DPM Chapter 43-Nascent Part 1
Translated by Snowfall77

Wu Xingyun and Ye Fan had inadvertently stumbled into the rats’ lair……

They couldn’t go towards the rats. That meant being engulfed by the horde.

The only way out was the gap in the wall of corpses.

Slowly raising his gun, Wu Xingyun whispered to Ye Fan: “Go through!”

In an instant Ye Fan’s face turned deathly pale.

Both of them could see that the rats were returning to their nest, not scavenging for food.

At least Wu Xingyun and Ye Fan were in the dark, their scent polluted with the encompassing odors. Hopefully, the rats wouldn’t immediately detect them.

Maybe the rats had eaten their fill, with no need to hunt right now.

Whatever the case, if the two of them stayed put much longer, the end result would be them becoming part of the rats’ ‘wall.’

“Hurry up!” Wu Xingyun breathed to Ye Fan.

Ye Fan drilled towards the gap, thinking that he preferred the minivan to this.

The space was very narrow. Ye Fan had to stoop down to get in. When he’d fully entered, he found a passage about three meters long.

A fallen rail was to thank for the tunnel. When the rats had discarded bodies, the corpses had been obstructed by the rail, forming a small space.

Stepping carefully, Ye Fan tried to not make any sound. Skulls grazed his body. Bloody hands dangled over him, caressing his face.

It took Ye Fan three seconds to get out the other side of the gap, and just as he had, he heard a loud bang.

Wu Xingyun had shot his rifle. He’d maneuvered backwards into the passage, however a few rats had still found him and followed.

One of the rodents tried to attack, leaving Wu Xingyun no choice but to shoot.

Plague was a most terrible thing. If Wu Xingyun got bitten by this kind of rat, he’d lose his small life here.

His marksmanship accurate, Wu Xingyun’s shot got the rat. The fat creature rolled twice on the ground, limbs twitching, then stilled.

Now the crack of the gunfire had alarmed the other rats. More rats began to notice Wu Xingyun, trying to get at him.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

The sound of the rifle was deafening.

Still, Wu Xingyun only had so many bullets. He couldn’t shoot the whole horde.

When he exited the narrow passage, he had less than ten bullets left, while more and more rats were coming.

Unable to shoot casually anymore, Wu Xingyun pulled out a scraped dagger, chopping in half another rat trying to bite him.

The lethality was too limited however. One rat died, and ten more rats came.

Rats with intelligence, they knew the meaning of revenge……

At first, it’d only been about a dozen rats following Wu Xingyun out the gap, yet a dozen became hundreds, and hundreds became thousands.

The rats, resembling commanded troops, rushed towards Wu Xingyun, like a river crushing over a dam.

“Run!” Wu Xingyun pulled Ye Fan, racing towards the other end of the tunnel.

The goal was three hundred meters away. Thanks to his year-round training, Wu Xingyun’s speed was fast. Ye Fan couldn’t match the pace, falling to the ground.

Wu Xingyun reached out a hand at once, dragging at Ye Fan. Not quickly enough though. A rat had already bitten Ye Fan’s ankle.

Wu Xingyun stomped the rat’s body.

The rat’s intestines burst out like rotted fruit, yet the teeth stayed tightly clenched onto Ye Fan.

Yanking Ye Fan up, Wu Xingyun grimly watched hundreds of more rats swarming through the gap, following, getting closer and closer.

Not letting go, Wu Xingyun kept lugging Ye Fan to run, however Ye Fan’s whole leg felt numb. He couldn’t jump fast enough to keep up with Wu Xingyun, and he too saw the rats rapidly converging.

Ye Fan pushed at Wu Xingyun: “Mister Yun, run by yourself!”

Staggered by Ye Fan, Wu Xingyun turned his head, to find that the nastily difficult dead rat had also bitten Ye Fan’s calf, turning the entire leg stiff. Ye Fan couldn’t even walk.

Not saying a word, Wu Xingyun put Ye Fan on his back, and continued running out of the tunnel.

While doing that, Wu Xingyun also shot another rat who tried to pounce on him.

Although Ye Fan had urged Wu Xingyun to make an escape without himself, now that he was on Wu Xingyun’s back, he clung tightly to Wu Xingyun’s neck, trying to be cooperative instead of contrary.

Sprinting fast, a person on his back couldn’t slow Wu Xingyun down. After all, he’d never slacked off on his weight-bearing exercises.

Even without the help of boosters, Wu Xingyun made it out of the tunnel in thirty seconds.

The rats no longer followed, instead carefully halting at the mouth of the tunnel, having the consciousness of remaining within their bounds.

Wu Xingyun stood outside just outside the tunnel, Ye Fan on his back. Looking back, Wu Xingyun observed the rats’ halt, giving the soldier a vague inner hunch.

Rats were sharp creatures. Supposedly their intuition was exceptionally strong.

The way they had stopped at the edge of the tunnel suggested that there were more dreadful creatures awaiting.

Counting his bullets, Wu Xingyun found he’d used up most of them dealing with the rats. There were only two left.

Ye Fan still on his back, Wu Xingyun cocked his head to look at the youngster. Ye Fan’s head drooped down on Wu Xingyun’s shoulder, his eyes glazed.

Plague. The scariest thing. An infection from an ordinary rat could be lethal. How much more from a mutated one?

Wu Xingyun asked in a low voice: “How are you?”

Ye Fan groaned, his body blazing heat.

Walking a little further, Wu Xingyun knew he’d couldn’t keep carrying Ye Fan this way. Otherwise they’d both die.

Wu Xingyun had to make a choice.

Rats are various medium-sized, long-tailed rodents. Species of rats are found throughout the order Rodentia, but stereotypical rats are found in the genus Rattus. Other rat genera include Neotoma (pack rats), Bandicota (bandicoot rats) and Dipodomys (kangaroo rats).
Rats are typically distinguished from mice by their size. Generally, when someone discovers a large muroid rodent, its common name includes the term rat, while if it is smaller, its name includes the term mouse. The common terms rat and mouse are not taxonomically specific.
