DPM Chapter 46-The First Time Part 1
Translated by Snowfall77

The rats had evolved. And tonight, with their higher intelligence, they’d killed the cat.

Next they’d take the city.

Wu Xingyun gave the steering wheel to Ye Fan. They needed to drive quickly, but in the surrounding white fog, Wu Xingyun couldn’t see anything, making it impossible for him to drive.

Ye Fan had just turned eighteen years old, barely driving age, yet he’d graduated from ‘Wu Xingyun Driving School.’

Meaning Ye Fan’s driving skills were even worse than Wu Xingyun’s.

Although Ye Fan could sense the road conditions, he continuously hit unseen things along the way.

In the back seat, Wu Xingyun had his gun ready, staring behind them.

It was dark, the taillights illumined very little, and the white fog was unrelenting.

If a rat appeared in Wu Xingyun’s line of vision, and he couldn’t kill it with one shot, Ye Fan and himself would likely be sunk under the rat tide.

Something suddenly sprang out of the darkness. Wu Xingyun shot it before even registering what it was.

There came a loud howl. It had been a dog.

Ye Fan kept the car speeding forward, as the dog’s agonized yelps rose in that split second. They could hear the crunching sound of its bitten bones.

Boom! Ye Fan ran the car into a tree.

He tried to reverse at once, but something had already caught up to them. Wu Xingyun still couldn’t discern anything clearly, shooting purely on instinct.

They both could feel more and more malice gathering in around them, an intention to encircle them weighing in the air, intimate rustling and squeaking drowning out all other noises.

Who knew how many rats there were……Wu Xingyun understood the terrifying and perverse rate at which rats could reproduce.

This group could already be several times more than when they’d first encountered each other. If Ye Fan and himself were hemmed in, the consequences were unthinkable.

Boom! Ye Fan finally got the car restarted, crushing the rat in front of them, the whole car undulating from the impact.

The stench of blood filled their nostrils. The car was repeatedly ramming into flesh, the front windshield stained red. The wipers failed, and since Ye Fan couldn’t see anyways, he closed his eyes, relying on his heightened senses.

Wu Xingyun was responsible for the rats chasing behind.

He persevered, shooting at shadows, Ye Fan driving faster and faster. Gradually, the rancid squeaks fell out of hearing.

The last building faded into their rearview. They had departed the small town.

Wu Xingyun was convinced the rats would completely occupy the town. Moreover, given their reproduction rate, the rats could become limitless. In a short span, they’d only be even more dreadful.

Ten minutes after they’d escaped, the sun finally showed its face.

It had been a month since it’d last disappeared.

The feeble light shone through the white fog, everything appearing surreal, the atmosphere refracting hallucinatory colors. As the sun leapt high, the light grew stronger, and the white fog slowly dispersed.

The world exposed its original appearance.

Looking backwards, Wu Xingyun saw no pursuing rats.

Breathing a sigh of relief, he almost collapsed in the back seat.

Besides ambushing the Night Shard, leaving the town was the most high-stress shooting Wu Xingyun had ever done.

And as a Ghost soldier, he’d had an array of high-tech instruments, a calm heart, and most importantly……the Night Shard could possibly be reasoned with. A miscalculation didn’t necessarily mean instant death.

However, this had been Wu Xingyun’s first time being confronted with such pitch dark circumstances—a rather awful driver, only able to shoot blindly, and facing a feral entity that devoured indiscriminately.

His stomach churning, Wu Xingyun could feel the sweat dripping down his back.

Thanks to the sun, the temperature had warmed up a bit. Wu Xingyun stripped down to his T-shirt.

He climbed back into the front passenger seat. Sitting beside Ye Fan, Wu Xingyun saw the young man was also sweating profusely, and still driving with his eyes closed, relying entirely on his perceptual abilities.

The front and back windows of the car were stained with blood, especially the front glass, making it impossible to see the road ahead.
Not until Wu Xingyun told him he could stop, did Ye Fan open his eyes and halt the car.

They got out of the car. Ye Fan, feeling the summer warmth, took off his coat and sweater, leaving on only a short-sleeved shirt soaked with perspiration.

Using water they had in the car, they cleaned the car windows, Though, not wanting to waste too much water, they left the rest of the vehicle’s outside as was.

Ye Fan walked around the car, checking it, even stooping down to look at the underside. When Wu Xingyun asked him what he was doing, Ye Fan said: “I’m certain I hit something……Along the way, I hit it more than once……I tried to avoid it, but it was too fast. I don’t know what it was. There’s nothing left here on the car.”

Wu Xingyun saw a small finger stuck in the wheel hubcap near his feet.

It was a human finger.

Squatting, Wu Xingyun hid the finger in his bag, telling Ye Fan: “Don’t worry, I bet it was some wild dog, or a mutant monster. Something like that.”

“Oh?” Ye Fan felt unsettled in his heart, yet he didn’t dare turn the car around and go back to confirm.

Wu Xingyun got behind the wheel. Now that there was enough light, he was up to driving.

Starting the car again, Wu Xingyun had no intention of telling Ye Fan about the finger. Based on the lividity of the finger, Wu Xingyun could tell when the person had been hit.

That person, even if they hadn’t died from the impact, had become food for the rats.

For the first time, Wu Xingyun realized that he’d unknowingly learned how handle such things. The distraught little soldier who’d hid in his room after his first kill had faded from existence.

He continued driving forward. They passed through one final tunnel, much safer than the last, and when they emerged they saw the city, heading for it with high speed.

It’d only take them about an hour to get into the city. Maybe they’d have to pass some inspections, but Wu Xingyun believed they’d reach their destination safely.

Both of them in a relatively relaxed mood, Wu Xingyun turned on the car radio.

Soothing music resonated from the speakers, other cars occasionally passing them on the highway. The sun shone as it should, the trees on the side of the road looking particularly robust.

Giving them the illusion that everything was normal.

This probably isn’t a question you’ve asked yourself lately, but perhaps that should change.

How many descendants could a pair of rats produce in three years?

The answer: nearly half a billion. That shudder-worthy fact comes courtesy of pest control experts Rentokil, who put together an interactive projected labeled “The Rise of The Rats” to visually show just how crazy this cycle can be if left unchecked.

“If we were to do nothing we would be overrun by rats,” says Dr. Andy Brigham, general technical manager, Science and Service, Rentokil Initial. “Their breeding strategy is very different to that of humans. It is characterized by quantity over quality. They produce very large numbers of offspring on the basis that at least some will survive long enough to produce their own litters.”

Adult rats can breed throughout the year in favorable conditions, producing an average of 8 new babies with each litter. Therefore, over the course of just a few months, two or three sexually mature rats can quickly grow into a serious infestation.

Understanding more about the reproductive habits of rats is key for their effective control. By removing the resources they need you can put the brakes on breeding, reducing the number of new rats in your house while you work on eliminating the adults.
Rat reproduction basics

Adult male rats reach sexual maturity at 10-12 weeks of age, whereas female rats can reproduce as early as 8-9 weeks of age. Their total reproductive lifespan is 12-15 months, during which time they can breed continuously. Babies are weaned within 21-23 days.
How fast do rats reproduce?

Although rats can breed continuously in favorable conditions (with ready access to food and water), most female rats produce an average of 5 litters per year. Each litter contains an average of 8 babies, so a typical female rat will give birth to 40 young over the course of 12 months.

The average gestation period is 21-23 days, and adult female rats can get pregnant within 48 hours of giving birth.
Rat reproduction rates are high thanks to their short gestation periods, the speed with which they reach sexual maturity and their ability to conceive again almost immediately after giving birth. This means that, once a few rats settle in, they can form a full-blown infestation in no time.
