DPM Chapter 47 Part 1
Translated by Snowfall77

Gently reaching out, Wu Xingyun held Ye Fan’s hand in his own. After a while, he said: “Just get used to it. You…… should get used to it soon.”

Ye Fan clenched onto Wu Xingyun’s hand tightly, as if it were the only lifeline in a vast ocean.

Boom! The ground shook again, an immense wave crashing, toppling everyone who hadn’t had time to enter the highway tunnel.

In that instant , Wu Xingyun threw himself on Ye Fan, and they went down together.

Dust, fragments of cement, broken steel bars flew in the air, skimmed over the heads of the two men, then fell heavily to the ground, layer after layer.

The smoke and dust irritated Wu Xingyun’s lungs. Ye Fan kept coughing.

After the smoke cleared, the two raised their heads in unison.

Unable to protect themselves, many of the people outside the tunnel were lying prone, battered by random debris.

In front of Wu Xingyun and Ye Fan, in the city square about a kilometer away, was entrenched an enormous lizard.

About ten meters high, the monitor lizard’s movements were quick and sharp. Sometimes it hid in the jungle of reinforced concrete, sometimes it’d jump out, ripping apart anything that tried to attack it.

Surrounding the lizard was fighter jets, tanks, and countless soldiers, all dispatched by the southwest military district.

Bullets advanced towards the monitor lizard, but couldn’t penetrate the tough epidermis, sticking in its scales, making the outer skin a steel fortress, enhancing its resistance.

Sticking out its tongue as necessary, the nimble appendage cut across the sky like a bolt of lightning, or a red dragon, striking a fighter jet and easily destroying it.

Realizing ordinary weapon strikes were ineffective, the tremendous wave from just moments ago had been the military deploying a missile.

Boom! Shot by another guided missile, the lizard’s skin and muscle split open from the explosion. From the huge hole in its chest, bloody flesh splattered across the square.

The monstrous monitor lizard stood still for half a second, then slowly fell. Its gigantic body crushed countless buildings, sending tremors through the ground.

Those who’d been fleeing for their lives stopped, simultaneously turning back to watch. When the lizard died, they broke out into cheers.

Risen from the ground, Ye Fan also shouted loudly. However, the sound in his throat quickly died, his expression turning grave.

His perception was more sensitive than others. He was the first to divine the nasty situation.

Though everyone felt it quickly enough. The shaking of the ground hadn’t ceased when the lizard carcass had landed. Instead, it grew larger and larger. Now, one, two, about ten giant monitor lizards poked their heads out of the wasteland of city buildings.

The crowd descended into panic again. Even the military commander lost his head.

They’d just gone to great cost, losing almost half of their fighters and the vast majority of their artillery shells, to get rid of one giant lizard. But now……

One fell. And ten stood up.

Wu Xingyun muttered: “Hell……There’s so many.”

Turning his head and grasping Wu Xingyun’s hand again, Ye Fan’s palms were a little sweaty, because—with his capabilities, he sensed the truth.

“Yun……Yun……” Ye Fan’s voice was hushed, “There’s more, there are……At least fifty……No, sixty……It’s constantly increasing……”

Indeed, as Ye Fan said, more and more monitor lizards showed themselves, some smaller than the recently killed one, but some bigger.

They’d even arranged themselves in a formation, unhurriedly advancing towards the human army. Every step they took, the ground quaked and the wind blew gusts.

Their measured, unanimous pace only making them more terrifying.

Boom! Boom! Boom!

Rhythmic vibrations came.

By now, the entire city was in ruins. The lizards ripped through galvanized iron sheets with their claws, easily tearing apart buildings as they snatched the people inside, swallowing them into their scaled bellies.

The emergence of the lizards predictably caused more chaos and frenzy. Some fools desperately tried to climb the high-voltage electrical network, thinking to escape to the heavens. Yet just as they’d approach, they’d be hit with a powerful, crackling current, instantly burned to fine dust.

Obscuring almost the entire city, the high-voltage grid was supposed to prevent outside mutant animals from invading. But now that the monsters were inside the city, the electrical network became a terrible disadvantage, barring the way for those seeking to survive, shrouding the city in the darkness of hell.

The noise of gunfire, blood-curdling screams, the incessant vibrations of the ground beneath enveloped them, the only way out the tunnel they’d just passed through.

Access to outside the city had become blocked, while inside the lizards were acting like fiends of death.

His hand shaking, Ye Fan stood up with Wu Xingyun. There was nowhere to run.

The military commander stood by his vehicle, staring upwards, not believing what he saw. The monitor lizards, where and how had they sprung up so quickly?

Someone was asking: “Commander Liu, do we retreat?”

Still in the throes of bewilderment, Commander Liu, who looked to be a man in his early thirties, turned and looked back. Taking stock of what was left of his forces, he realized it was impossible for them to fight off the monitor lizards.

Yet didn’t retreat mean abandoning the city residents?

Commander Liu shook his head. Grabbing the intercom, he issued an order: “Team 1 and Team 2, destroy the power grid and open up the passage out of the city!”

After he gave the order, Commander Liu’s staff officer immediately objected: “Sir, you can’t do this! The mutant beasts outside the city……”

“Those who can escape, should. Otherwise, everyone dies……” Commander Liu interrupted. Then he shouted into the intercom again, “You remaining soldiers, are you willing to sacrifice your lives with me?!”

“Fire!” Commander Liu bellowed.

Countless artillery shells launched at the lizards, but the damage inflicted was very limited, merely temporarily pausing the lizards’ footsteps.

A fighter jet flew out from the ranks, emitting shells, hitting the electrical network that controlled the power grid.

Zi~~~~~! A blue electric arc streaked across the iron network, then disappeared.

A tank’s muzzle aimed at the grid, a great bang sounded, a way out of the city opened. More tanks rolled over barbed wire, smashing a section of city wall, and countless people poured out to exit.

After the fighter jet and tanks had done their job, they rejoined the battle against the lizards.

Watching the innumerable citizens rushing for the pass, Wu Xingyun couldn’t help being stunned by the scene before him.

Used to living on orderly worlds, he’d never seen such alarmed disorder.

Ye Fan tightly pulled at Wu Xingyun’s hand, following the flow of people towards the newly open channel.

Everyone was caught up in a state of herd mentality. Constantly bumping into someone, Ye Fan would try to reach out and help. Sometimes he’d get insults, sometimes gratitude, but more often than not, he couldn’t help at all.

People kept being crowded to the ground. A man, not robust enough to rise on his own, was hoisted up by Ye Fan. One more second, and the man would have crushed.

Not knowing what was going on behind him, Ye Fan again reached out to help a different person being squeezed by others, surprised to find himself gripping a middle-aged man.

Monitor Lizard

The Monitor Lizard is a large lizard belonging to the family Varanidae. There are 79 species of this reptile and they are native to Africa, Asia, and Oceania. They have also been introduced to the Americas, where they are now considered an invasive species. It is thought that this family of lizards originated in Asia some 65 million years ago!

The Monitor Lizard is covered in scales that can range from green to tan, grey, or brown in color. They have large bodies, with long necks and powerful tails. Their limbs are well-developed and they have strong claws. Monitor lizards have long tongues that are forked, like that of snakes. Of the species that still exist today, the Komodo dragon is the largest and can reach over 10 feet (3 meters) in length. The smallest species measure just 7.9 inches (20cm).

Most monitor species are terrestrial and found on land but some species will live in trees or are semi-aquatic. Monitor lizards are very territorial and aggressive, lashing out with their tails when provoked. They will also inflate their throats and hiss loudly.

Some Monitor Lizards are active hunters, while others prefer to wait and ambush their prey. They are usually carnivorous, eating a wide range of prey including birds, fish, insects, small mammals, and eggs. Some species also eat fruits and other vegetation.

These lizards are mostly solitary but have been found to congregate in groups as large as 25 in areas where water is scarce.

Nile Monitor Breeding Methods

Monitor lizards are known for being extremely intelligent and have even been taught to count to six in captivity. One example of their intelligence comes from the Nile Monitor Lizard and how it incubates its eggs.

When the female is ready to lay her eggs, the Nile Monitor uses its incredibly sharp claws to dig into a termite mound where they then lay their eggs. Termites are hard-working and once they see this hole, they work to close it, and by doing so provide a secure temperature-controlled nest for the lizard’s eggs. Once the eggs hatch the young reptiles can feast on the termites before making their way out of the mound.

Nile monitors also work together to steal eggs from Nile crocodiles. While one of these lizards will distract the female crocodile, the others will raid the nest for eggs.
