DPM Chapter 42-Tide Of Rats Part 1
Translated by Snowfall77

Wu Xingyun softly whispered: “I’m married.”

“Oh.” Ye Fan paused, before asking: “Then……You came to find her?”

Wu Xingyun shook his head. “I’ll probably never see them again……Let’s not talk about this, alright?”

Stealthily observing Wu Xingyun, Ye Fan saw Wu Xingyun’s eyes flicker with sadness. Ye Fan figured the wife was probably dead or had ran off with someone else. These days Ye Fan had seen and experienced many calamities, he had no desire to poke at another’s sore spot. Instead, he tactfully changed the subject.

The two of them stayed close together, chatting for a long time. Mostly about the end of the world, but also their previous lives.

Ye Fan’s life had been mundane, no different from any average person. A couple of months ago, when the sun had first disappeared, the Earth sank into its initial panic.

The sun had vanished only for a few seconds before coming back out again, and a multitude of experts had bloviated that everything was still stable.

After his high school graduation, Ye Fan had gone traveling with his parents. The day they’d been going to visit Potala Palace, the sun disappeared for the second time, a total of three times in a day, causing mass hysteria. Ye Fan’s parents tried to take him and return home, however monsters were already surrounding them. Biological life on Earth had mutated so much that, overnight, species who’d never previously competed with humanity gained matchless strength and even intelligence.

The two in the minivan checked the date. The day Wu Xingyun had come to this world was the day Ye Fan’s parents had died.

Terrified and grief-stricken, Ye Fan tried to escape back home, but the temperatures suddenly fell, the sun disappeared yet again, and the mutated monsters decimated a large number of human facilities, even as thermal weapons proved useless against them.

In this way, Ye Fan carried on for ten days, hungry and tired. He’d lost his loved ones and friends, encircled only by corpses and monsters. Finally, on the mountain road, when the overwhelming blizzard had struck, the teenager, who’d only been used to an ordinary life, crumbled, crouching to the ground and crying loudly.

Wu Xingyun had no experience with what Earth’s species were like, so when he heard of fist-sized ants overturning cars, docile puppies as tall as a small building, or sparrows feeding on human brains, his emotions weren’t stirred. He touched the fur over him and listened to Ye Fan’s descriptions. This hide wasn’t from a mutated beast, but from a mastiff from the plateau.

Ye Fan recounted all his experiences, while Wu Xingyun listened without asking much, just quietly looking at the teenager in front of him. It was a gentle, kind, and somewhat sunny young man before Wu Xingyun, very different from the person in his memories.

One little thing was exactly the same. When Ye Fan looked into Wu Xingyun’s eyes, Wu Xingyun didn’t dare meet his gaze.

“What about you? You……Why aren’t you saying anything about yourself?” Ye Fan asked.

“I don’t know what to say,” Wu Xingyun replied.

“What are you going to do now?”

“I don’t know.”

“That……Do you have any relatives?”

Wu Xingyun nodded: “I have parents, and brothers, but……I probably won’t see them again.” As he verbalized it, Wu Xingyun grew depressed. If his parents knew he was dead, how broken-hearted they would be. And his own mother……Wu Xingyun glared at Ye Fan in the dark. This asshole!

Happily ignorant of Wu Xingyun’s thoughts, Ye Fan only saw that the soldier’s mood was gloomy, so Ye Fan extended his hand to hold the other’s.

The soldier’s palm was callused and a little cold. For no reason, Ye Fan felt a pang of distress. The soldier was only a few years older, but had clearly suffered a lot of harm. Otherwise, there wouldn’t be that expression in his eyes.

Ye Fan had an impetuous urge to protect the soldier, although the soldier was much stronger physically and mentally than himself.
Nevertheless, Ye Fan wanted to do his best to help, even if it was only comforting with words.

“Don’t be sad,” Ye Fan said. “I……My parents are gone. Now that we’re together, I can……Hmm, I’ll cook for you, wash your clothes, and I’ll tell you jokes when you’re sad.”

Wu Xingyun didn’t speak. He looked at Ye Fan. Ye Fan’s hand was very warm, his eyes very sincere. Wu Xingyun gently pulled his hand away from Ye Fan’s and whispered: “Sleep. We’ll watch in turns.”

Surprisingly obedient, Ye Fan silently closed his eyes. Soon a slight snoring could be heard, his body heat passing through the fur to Wu Xingyun.

Wu Xingyun remembered his honeymoon with Mozun, when the two of them would sleep out in the wild. That had probably been the best their relationship had been. Yet even then, they hadn’t cuddled and slept together after that first night.

Outside, the snow still dropped, but because of the two people close together, inside the vehicle was warm.

After sleeping about an hour, Ye Fan woke back up, changed position with Wu Xingyun, half-reclining by the window.

Wu Xingyun said: “You didn’t sleep long. Wake me up if you get sleepy again, or if you feel any danger. Otherwise, I’ll switch with you in two hours.”

Ye Fan made an affirmative noise, and Wu Xingyun peacefully fell asleep.

Because someone else was around, it was the most relaxed sleep Wu Xingyun had had since arriving on Earth. His dreams were unprecedently comfortable, and he was nice and warm.

By the time Wu Xingyun opened his eyes, the sky was bright. Ye Fan hadn’t woken Wu Xingyun after two hours, but instead let him sleep well for eight hours.

“I said two hours,” Wu Xingyun grumbled. “Why didn’t you wake me up?”

Ye Fan shrugged. “I’m not sleepy anyways. It was right to let you sleep more. This way you’ll be at fighting strength!”

Ha! Deep in his heart, Wu Xingyun felt indignant. When they inevitably encountered danger, should he let the Night Shard be eaten by a combative monster? Or better yet, just kill the Night Shard himself?

The two of them got out of the minivan, discussing where to go next.

They had almost no food, water, or weapons. They needed to replenish their supplies and get more up-to-date information. Locating nearby cities was their best option.

Finding a map in the vehicle, they managed to basically determine their current location.

They were at the boundary of xxxx.

The nearest county was xxxx. Wu Xingyun thought they could get supplies there, however Ye Fan had no intention of stopping in that place.

“There’s no one anywhere,” Ye Fan said. “I think it’s safer to find someplace larger, with a garrison. Look, down this road, you go through a tunnel. After the tunnel, the altitude isn’t as high, and the plateau will disappear……Here is a county seat. That should be good, I’ve seen it advertised on TV. Maybe you can find some troops to follow, or……At least, maybe some food or weapons. Anyways, if we drive, it’s only one day away.”

Although the veteran Wu Xingyun deemed Ye Fan’s proposal unreliable and more dangerous, in the end Wu Xingyun decided to respect Ye Fan’s opinion.

Wu Xingyun’s reason was simple. Ye Fan would survive. He would become the strongest, would be the Night Shard. So whatever choice Ye Fan made now, even if it seemed stupid, was the correct path proven by history.

Meanwhile, Ye Fan was afraid that Wu Xingyun would abandon him, having no idea that Wu Xingyun had already decided the safest way to deal with the dangerous environment was to follow Ye Fan.

After their discussion, they acted.

Wu Xingyun went to find a large stone, Ye Fan got a long wooden stick, and together they flipped the minivan back over.

Thanks to their good luck, none of the vehicle’s important parts were damaged, and the gasoline hadn’t leaked. With a little repair, it could be driven again.

Wu Xingyun worked on the car, Ye Fan assisting on the side. Finding dead branches, Ye Fan made a fire, roasting pieces of meat. He got an iron bucket out of the minivan’s trunk and melted some snow water. Then he diligently served tea and food. Wu Xingyun’s hands being too dirty, Ye Fan fed him.
