DPM Chapter 46-The First Time Part 3
Translated by Snowfall77

Someone close to Ye Fan started shrieking. When Ye Fan turned his head, he saw a man not three meters away stumbling to the ground and being stomped upon.

Ye Fan wanted to go help, but couldn’t reach the fallen man, barely staying upright himself.

He was only watch helplessly as the man was continuously trampled, blood trickling from his slack mouth.

No one knew better than Ye Fan what dangers lay outside the city. And there might be danger in the city also, yet this surging tide of panic-stricken people stampeding through the tunnel seemed the most imminent threat. Ye Fan renewed his efforts to escape the throng.

He was trod on indiscriminately too. Had it been a woman? His foot throbbed painfully, from what had felt like a high-heeled shoe.

Then someone shouted abuse at him.

Who was crying so loudly?

A sturdy man shoved at Ye Fan, bellowing: “Move your ass!” While a random girl screeched: “Who touched my butt?!”

More blood-curdling screams rang out. Ye Fan felt the ground indistinctly vibrating, his intuition telling him something big was coming.

The narrow passage was beginning reek of blood. Bowing his head, Ye Fan discovered he’d trod on someone too, a pair of unwavering dead eyes staring up at him.

Hardening his resolve, Ye Fan looked back up. He’d been separated from Wu Xingyun and couldn’t see the soldier.

The realization panicked Ye Fan, while a spat escalated nearby.

“Get out of the way! You block me, I’ll stab you to death!”

Ye Fan turned his head to see a young man shoving an elderly man to ground, then availing himself of the little extra space, squeezing past.

Turning his head again, Ye Fan now saw two bald-headed, tattooed men with knives blocking part of the road, slashing at people and shouting: “Here comes the monster! You’ll die if you don’t run! Don’t get in my way!”

Then, Ye Fan was inexplicably slapped in the face.

Looking down, he saw a girl.

“I’m sorry……” Ye Fan apologized, even though he had no idea why he’d incurred her anger.

The next second, he got a fist to the nose.

A big, strong man next to the girl gave Ye Fan the punch, pushing Ye Fan down.

Someone stomped on Ye Fan’s body. More than one. Incessantly.

Ye Fan tried to struggle back up, but it was useless, people kept treading on him.

Remembering what Wu Xingyun had taught him, Ye Fan contracted his muscles tightly, involuntarily feeling his pants pocket.

When he saw a leather boot headed for his face, Ye Fan opened fire.

Loud bangs rang out.

The boot owner collapsed. How many shots were fired? Ye Fan had been stepped on by more than a dozen people. Now two or three bodies fell down beside him.

Finally gaining enough space, Ye Fan climbed up off the ground. Those who’d been attacking him were fallen, making wretched shrieks, quickly swarmed over by the rapid tide of people.

Advancing to the place where Wu Xingyun had exited, Ye Fan was trembling head to foot , blood covering the corner of his mouth and face.

The encompassing cries, the cursing, the dangerously deafening sounds looming from outside, the slight tremors underneath, Ye Fan was numb to all of it. There was only one thought in his head—I killed……And……Killed more than one……

He was pushed, but he pushed harder. Only now did he discover his great strength. These weak women and children, even the sturdy men, they were not his opponents.

Fewer and fewer people were in front of him, even though more were still being trampled around him. However, Ye Fan was holding a gun that could fire at any time.

At last, he sensed open space before him.

He finally squeezed out of the crowd. He’d escaped the blood-drenched passage.

Raising his head, eyes searching, Ye Fan caught sight of the person he wanted to see.

Wu Xingyun simultaneously spotted the blood-soaked Ye Fan.

After Wu Xingyun had been pulled apart from Ye Fan by the crowd, he’d waited at the exit. He listened to the screams, observed the blood trickling out. He could guess what had happened inside.

He wanted to go back in and find Ye Fan, but too many people made it impossible.

Wu Xingyun could only wait.

He heard the echo of gunshots inside, more than one.

The sound seeming to come from different areas.

More screams, the smell of blood spreading, when Wu Xingyun finally saw Ye Fan come out.

Ye Fan’s hair was mussed, a gun in his hand, bloodstains and the outline of footprints on his body.

Ash covered his face, his mouth bloodied, the eyes apathetically grim.

If anyone pushed him, he would push with greater strength.

If anyone hit him, he would punch without the slightest hesitation.

The hand holding the gun had blood on it, though he seemed not to realize what he’d done.

He’d left the crowd and no one dared approach him.

Only Wu Xingyun. Worriedly asking: “Are you all right?”

Staring in Wu Xingyun in a daze, Ye Fan’s cold expression didn’t change, but his voice quivered: “I……Killed……”

Wu Xingyun took his hand, trying to pull Ye Fan completely away from everyone else.

Ye Fan followed, staggering. They turned a corner and stopped.

The ground was still faintly shaking, Ye Fan’s gaze blankly fixed ahead.

“I……The blood on my hands, it’s someone else’s……” His hands were repeatedly clenching and unclenching.

Wu Xingyun took the pinkie finger out of his bag, handing it to Ye Fan: “You’d already done it……”

Ye Fan looked at the finger in his palm in disbelief. Then he closed his hands tightly and braced his forehead.

His whole body was shivering: “I……I killed someone else for my own life……I walked on someone else’s corpse, so I wouldn’t be trampled……”

He bit his lips fiercely, wanted the taste of his own blood. Now that he was temporarily out of danger, recalling what he’d done, his stomach heaved, and he almost vomited. He felt so weak he couldn’t stand up.

Before today, he’d never expected he’d become such a person.

Although the last days had already come, Ye Fan experienced the horror anew.

It wasn’t just the mutations of nature. It was the turning of oneself into something else, someone unknown.

Ye Fan couldn’t hold it any longer. He threw up, gulping at air.

Wu Xingyun didn’t know how to comfort Ye Fan, he’d never encountered a situation like this. Wu Xingyun could still smell the reek of blood coming from the tunnel entrance. He’d lived through cruel battlefields before, and his adaptability was stronger. But even so, he felt a wave of nausea.

Wu Xingyun’s first killing, it had been a full month before he’d recovered. So what about Ye Fan now?

Gently reaching out, Wu Xingyun held Ye Fan’s hand in his own. After a while, he said: “Just get used to it. You…… should get used to it soon.”
