DPM Chapter 43-Nascent Part 3
Translated by Snowfall77

The city was quite small, having only two subdistricts. Yet over by the river bank, Wu Xingyun spotted the conspicuous hospital at a glance.

Carrying Ye Fan to it, Wu Xingyun found that the hospital wasn’t very big, having only five completely deserted floors.

The entire city seemed to be a ghost town. Wu Xingyun easily scoured the entire hospital for medicines, also nabbing five scalpels.

Wu Xingyun didn’t know what would happen in the dead of night. He felt it foolish to stay in an exposed, unguarded hospital, so still carrying Ye Fan, Wu Xingyun went to a military police station.

There was no one inside, same as the hospital, and the barracks weren’t much better.

The station was located to guard a prison, and after exploring, Wu Xingyun decided the sentry’s guard post was the safest place.

To prevent prisoners from attacking or escaping, the guard post had steel fencing, adequate bulbs within, and spotlights sufficient for easy outward observation.

The downside was there were no beds, no radio, and no TV, meaning Wu Xingyun couldn’t listen for up-to-date news.

Going to the barracks below, Wu Xingyun found two quilts. He dismantled a door, turning it into a makeshift bed and putting Ye Fan in it. He also moved a TV, but couldn’t find any cable lines or broadcasting station. Hunting for information would have to wait, Wu Xingyun realized. He didn’t dare leave Ye Fan alone for too long.

Next, Wu Xingyun went to garrison and replenished his ammunition. Then it was time to check Ye Fan’s wounds.

Wu Xingyun had been constantly checking Ye Fan’s vitals along the way, and thus far there’d been no organ failure. Now that they were more secure, Wu Xingyun could start treating Ye Fan.

(Truthfully, Wu Xingyun didn’t want to help Ye Fan with his wounds. What if a monster suddenly jumped out or something? Then they’d both be dead!)

With Ye Fan lying on the wooden bed, Wu Xingyun tried to roll up Ye Fan’s pants, but Ye Fan’s calf was too swollen. In the end, Wu Xingyun had to cut off the one trouser leg.

Ye Fan’s whole leg had turned blackish. On his calf, the rat-bite wound was seeping yellow pus.

Wu Xingyun carefully sliced the wound open, draining the pus and trying to the black blood to disperse, but it seemed useless.

Eventually Wu Xingyun sucked the black blood out with his mouth.

When Wu Xingyun had finished, he disinfected the wound with alcohol, then fed Ye Fan an assortment of anti-inflammatories, fever reducers, and antivirals.

Worried that he’d be infected from Ye Fan’s blood too, Wu Xingyun also took a ton of medicine himself.

Finally, Wu Xingyun put Ye Fan on a IV drip.

Although Ye Fan showed no signs of waking up, his heart pulsed steadily.

When Ye Fan would wake up, if he’d be mentally compromised when he did, Wu Xingyun could only leave it all to fate.

Wu Xingyun believed the medicine should be sufficient for Ye Fan’s injuries. Though the next day Wu Xingyun decided that Ye Fan wasn’t getting enough oxygen. Sealing the guard post, Wu Xingyun hauled an oxygen tank from the hospital for Ye Fan’s use.

There weren’t many mutant creatures in the city, it seemed like the area had already gone through a round of elimination. Wu Xingyun did run across the black cat again. The feline was by the river, eating a strange fish bigger than itself. Obviously, the black cat was a born predator, knowing how to hunt its quarry.

Wu Xingyun offered thanks to the great cat once again, for giving Wu Xingyun the knowledge of the bewildering fish, and that the river shouldn’t be casually approached.

Still, the biggest threats in the city were the great black cat and the rats of the tunnel.

If the cat tired of eating rats, it might return to the city in search of tasty people. Wu Xingyun fretted that the black cat’s skill, acuity, and ambush ability would make it difficult to escape.

Or, the rats’ intelligence evolved even higher. And then they killed the black cat and seized control of the city.

On the fifth day, the sun abruptly disappeared again.

It stayed gone a long time. Calculating the time, Wu Xingyun found the sun hadn’t appeared for thirty-six hours. Meanwhile, a white fog had formed.

The fog had a fishy odor.

Perplexed, Wu Xingyun had no idea if the fog was normal for Earth, or another mutated phenomenon. He could only hope that the still unconscious Ye Fan would wake up soon to answer the question.

After ten days, Wu Xingyun had no idea if it was night or daytime. The sun refused to show, and the white fog periodically rose.

Meanwhile Ye Fan swung between fevers and ice-coldness, as if he were a human pendulum.

When Ye Fan was feverish, Wu Xingyun used cold water to wipe his body. When Ye Fan was cold, Wu Xingyun lied down and held him.

Finally, on the fifteenth day, Ye Fan’s temperature stabilized. Wu Xingyun was sitting on the floor beside Ye Fan, nodding off, when he suddenly heard Ye Fan groan.

Wu Xingyun hurriedly raised his head to see Ye Fan slowly open his eyes.

Reaching out, Wu Xingyun checked Ye Fan’s forehead. The young’s man’s body temperature felt normal.

Breathing a long sigh of relief, Wu Xingyun tiredly flopped on the floor.

Ye Fan’s awakening meant he was on the mend. Now it was Wu Xingyun’s turn to have a proper sleep.

When Ye Fan saw his surroundings clearly, he found Wu Xingyun and himself squeezed together in a tiny room. Ye Fan was in a makeshift bed on a wooden plank, while to the side Wu Xingyun was curled up in an even smaller space. Wu Xingyun had dark circles under his eyes, and his body looked thinner. The noise Ye Fan had heard the split second he’d opened his eyes had been Wu Xingyun falling over.

Leaning close to Wu Xingyun, Ye Fan found the soldier was just sleeping. Ye Fan then lifted the quilt off his own body, discovering that he’d been changed into clean new clothes, from to shirt to underwear.

He couldn’t help gazing at the soldier beside him again. Ye Fan had thought he was doomed to be abandoned, but the soldier had carried him out the rats’ lair.

Then, even after Ye Fan had said: “Good……You go, be careful…… Don’t feel guilty……” The soldier still hadn’t deserted him.

The words: “I’ll come back for you.” Unexpectedly, they hadn’t been comforting lies, but–the truth.

A warm current bubbled up in Ye Fan’s heart. He’d been ready to be discarded and die. Now he’d woken up to find things beyond his expectations.

Lowering his head slightly, Ye Fan forcefully sniffed the air, discovering his sense of smell had significantly sharpened. He could even differentiate the scent of the small soldier beside him.

And—he recalled indistinct impressions.

Someone softly wiping his body clean while he’d been burning within a furnace.

When he’d been in a hell of ice, someone had held him, warming Ye Fan’s body with theirs.

Ye Fan bowed his head and sniffed his body.

Although it’d been many days, and his body had been wiped many times, he could still detect Wu Xingyun’s scent on himself.

Had his sense of smell really become that acute, or was it his heart’s inner illusion?

Ye Fan stood up, and in an instant realized he could also hear a multitude of sounds.

The friction of his hand on the quilt, a leak downstairs, a bird soaring in the sky. Wu Xingyun’s breathing.

He moved softly and quietly to peer out the window.

It was dark, yet he could see further, even further than he ordinarily could during daylight.

Clearly something had happened to his body, but he didn’t understand how or why.

He rolled up his trouser leg, checking where the rat had bitten him, only to find no scars at all.

Instead, his skin seemed more supple and flexible. When he looked over again at the soldier sleeping in the corner, he discovered he could discern the subtle lines of the lips, the root of each eyelash, and even the dust on the lashes.

The rat?

Ye Fan pondered. Because he’d been bitten by a rat, his senses had become abnormally sensitive?

It felt like a new life!

Why the hell was this happening though?

His questions a dense mist he couldn’t penetrate, the one thing Ye Fan was sure of was that the soldier had not abandoned him. Had not left Ye Fan on the side of the road to die. It was the soldier who’d given Ye Fan a new chance!

After carefully climbing over, Ye Fan noted that Wu Xingyun had no covering quilt.

Ye Fan put a blanket over the soldier, now noticing the soldier still had his coat and shoes on.

When Ye Fan attempted to make Wu Xingyun’s sleeping more comfortable, he saw that Wu Xingyun had given Ye Fan the more cushy spot.

Gently lifting the legs, Ye Fan put another arm around Wu Xingyun’s back and picked the soldier up.

In that moment, Wu Xingyun opened his eyes, making Ye Fan worried that he’d disturbed the other’s dreams.

But surprisingly, Wu Xingyun just glanced at Ye Fan before closing his eyes again.

Ye Fan explained: “I’m fine and I can tell you’re tired. So I’ll give you a better place to sleep.”

Wu Xingyun let out a “mmm.”

Moving Wu Xingyun to the bed, Ye Fan took off the soldier’s shoes, socks, and clothes.

While he did it, Ye Fan said to Wu Xingyun: “Help take your clothes off, you’ll sleep better.”

Wu Xingyun gave an incoherent mumble, slightly lifting his waist for Ye Fan.

Ye Fan unbuckled Wu Xingyun’s belt and unbuttoned his pants. When the metal belt buckle slid down low, Ye Fan accidentally touched something he shouldn’t have.

Worried that Wu Xingyun would blame him, Ye Fan was relieved when the soldier only gave him a quick look, saying nothing.

“It wasn’t intentional……I think……We’re both men, it’s no big deal.” Ye Fan hastily excused himself.

“Mm.” Wu Xingyun closed his eyes again.

After taking off all Wu Xingyun’s clothes, Ye Fan covered him with a quilt.

He opened the door, learning he could still hear Wu Xingyun’s breathing.

Taking more steps out with the clothes, the sounds of Wu Xingyun’s breathing grew weaker. Yet Ye Fan could hear it.

As he walked from the guard post, Ye Fan found that if he concentrated, he could even detect ants crawling on the ground.

Finding a basin and a water tap, Ye Fan began washing Wu Xingyun’s clothes.

Under the splash of the water, Ye Fan heard Wu Xingyun turning over, heard Wu Xingyun’s slight snores.

His hands rubbing the cloth, Ye Fan felt that this was a most reassuring day.

What Does It Mean When You Are Bleeding Black Blood?

By Staff WriterLast Updated Mar 31, 2020 2:23:06 PM ET

If blood appears black or dark red, it means the blood has a low oxygen level, notes Dr. Anne Marie Helmenstine for About.com. Bleeding blood of this color by itself is not a cause for alarm since all blood in the veins has relatively low oxygen.

Significantly dark blood may be a sign the blood is no longer in circulation or the blood is in the periphery veins of the body. Blood turns a dark red or even black-looking color when it is deoxygenated, according to Dr. Helmenstine. Humans of both genders may experience dark-colored bleeding when a wound draws blood from a vein. Blood from veins contains the least amount of oxygen of any blood in the body, especially in areas like fingers and toes. It is not uncommon for a person to prick a finger or a mole and see thick dark blood.

IV Drip

Intravenous therapy (IV) is therapy that delivers fluids directly into a vein. The intravenous route of administration can be used both for injections, using a syringe at higher pressures; as well as for infusions, typically using only the pressure supplied by gravity. Intravenous infusions are commonly referred to as drips.

The intravenous route is the fastest way to deliver medications and fluid replacement throughout the body, because they are introduced directly into the circulation. Intravenous therapy may be used for fluid volume replacement, to correct electrolyte imbalances, to deliver medications, and for blood transfusions.
