied.

Mozun chuckled, looking at Wu Xingyun. The small soldier’s appearance was plain, nothing to write home about. The eyes, however, made people fall in love unawares. Pure, naïve, and very obstinate.

“My dad’s biggest wish was to eat ‘Xihucuyu’ fish by the Xihu Lake. Unfortunately, although he went there many times, he was too busy with work, he never had time to eat.” Mozun’s tone was very mild, his attitude casual, as if they were ordinary friends having a conversation.

Wu Xingyun knew Mozun was talking about his deceased father, over two thousand years ago on Earth.

“Actually,” Wu Xingyun said, “I don’t think you’re as scary as they say, just sometimes you’re very disagreeable.”

Mozun nodded, pointing at the airbus in the distance: “It’s coming, let’s go.”

They got onto the bus together and sat by a window. The bus was full of people, some standing around. One girl in particular gazed intently at Mozun, then whispered to her friends: “Look! That person looks like the Night Shard.”

“How can that be? He looks completely different!”

Given that the airbus traveled sixteen times faster than the speed of sound, Wu Xingyun and Mozun arrived quickly at their stop.
Their destination was a residential area. The buildings were not tall or squeezed together, some reinforced concrete structures on either side of the street, a few street vendors hawking their goods, bustling supermarkets, and even neighboring farmers selling fresh vegetables.

Although Wu Xingyun repeatedly emphasized that there was no need, Mozun felt it was bad manners to not bring a gift to Wu Xingyun’s parents on his first visit.

Mozun picked out a native to Liu-Mang-Xing, fat-eared beast from a local farmer as his ‘jianmianli’, but when he went to pay for it, he found himself without Federal money. He had some Alliance money, with his own lovely portrait printed on it, and although it might circulate elsewhere in the Federation, on Liu-Mang-Xing such currency was not accepted.

Having to fish out his wallet to pay for the animal, Wu Xingyun wasn’t too happy. “You said you’re going to give my parents a gift, why are you spending my money?!”

Mozun felt a little apologetic. When Wu Xingyun remembered this afternoon in the future, Mozun didn’t want it blemished by the one thousand Federal coins Mozun owed the soldier.

“I’ll pay you back. Consider it a loan.” Mozun told Wu Xingyun.

“Oh,” was all Wu Xingyun said. Still, Mozun had to give up his idea of buying other things. He carried the fat-eared beast, which was less than half a meter high, Wu Xingyun trailing after him, as they searched for Wu Xingyun’s parents’ address together.

Wu Xingyun looked for the right door number for a while, before finding his parents were in an unit on the sixth floor.

As the two were waiting for the elevator, they met a middle-aged lady who stared at Wu Xingyun for a long time, before asking: “Hey, aren’t you Wu Sanyang’s son?”

Wu Xingyun promptly shouted: “Yes Ma’am……”

The lady nodded her head repeatedly. “I saw you on the television! Didn’t you go and get married? Why are you back……No……You’re not going to war again, are you?”

Mozun interjected: “He’s just back to visit his family. It’s an Alliance custom.”

The middle-aged lady went ‘ah,’ the sixth floor arrived, and Wu Xingyun and Mozun got off the elevator.

As the elevator door slowly closed, the lady looked thoughtful: “How unexpected, that you can actually come back alive to see your parents! I guess the Night Demon isn’t so brutal……Oh, who’s this young man with you? He looks a little familiar……”

Wu Xingyun and Mozun stood outside the home together.

The door had been opened for a while. Inside was Wu Xingyun’s whole family, his parents, his three brothers, and two sisters-in-law.

Three people were watching the television, and didn’t think much of it when they heard the doorbell. When Wu Xingyun came in, Wu Xingyun’s father slapped him upside the head: “Little bastard, you finally came back! We’ve missed you……”

Then Father Wu stopped his words short. He spotted Mozun, carrying the animal in one hand.

Unsure of how to react, Father Wu asked: “Little bastard, is this your friend?”

Mozun bowed to Father Wu, gripping his gift, and came into the room: “Father, I am his man, called Mozun.”

‘xihucuyu’ fish by the Xihu Lake
West Lake (Chinese: 西湖; pinyin: Xī Hú; Wu: Si-wu) is a freshwater lake in Hangzhou, China. It is divided into five sections by three causeways. There are numerous temples, pagodas, gardens, and artificial islands within the lake.
West Lake has influenced poets and painters throughout Chinese history for its natural beauty and historic relics, and it has also been among the most important sources of inspiration for Chinese garden designers.[1] It was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011, described as having “influenced garden design in the rest of China as well as Japan and Korea over the centuries”[2] and reflecting “an idealized fusion between humans and nature”.[2]
