DPM Chapter 41-Spending The Night Together Part 2
Translated by Snowfall77

Fortunately for Ye Fan’s head, the snow on the valley floor was thick. He hadn’t landed on any rocks, sparing himself some major pain. Getting up, Ye Fan wiped his face, saying to Wu Xingyun with a slightly embarrassed expression: “I……I’ll strive hard……”

“Hmm.” Wu Xingyun was merely happy that the weather was milder in the valley, as the two of them walked together towards the overturned car.

It was a minivan, the two passengers dead. Wu Xingyun and Ye Fan towed the bodies out and climbed in themselves, finally able to rest for a while.

Ye Fan was gasping. He’d never seen dead people before. Only now, for the past two days, the dead were everywhere, and he’d even dragged one out by himself.

Thinking about it, Ye Fan stealthily stole glances at the soldier.

The soldier seemed completely unperturbed, calm and cool-headed, in spite of a slightly boyish face.

Ye Fan tried to guess the soldier’s age. Twenty, maybe twenty-one? Had the soldier killed people? How many people? Dealing with the dead bodies, the soldier had been completely composed. He’d probably been on the battlefield?

After resting a bit, the soldier turned to Ye Fan and said: “Go take a bath.”

Ye Fan stared blankly, and Wu Xingyun explained: “In the wilderness, you should keep your body clean to prevent infections. The situation might get worse, you should wash at least once every three days. When there’s snow, use snow. When there’s water, use water. And in the desert, use sand. When there’s nothing, take an air bath.”

Nodding, Ye Fan opened the car door, then suddenly thought of something: “Mister Soldier, what about you? Let’s wash together!”

For no reason, Wu Xingyun recalled his marriage to Mozun. Mozun had said similar things sometimes.

Distracted, it took Wu Xingyun a minute to shake his head: “We’ll take turns, the other person should stand guard.”

Ye Fan said no more. He quickly ran outside, undressed, grabbed snow and wiped down his body a few times, shivering in the cold.

Meanwhile, Wu Xingyun stood on the roof of the car, vigilantly watching the surrounding area, gun in hand, in case someone came to attack Ye Fan. When his eyes inadvertently skimmed Ye Fan, Wu Xingyun saw that Ye Fan was unusually strong. The young man in the snow appeared healthy and sturdy. Was it Ye Fan’s physical capital that enabled him to survive the end times and long into the future?

Wu Xingyun also noticed that Ye Fan had wounds in many places. Some were just bruises, but when Ye Fan rubbed snow over them, he grimaced in pain.

Taking out his backpack, Wu Xingyun rummaged for a while before finding what he was looking for. Wu Xingyun then threw the iodine spray at Ye Fan’s feet, immediately turning his head.

Because the Night Shard was naked and facing the soldier, Wu Xingyun had seen some things he shouldn’t see.

Ye Fan picked up the iodine spray, applying it where needed. After that, he got dressed, draped the fur over himself, and stood atop the minivan, acting as sentinel for Wu Xingyun.

Wu Xingyun found a slightly hidden place, and began to scrub his body. He had his gun next to him. Despite Ye Fan keeping watch, Wu Xingyun still felt wary, alert to his surroundings. Occasionally, their eyes would collide.

Both of them felt embarrassed when this would happen. To defuse the awkwardness, the next time their sights crossed, Ye Fan took the initiative to smile and say: “Mister Soldier, you’re in good shape. You don’t mind if I look twice, do you?”

Wu Xingyun itched to grab Ye Fan and give him a beating. If there was a nasty Night Shard in front of you, you should hit them!

However, after getting dressed, Wu Xingyun’s ‘give a thrashing’ mood dissipated. Hitting a teenager felt improper. Wu Xingyun wasn’t good at bullying, especially when faced with admiring looks.

Sighing to the bottom of his heart, Wu Xingyun climbed back into the cab of the minivan, finding the space inside too small to sit.

""

Ye Fan observed Wu Xingyun for a moment, before opening his mouth to say: “Mister Soldier, do you mind coming to sleep with me? No other meaning, I’m……Well, there’s plenty of room here, and you’ll be more comfortable. Besides, it’s so cold, we’ll be warmer together.”

“Oh.” Hugging his gun, Wu Xingyun got into the back seat area where Ye Fan was.

The vehicle being turned over, the two flattened out the overhead back seats, leaving enough space from them both to semi-recline.

“You sleep, I’ll keep watch.” Wu Xingyun told Ye Fan.

Ye Fan didn’t sleep. Instead, he quietly looked at Wu Xingyun in the light reflected by the snow outside. The soldier must have been left behind, or all his squad died, and he’d come to find his relatives.

In these last days, social systems were rapidly crumbling, and in some places the military had badly collapsed. Ye Fan had encountered several soldiers turned bandits.

Ye Fan had been alone on the endless road, finding only corpses and death, always afraid. When Ye Fan had seen the orderly soldier in the blizzard, watched the soldier take out the fur hide, Ye Fan had immediately had inexpressible feelings of trust and attachment to the soldier. By the soldier’s side, Ye Fan was warm and safe.

Examining the soldier’s profile, it was hard to see clearly. Everything seemed hazy.

Although, in such a small sheltering space, Ye Fan could hear the sound of the soldier’s breathing, feel the heat of the soldier’s body.

His voice very light, Ye Fan said: “I can’t sleep……Why don’t you sleep first? I’ll watch, you’re probably more tired.”

Wu Xingyun didn’t demur and closed his eyes. Unfortunately, his thoughts darted chaotically, and because he’d given the fur to Ye Fan, his body was cold. Now he couldn’t sleep either.

So he opened his eyes again, finding the windows covered with condensation, caused by the two’s combined body temperature.

Stretching out a hand, Wu Xingyun wiped the window and looked out, to hear Ye Fan ask: “Mister Soldier, what’s your name……I can’t always call you Mister Soldier, that’s impolite.”

Wu Xingyun turned his head and smiled: “You know what politeness is?”

Suddenly receiving in the dark night a dazzling smile that showed off white teeth, Ye Fan discovered that the unassuming soldier had many advantages. And the slightly teasing words, paired with that expression, left Ye Fan’s head dazed. For half a second, he couldn’t think of anything at all.

“My name is……Wu……” Wu Xingyun shut his mouth before saying any more. He didn’t know why exactly, he just knew he didn’t want to tell Mozun his real name.

Anyways, Wu Xingyun probably wouldn’t be able to go back to his time. And the two of them wouldn’t stay together long.

There was no Federation and no Demon Army, and peace treaties weren’t required, so……There was no need tell Ye Fan his name.

In this strange time and place, Wu Xingyun thought silently in his heart, the two of them would only be inadvertent passersby. Ye Fan didn’t need to know too much.

Taken aback for a minute, Ye Fan asked: “Then what’s your first name? Oh, here it is!” Ye Fan’s eyes had fallen on Wu Xingyun’s backpack, which read: Wu Yun.

Ye Fan pointed to the name on the pack, and said: “Wu Yun? This is your name? It should be. I watch TV, when soldiers all have the same equipment, they write their names on it to make it easy to identify.”

Wu Xingyun now looked at the name, written in crooked characters. He’d recognized the writing as Mozun’s native language, but hadn’t been able to read it. Now listening to Ye Fan read it out loud, apparently it was very similar to his true name.

Voicing no rebut, Wu Xingyun tacitly approved Ye Fan’s assumption.

“I’ll call you Yun from now on, then.” Ye Fan happily stated. “Are you cold?”

Ye Fan unwrapped one side of the fur, offering Wu Xingyun a little, and said with an embarrassed smile: “This is yours, I……I shouldn’t have taken it all up. But I’m afraid if I catch a cold, I’ll drag you down tomorrow……I see you’re wearing less, and it’s going to be very cold in the middle of the night. How about we use it together?”

Wu Xingyun didn’t move, nor did he object to Ye Fan’s suggestion. He felt the hide on his body, now imbued with Ye Fan’s heat and familiar scent.

After readjusting the fur, Ye Fan continued: “They all say it’s the end of the world……My classmates, my family, a lot of people are dead……If I hadn’t met you, I likely would have died tonight. What do you think? Will it always be like this?”

“I don’t know,” Wu Xingyun replied. “But I think you should be alive, always alive.”

Ye Fan’s mood became low. After a while he finally said: “If I’m the only one alive, it’d be better to have died with them.” Then he laughed. “But I’m not willing to die like this. I haven’t even been in love. I’m still a virgin, I’m not reconciled to dying yet.”

Choked on his own saliva, Wu Xingyun started coughing non-stop. Ye Fan even had to pat him on the back. When Wu Xingyun had finally calmed down, Ye Fan asked: “What about you?”

Wu Xingyun looked at Ye Fan for a long moment. The young man’s face was so close that Wu Xingyun could feel the warm breath.

Eventually Wu Xingyun softly whispered: “I’m married.”
