DPM Chapter 36-Hunting A Devil Part 1
Translated by Snowfall77

As soon as Wu Xingyun closed the front door of his parents’ home, his phone began to buzz again. He checked and Wen Nuo had sent another text message: “Have you left?”

Wu Xingyun waited for the elevator while replying: “I’ve come out.”

The next message: “Special mission, urgent action. Now entering dormancy period. Do not expose yourself. Pick up your assignment in the 601 mailbox on the first floor.”

Suffocation filled Wu Xingyun’s chest. Entering the dormancy period meant that he was about to perform a special task and must immediately vanish from anyone’s radar. He could contact no one, not even his parents to say hello.

In the past, Wu Xingyun had executed this kind of mission many times. In the military, if someone disappeared, ordinary soldiers knew not to ask too many questions. One time, Wu Xingyun’s mother had come to see him, just when he’d been about to carry out a special mission. He’d been grabbed out of the bathroom and didn’t return. Mother Wu had waited in the meeting room for two full hours, until a senior officer came over to apologize to her.

The elevator dropped at lightning speed, Wu Xingyun’s mind blank, when he suddenly remembered Mozun was still waiting in his parents’ home.

Should he……Contact Mozun?

Wu Xingyun took out his cell phone, pushed two buttons, only to stop.

When his mother returned, she’d explain things to Mozun. Wu Xingyun shouldn’t violate discipline for such a small matter.

Ding. The elevator door opened. Wu Xingyun walked over to the row of mailboxes in the lobby, opened the mailbox and took out a thick envelope.

Inside the envelope was a chip requiring a verification code. Wu Xingyun inserted the chip into his phone and entered his password.

Details of the task appeared.

The text was very simple and clear, the mission name: Hunting a Devil.

Wu Xingyun’s immediate assignment was even simpler. Get to the city’s B exit, via an isolated underground passage, being careful to remain concealed and not meet anyone by accident.

Scratching his head, Wu Xingyun was confused by his task. But he didn’t puzzle too much, instead obediently following the issued requirements.

When he passed the neighborhood square, he felt something wrong. He was completely by himself, no one else around. It was just past dinnertime, when the suns of Liu-Mang-Xing were at an oblique angle, usually the optimum time for people to amble about.

A little abnormal, Wu Xingyun thought silently in his heart, it looked like a cleared pre-battle site.

Filled with misgivings, Wu Xingyun walked towards the underpass, spotting a bioelectric signal transmitter at the entrance.

Wu Xingyun got on the exit’s conveyor belt and sent a text message to Wen Nuo asking: “Is there a fight nearby? I just saw the signal transmitter and the surrounding area is deserted.”

As the belt moved, Wen Nuo’s response came quickly: “Confidential.”

Wu Xingyun posed no more questions, glancing around and finding himself the only person on the entire conveyor belt. It wasn’t reasonable.

Scratching his head, Wu Xingyun fiddled with his phone. He felt he should give Mozun a call, tell Mozun he wouldn’t be coming back. If Mozun kept foolishly waiting for Wu Xingyun at his parents’ home, it could cause some trouble.

But just as Wu Xingyun was about to make the call, he came to a sudden realization.

The details converged, the fog cleared. His brothers had been called out one by one, then his parents had left and not returned. There was not a soul to be seen, yet there was a bioelectric transmitter. And apparently, he was the last person to evacuate.

Everything added up to a big battle.

And who was the bioelectric transmitter for?

Ordinary people couldn’t sense bioelectric currents. Only the acutely perceptive Mozun would be able to use the currents to detect other people.

The population of the entire area had been pulled out, while deceptive transmitters had been deployed, all of it arranged to deal with……It went without saying.

Wu Xingyun recalled earlier in the day, when Wen Nuo and Mozun had met face to face in the court corridor. Although Mozun had changed his hair and clothing, made himself not easily recognizable……Clearly, Wen Nuo had still detected Mozun’s identity.

Now Wu Xingyun understood the name of the mission, what it meant to hunt a devil. It meant the Federation was stalking the Night Shard.

Wu Xingyun’s hands started shaking. He’d almost phoned Mozun, until he became aware that this mission was to kill the Night Shard. Now he hesitated.

Because the meaning of the telephone call had changed. It would no longer be informing a guest, but treason in a time of war.

However, if Wu Xingyun didn’t warn Mozun, there was no doubt that Mozun would be ambushed. Mozun……when he understand the cause and effects, would he be heartbroken?

Several times Wu Xingyun went to dial his phone, and several times he lowered it back down. Two voices fought in his heart, leaving him unsure of what to do.

His legs felt weak. He squatted down unconsciously, another thought banging around in his head. The military equipment of Liu-Mang-Xing was hardly perfect, it wasn’t a military base and had no WMDs (weapons of mass destruction). Even the star port was civilian. Wen Nuo wouldn’t have been able to mobilize a large number of troops in such a short amount of time. Meaning, if there was to be a fight, the Federation was rushing, without a way to fatally strike the Night Shard. Instead, it was the arduously obtained peace that would be wrecked.

Wu Xingyun tried to tell himself he was thinking too much. Maybe this wasn’t all aimed at Mozun. Without the guarantee of a victory, cautious Wen Nuo wouldn’t ambush Mozun on a planet like Liu-Mang-Xing, where the political reigned over the militaristic.

Therefore, perhaps this was a plan for something else……

His mind a mess, Wu Xingyun held his phone, the number for his parents’ house punched in. He’d almost pressed the call button multiple times, yet couldn’t.

Ding. The conveyor belt had arrived at the station.

Several heavily armed soldiers marched over to Wu Xingyun and saluted, stating that a body search was required.

Wu Xingyun’s phone was confiscated, his chance to make a call ended.
