DPM Chapter 44-Sprucing Up Part 1
Translated by Snowfall77

After Ye Fan washed the clothes, he went in search of a room more suitable for the two of them to rest in.

The barracks clearly wouldn’t work. Too big, too open, and with too many unguarded windows.

Instead, Ye Fan chose a room that looked like officer accommodations. It had two beds, a small TV, and a stereo.

In the outer room, Ye Fan found a blood-stained table with its glass top shattered, pictures still underneath.

The squad of less than forty might been attacked by something, Ye Fan speculated. Or they had gone out on a mission and never returned.

The blood here wasn’t necessarily human.

Ye Fan put the place in order, then went to take a look at the squad’s arsenal.

There were no particularly special weapons, just a couple of rifles with bayonets, and one pistol.

Figuring the rifles were conspicuous and unwieldly, Ye Fan took the pistol.

It was a Type 77 pistol. Commonly used by military and police, it had a range of fifty meters, a clip of containing seven rounds, and was able to fire thirty rounds in a minute.

Nevermind that Ye Fan had no experience with firearms, and was a complete amateur, knowing nothing about the gun’s performance and mechanisms. When he found that it could only load seven rounds at a time, he was disappointed. But it was better than nothing.

""

Taking the pistol and ammunition back to the sentry post, Ye Fan waited for Wu Xingyun to awaken.

Wu Xingyun slept for about six hours. When he woke up, it was still dark and the sickly smelling white fog had materialized again.

Ye Fan considered the unusual mist, calculating the calendar. It should be August, the hottest month of summer, yet he didn’t feel any warmth. Instead, he was cold in just his shirt, and adding a coat only barely fended off the chill.

Sniffing the air mightily, Ye Fan said: “Mister Yun, what’s going on with this fog? Why is it like this?”

So the fog wasn’t normal, thought Wu Xingyun. He shook his head, saying: “I don’t know. Hey, you got a gun?”

Ye Fan nodded. “I went looking in the arsenal downstairs. I picked this because it’s small and easy to carry.”

Taking the pistol, Wu Xingyun looked it over disapprovingly: “This won’t do. The range is too short, and it only has seven rounds, you……You probably won’t be able to hit anything.”

Ye Fan bowed his head in embarrassment, before immediately popping it back up: “You……You could teach me how to use a gun, right?”

Wu Xingyun didn’t respond, reflecting in his heart. If Wu Xingyun helped the Night Demon became a first-rate shooter……Didn’t that just make Wu Xingyun a great enemy of the Federation?

Deciding to take a roundabout approach, Wu Xingyun finally replied: “How about we find a place to communicate with the outside world, find out what’s happening?”

Ye Fan had no objections. The two tidied up the sentry post and moved the bedding to the room Ye Fan had selected. Passing the yard, Wu Xingyun saw the clothes hanging on a line, and glanced back inquiringly at Ye Fan.

“I washed them carefully, they’re all clean,” Ye Fan told Wu Xingyun.

Wu Xingyun felt a little smug, having his clothes washed by the great Night Shard. If such news was reported to Shi Fei, the Marshal would certainly praise Wu Xingyun for a mission well done.

Thinking of Shi Fei, Wen Nuo, and others, Wu Xingyun’s mood sank. He didn’t have long to wallow though, because the location of the room Ye Fan had chosen was completely terrible.

Trying to be kind, Wu Xingyun noted: “It’s more comfortable here, but it’s not going to be easy to guard……”

Ye Fan gave Wu Xingyun a mysterious smile, then told the soldier all the physical changes that had taken place after the rat bite.

They both got a little excited. If Ye Fan’s increased perceptions were that good, they now had a natural radar system. No more being nervous day and night, guarding against monster attacks.

Wu Xingyun tested Ye Fan’s perception capability for a while, wanting to be sure.

Putting his hand behind his back, Wu Xingyun had Ye Fan guess how many fingers Wu Xingyun was holding up, and Ye Fan got it right nine times out of ten.

“You……Can actually tell?! So what’s the range of your awareness?”

Testing some more, Ye Fan’s range proved to be about fifty meters. Far less than the five hundred meters his future perverted self would attain.

After the thorough test of Ye Fan’s abilities, the signal on the TV finally connected. The two sat side by side in a chair, watching the news.

Broadcast news is eternal, forever scattering its sound bites into the atmosphere. Every report was about the end of the world. Experts pontificated on the strange phenomena, claiming that mutations occurring were due to an alien virus from outer space, and the advent of the white fog was a self-protecting mechanism from Earth’s environment. Moreover, everyone should believe that these phenomenon were only temporary. Eventually, everything would be fine.

Wu Xingyun thought the experts were talking bullshit. He’d traveled to many places in the Milky Way, and he’d never encountered any kind of alien-spread, outer space virus that mutated things overnight! The degree of variation happening overnight must have been accomplished by a Federation genetics company.

Ye Fan also found the news specious, the two of them in unprecedented harmony with each other.

“They’re not making any sense,” Ye Fan said, “Why don’t you teach me to shoot? We can start with the pistol?”

As he was talking, he reached out to turn off the TV, but right then an important bulletin came on.

An Academy of Sciences member in the provincial capital came out and said that City C was well equipped. Able to resist all kinds of mutations, they were offering protection. Anyone was welcome to come and seek shelter.

Turning his head, Wu Xingyun looked at a map hanging on the wall. According to it, they were about a three hour drive away from City C, the province capital.

Wu Xingyun only had general knowledge of this time in history. He knew that the last of the mutations were truly terrible. And that people scattered in suburbs or small towns were killed. In the end, incapable of contending against the mutations, humanity had deployed nuclear weapons.

It wasn’t that Wu Xingyun was particularly worried about mutant species. With Ye Fan’s new abilities, they’d be able to avoid many dangers. No, it was the upcoming global nuclear explosion that worried Wu Xingyun.

If they stayed in a small city, evading the nuclear explosion would be impossible.

In a well-equipped bigger city, there should be underground bomb shelters and comprehensive facilities.

Wu Xingyun decided he’d take Ye Fan to City C. Once there, whether they should part ways or continue together……Wu Xingyun put it out of his mind.

Ye Fan was still staring at the TV. A moment ago the expert had been replaced by a scientist who was excitedly and cheerfully expounding his views on the end times.

The grizzled scientist was a biologist, enthusiastically stating his belief that there was a deep-seated cause behind the global mutations. And the public should be prepared to adapt to the new environment.

Pointing at the TV, Ye Fan declared: “I know him! It’s Uncle Luo!”

Wu Xingyun looked at the man on the screen and asked: “You know him?”

Ye Fan nodded: “He used to work with my father. They both taught at university together. Though he transferred somewhere else later. Who knew he’d be such a strong survivor?!”

“Do you know him well? If you’re close, we can go to him for help.” Wu Xingyun spoke hopefully. “He could assist us in the future.”

A scientist, strong and on the TV. Wu Xingyun was convinced this Uncle Luo would probably become a founder of the Federation.
