DPM Chapter 4-Premarital Training (3) Part 1
Translated by Snowfall77

Wu Xingyun nodded in understanding. “I robbed him of his mission, so he’s not happy.”

“It was the council’s decision, a pick they made in private,” Wen Nuo explained, “Then the Night Shard said it had to be you. But it’s not a glorious task. Why should he try snatch it away?”

Wu Xingyun lapsed into a depressed silence as Wen Nuo led him to his new residence. There was a downstairs with a living room, dining room, and training room. The second level held the bedroom, study, and research room.

Wen Nuo took Wu Xingyun to the bright and spacious bedroom. There were five pristine bunkbeds, enough to sleep ten people. Like Wu Xingyun was used to, there storage boxes at the entry and each bed had a nightstand.

Wu Xingyun exclaimed in slight surprise: “Commander, our sleeping quarters are exactly the same!”

“I’m used to living down below, I can’t hardly sleep like this.” Wen Nuo commented. “And there aren’t eight other people to live here. It’s just the two of us. Also, stop calling me company commander. Call me Wen Nuo.”

Wu Xingyun struggled with the breach of protocol. “But regulations say…”

“If you’re going to follow the rules, you should be addressing me as Major! It’s Wen Nuo.” Taking off his coat, Wen Nuo hung it up and changed into a casual suit.

Abandoning his reservations, Wu Xingyun asked: “Wen Nuo, when does the training began?”

Wen Nuo considered. “Are you tired? Do you want to have a night off and start tomorrow?”

Wu Xingyun shook his head. “I’m not tired, and I would like to start preparing now. At least a little.”

Wen Nuo felt reluctant, and muttered inwardly: “That eager to get married?” But his complaint couldn’t be uttered out loud, so he said, “Alright, come with me to the study. I’ll bring up basic Night Shard info for you.”

In the study, there was a small hologram projector. Wen Nuo turned it on, entering his password and opening a top secret Night Shard file.

Nearly two hundred flat lights automatically turned dark as a young man’s image flickered in the middle of the study’s open space.

He appeared to be about twenty-five years old, long, dark hair loosely tied back. A black leather coat covered his body, the only pattern a curved, scarlet moon on his chest. As if carved by the hand of God, his absolutely perfect face exuded coldness. His eyes shone bright as stars in pitch, with a devilish, bloodthirsty smile hanging on his lips.

At the bottom right of the hologram, there was a line-‘War Criminal: Night Shard/Mozun.’ Next were listed his height, weight and various other stats.

About to start talking, Wen Nuo noticed Wu Xingyun busily tapping away at his tablet.

Wen Nuo asked: “Wu Xingyun, what are you doing? If you’re tired, go rest.”

Wu Xingyun shot upright and saluted. “Report! I’m taking notes, Sir.”

“You know who he is?”

“Yes, I’ve seen him. And it’s written below: ‘War Criminal: Night Shard/Mozun.’”

“Then why take notes?”

“The council…hasn’t it been arranged for me to marry him? I…I’m recording his data in order to…Well, in order to get the job done better.” Wu Xingyun spoke honestly, but diffidently. He felt something was amiss with his answer, but couldn’t articulate it. Not wanting to get rebuked by a superior, he chose to sheepishly chuckle, showing his white teeth.

""

Wen Nuo did want to scold Wu Xingyun. But when he saw the soldier’s smile, his heart melted. Powerless, Wen Nuo gave up.

Wu Xingyun put his tablet away and listened carefully.

“To understand the Night Shard, you have to know his history. To know his history, you have to know the history of mankind, and the Great Nirvana.” Wen Nuo spoke slowly. “Wu Xingyun, do you remember learning about humans and the Great Nirvana?”

Wu Xingyun immediately stood up: “Report. The earliest origin of mankind is the Earth, where humans spent more than four million years. On Earth, humans evolved from the original Australopithecus. Two thousand years ago, human technology achieved solar system travel, successfully landing on Earth’s moon. This was also a turning point in humanity’s fate.”

Wen Nuo put his hand on Wu Xingyun’s shoulder, motioning for Wu Xingyun to sit down again.

Seating himself beside Wu Xingyun, Wen Nuo looked at his soldier in the darkness.

The soldier was serious, sitting straight, legs precise, hands on his knees. Altogether, perfect positioning.

Seeing such a person, so close and yet unable to touch, Wen Nuo endured a dull, internal ache. He listened to Wu Xingyun recite middle school knowledge of the ‘Great Nirvana.’

“The Great Nirvana occurred a little later. At that time, humans called it Judgement Day. Around 2014, there began to be unusually hot weather. Then on a night filled with lightning, creatures abruptly mutated. The survival of mankind under threat, humans decided to use nuclear weapons to solve the problem.”

Wu Xingyun continued. “Use of nuclear weapons brought about a nuclear winter. Mutations became even more terrible. Finally, humans had to abandon Earth. They left on October 1, 2015 in spaceships, to search for new places to settle.

Five thousand scientists, 10,000 human elites, and 30,000 eventually found a planet suitable for human habitation, after a lengthy, remarkable effort. There, they redeveloped and thrived. With a rapid advancement of technology, humans spread throughout the universe.

The Galactic calendar begins when humans departed Earth. Later generations called the Earth’s change the ‘Great Nirvana.’ Wen Nuo, why is it called Great Nirvana?”

Wu Xingyun, after rattling off his knowledge, asked a long-pondered question.

His middle school teacher had told Wu Xingyun that the ‘Great Nirvana’ referred to humans fleeing the Earth and discovering a new haven. But Wu Xingyun had always felt there must be a deeper meaning.
