DPM Chapter 46-The First Time Part 2
Translated by Snowfall77

Quickly arriving at a toll booth, its staff member was the first living person they’d met in a long time.

Ye Fan almost squawked at the wire net jutting up from the pavement, complete with iron thorns.

The staff member explained it was to ward off mutant monsters, and that the netting was connected to high-voltage currents, to prevent cars from being preyed upon.

Not only that, the toll booth personnel also told them that City C was clean and tidy. Every day troops went out to hunt and distribute food to the citizens. The city was well-managed and safe, considered to one of the best in the country.

Once they were given temporary entry cards, Wu Xingyun and Ye Fan continued driving, passing through occasional arcs of barbed wire.

Wu Xingyun’s brows creased. “It’s dangerous……There should be quarantine measures. What if we were infected?”

“They probably haven’t had enough time to build isolation facilities,” Ye Fan replied, “After all……It’s been less than two months since this all happened. Look, over there, they’re making something.”

Looking in the direction Ye Fan was pointing, Wu Xingyun saw ongoing construction far off.

Electricized construction was also dangerous, thought Wu Xingyun.

They hadn’t seen the new city up close yet, let alone entered it. Still, even as the whole world was in crisis, City C had quickly adapted and defended, giving its citizens at least momentary peace of mind.

Inwardly glad, Wu Xingyun felt he’d come to the right place.

His relief lasted not even a minute though, when Ye Fan suddenly bounced in his seat, yelling: “Yun! Turn around!”

Wu Xingyun craned his neck and found he had a car behind him. Turning around wasn’t an option.

Taking in Ye Fan’s nervous expression, Wu Xingyun asked: “What’s ahead?”

Ye Fan bowed his head, reaching out with his senses, then he smiled: “It’s people. They scared me, I thought it was something else!”

There would naturally be a lot more people as they arrived at the city. Wu Xingyun exhaled deeply, continuing to drive, as the cars in front and behind them gradually piled up.

Finally, Wu Xingyun saw that the car in front of them was at a complete standstill, as if……There was a traffic jam.

Wu Xingyun stopped the car and turned his head to ask Ye Fan: “In front of us……There’s nothing, right?”

“Well, I’m sure there’s no monsters ahead.” Ye Fan nodded his head with certainty.

Nevertheless, feeling a little uneasy, Wu Xingyun locked the car doors, took out his rifle, and handed Ye Fan the pistol.

“If you’re in danger, shoot.” Wu Xingyun started giving Ye Fan general instruction on how to use the pistol.

But before Wu Xingyun could finish, he heard noises.

Crying, shouting, cursing, and cacophonous discussions.

The sounds of crowded places.

Wu Xingyun opened the sunroof of the car, stretching half his body out to scan the area.

In the distance, he spotted a large group of people at the mouth of the road where it met a tunnel.

Some had backpacks on, others were holding children, their faces panicked and frightened. And they were pouring onto the road.

They didn’t look like that much. No wonder they hadn’t attracted Ye Fan’s attention. However……If all these people crammed onto the highway, it became a lot.

Now registering the scene before him, Ye Fan said: “There’s probably an accident in front of us. Do we go back?”

Glancing back, Wu Xingyun saw the cars behind them were already jam-packed. They were thoroughly blocked in.

It would take more than half an hour to get on a road going elsewhere, and walking would be even slower.

More importantly, retreating meant possibly facing the rats again.

Wu Xingyun made a decision. “Let’s take our things, leave the car, and find a more open place. This road is rigged with high-voltage networks. If something were to happen, it’s too dangerous.”

Ye Fan packed their belongings into the backpack and got out of the car.

While Wu Xingyun and Ye Fan were leaving their car, more and more people were crowding around, as others got out of their car too, asking: “What’s happening? Why is it blocked all of a sudden?”

Not having the answers, Wu Xingyun pulled Ye Fan forward into the stream of people, Ye Fan accidently bumping into a middle-aged woman.
He extended a hand to help her up, repeatedly saying he was sorry, only to get roundly cursed at.

More and more people appeared, completely cramming the tunnel. Wu Xingyun tried to ask people in front of him what had happened, but he was ignored. People from inside the city were desperately rushing out. Trying to enter the city was like a being a tiny boat in whitewater, you had to break through the spraying waves to move forward.

Unable to attend to Ye Fan, Wu Xingyun could only, with great difficulty, squeeze out of the crowd to a slightly more open space.
Craning his neck, he was able to see the entrance to the road. Yet he was surrounded by the roiling pressure of a hysteric crowd, everyone frantically pushing out towards the blocked road.

Wu Xingyun shouted with all his strength: “Ye Fan? Ye Fan!”

Ye Fan didn’t hear Wu Xingyun’s call. Jumbled in amongst the crowd, he stepped on a little girl. He helped her up, returned her to her parents, but was almost trampled to the ground.

He used more strength to exert himself, trying to reach Wu Xingyun, as an unknown voice from the entrance abruptly screamed: “The monster’s coming this way!”

The crowd grew even more crazy, swearing and crying, an endless fracas of people wildly trying to flee. They didn’t care how congested the road was, they simply wanted to get outside the city.
