Chapter 37-Breakout
Translated by Snowfall77

Mozun was still alive. When the siege had begun, he’d considered the various strategies the Federation would follow.

The enemy would inevitably lead with firepower, next a human wave attack, neither which would defeat Mozun, to be followed by the Federation’s most advanced weapon—Ghost soldiers.

Knowing that his weakened senses wouldn’t able to detect that kind of soldier lurking in the shadows, Mozun decided to quietly stay put. He’d been waiting at Wu Xingyun’s parents’ home. Even as the whole building was destroyed, Mozun stayed in place, making his arrangements for the imminent Ghost soldiers.

He’d devised a surrounding disguise, one that would deliberately guide the Ghost soldier into a forward route. Once the Ghost soldier arrived, they would only see the Night Shard’s back.

Mozun had no special protection measures. A Ghost’s soldier’s bullet could pierce through a ship’s shield, and Mozun was incapable of warding that off.

So he could only concentrate all his spiritual force and strength behind his heart.

Ghost soldiers would come, undoubtedly choosing a fatal shot. If the point was the heart, then Mozun was prepared and likely wouldn’t be injured.

If the soldier chose somewhere else, Mozun’s power wasn’t enough to protect his entire body. But other places wouldn’t be fatal, giving Mozun a chance.

It was a simple plan. When the Ghost soldier hit Mozun, he’d play dead.

The tactic of playing dead, Mozun didn’t know how many times he’d used it during the period of the Great Nirvana. He was sufficiently skilled at it to deceive any instrument.

After he was ‘killed,’ the Ghost soldier would promptly report to their superiors, and according to Mozun’s years of experience, Shi Fei would send additional troops. All Mozun needed to do was contain the Ghost soldier, steal an armored vehicle, use that to escape the Federation encirclement, find a fighter plane and flee.

The one weakness of his plan was his inability to cope with more than two Ghost soldiers at the same time.

Therefore, Mozun deliberately created four potential hiding spots. He figured that the Federation would be able to deploy no more than two Ghost soldiers in such a short period of time. Placing his fake signal at the other three places, he’d know if a Ghost soldier reached them, and be suitably forewarned.

Everything was readied. The one thing left to do was wait.

Except what Mozun hadn’t foreseen was that Wen Nuo had found four Ghost soldiers, one for each hiding place.

He also hadn’t believed that one of the soldiers who came to kill him would be Wu Xingyun.

No. He’d known the Federation had Wu Xingyun nestled at their center. There had been no phone call from Wu Xingyun. Mozun knew it meant that Wu Xingyun had chosen the Federation. And of course, since Wu Xingyun was a good Ghost soldier, the Federation would do everything it could to mobilize him.

Maybe what Mozun had refused to anticipate was that it would Wu Xingyun who found Mozun’s real hiding spot.

But it really was Wu Xingyun. Wu Xingyun who, once again, tried to kill Mozun.

In the eyes of Mozun, the color of his disappointment couldn’t be seen, leaving only the cold and the ruthlessness.

And when Wu Xingyun saw Mozun standing unscathed behind him, Wu Xingyun knew—everything was over.

At that moment, Wu Xingyun had no thoughts of resistance or evading.

He helplessly watched as Mozun came to him step by step. Mozun reached out a hand for Wu Xingyun’s neck, while Wu Xingyun subconsciously tried to pull his gun out for self-defense. Yet Mozun easily seized Wu Xingyun’s gun, making Wu Xingyun his captive.

" "

Mozun tightened his grip, his strong, sturdy arm almost choking Wu Xingyun.

“Don’t be delusional. No one is going to kill me!” Mozun’s tone was ferocious, his gaze sharp like a knife. “You can’t even kill me when you’re a ghost. It’s that much more impossible now.”

Mozun dragged Wu Xingyun to the makeshift defenses, decisively disconnecting Wu Xingyun’s communication device.

The sunlight blazed exceptionally hot, four suns currently to be seen in the sky. Without the protection of his helmet, Wu Xingyun perspired head to foot. In addition, he’d had just one meal over the past few days. Having expended all his energy trying to ambush Mozun, he felt incredibly weak.

If he was killed by Mozun, so be it. In his heart, Wu Xingyun had lost his will to live. He lowered his eyelids, leaning into Mozun’s embrace, feeling a burst of complete exhaustion. He wanted to recline against that broad chest, make himself a little more comfortable.

Mozun didn’t speak, patiently expecting company. Wu Xingyun had reported Mozun’s supposed death, thus Federation troops would arrive shortly.

It didn’t take long for the armored vehicles to show up, and even better than Mozun had hoped for, there was a small fighter plane flying low, just fifty meters above the ground.

Several soldiers vigilantly advanced on foot, guns at the ready. Mozun stealthily looked out from behind his barricade. Apparently, Wen Nuo had also come.

“Ghost soldier, where are you? Please respond!” The soldiers shouted loudly. Then Wen Nuo waved his hand, signaling the crowd to stop yelling. Wen Nuo was well aware that Wu Xingyun was probably currently heartbroken, unable to respond to anyone’s call, mired in a painful stupor.

Pointing to the obstacles hiding Mozun, Wen Nuo ordered: “It should be there. Go and check it out, the fighters have sped up their patrols.”

The soldiers carefully forged ahead, when suddenly a huge black shadow jumped out, with inordinate speed and explosive force.

Wen Nuo quickly got down, however the target of the black shadow was not the soldiers on the ground, but the low-flying fighter plane.

" "

Mozun, as Wen Nuo had planned for, was weak. Continuously battling for several days in a row, Mozun had suffered serious physical depletion, using up almost all his power to resist Wu Xingyun’s ambush. He was nearing the point of collapse.

Nonetheless, Mozun’s tenacity hadn’t failed him yet. The conviction in his heart remained resolute. He was not going to die. He would live! He’d possessed his belief since the Great Nirvana, and his faith had never changed.

Still, Mozun’s strength wasn’t what it ordinarily was, and carrying Wu Xingyun made things more difficult. The leap exhausted nearly all Mozun’s capacity.

All the same, with his jump Mozun reached the plane. Another turn and hop, and Mozun stood atop the glass cover of the cockpit.

No need to say anything. Mozun smashed the glass with a single punch, pulled out the ashen-faced pilot, throwing him downward. Next Mozun tossed Wu Xingyun inside, before getting in himself.

A series of actions, eminently fast, almost faster than the blink of an eye.

When Mozun had already launched the plane into the atmosphere of Liu-Mang-Xing, the pilot hadn’t yet landed.

Dumbstruck, Wen Nuo could hardly believe what he’d just witnessed. Enduring through many days of siege, being wounded by a Ghost soldier, the weakened enemy was still able to burst forth with such intensity, even grabbing a fighter plane.

The speed of the plane was exceptional, Wen Nuo could not give an order fast enough. It was already a small black spot disappearing into the sky, leaving a thin white cloud as vestige of its velocity.

Recovering after half a second, Wen Nuo commanded: “The Night Shard has escaped. He is piloting a B231 fighter, it doesn’t support spaceflight. He should be—seriously injured. He won’t be able to make it far. Mobilize! We will hem him in!”

The plane barreled through the sky. At lower altitudes the wind had snaked in through the broken shield, now high in the atmosphere, Wu Xingyun felt the cold and the air was thin.

He thought that if he died like this, it would be fine too.

From the beginning to the present, Wu Xingyun hadn’t spoken a word. The swirling gusts filled his ears, the glacial-cold sinking into his body, his lungs struggling for air.

Thump. A helmet was thrown into Wu Xingyun’s arms, Mozun saying icily: “You’re not allowed to die. If you dare die now, I’ll kill all your family and friends.”

Mechanically, Wu Xingyun put on his previously removed helmet, two thoughts repeatedly circling in his head. Mozun was still alive. He, Wu Xingyun, was done for.

Soon enough, the plane broke through the planet’s atmosphere, zooming into space.

On the ground, other fighter planes were taking off, coming to chase the Night Shard.

The B231 plane was originally for ground combat, being small, with high energy consumption. It was fast, but not build for traveling long distances.

Generally, it was used as a sub-machine of aircraft carriers. Mozun clearly understood the limitations of the plane, so when they reached space, he looked around and spotted a nearby asteroid of Liu-Mang-Xing.

The corners of Mozun’s mouth curled up almost imperceptibly. He’d heard Wu Xingyun and Wen Nuo mention the asteroid, the location of the Federal Military Museum.

Although the museum would be filled with antiques, some of them would make suitable weapons.

This time, Mozun must safely return to the Alliance, and…… Never again would Mozun take into account Wu Xingyun’s personal wishes.

Slightly turning his head, Mozun eyed the silent Wu Xingyun, who was acting like an unresisting, soulless puppet.

Divorce? An amicable break-up? One last good memory?

Mozun sneered to himself. Yes, that’s what he had planned, because he hadn’t wanted to personally destroy whatever good impression Wu Xingyun had left of his husband. Mozun had wanted to give the one he’d loved proper respect.

But the reason the Night Shard became a demon wasn’t because he was a kindhearted and benevolent man. If people didn’t offend him, he didn’t imprison them. However, if someone committed a crime against him, he’d make them wish they’d never been born.

From the perspective of an Earthling, outer space is a zone that occurs about 100 kilometers (60 miles) above the planet, where there is no appreciable air to breathe or to scatter light. In that area, blue gives way to black because oxygen molecules are not in enough abundance to make the sky blue.
Further, space is a vacuum, meaning that sound cannot carry because molecules are not close enough together to transmit sound between them. That’s not to say that space is empty, however. Gas, dust and other bits of matter float around “emptier” areas of the universe, while more crowded regions can host planets, stars and galaxies.
No one knows exactly how big space is. The difficulty arises because of what we can see in our detectors. We measure long distances in space in “light-years,” representing the distance it takes for light to travel in a year (roughly 5.8 trillion miles, or 9.3 trillion kilometers).
From light that is visible in our telescopes, we have charted galaxies reaching almost as far back as the Big Bang, which is thought to have started our universe 13.7 billion years ago. This means we can “see” into space at a distance of almost 13.7 billion light-years. However, astronomers are not sure if our universe is the only universe that exists. This means that space could be a lot bigger than it appears to us.
