DPM Chapter 47 Part 2
Translated by Snowfall77

The middle-aged man was around fifty, with graying hair and wearing glasses with a broken lens.

“Uncle Luo?!” Said Ye Fan, utterly surprised to encounter an old family friend.

Luo Guo squinted at the man who’d pulled him up, finally recognizing the youngster: “It’s you! Ye Fan!”

Ye Fan nodded, but before he could speak, they all felt another tremendous wave hit.

Every person was knocked to the ground, the hissing sounds behind them making their blood run cold. Ye Fan looked back to see a lizard had picked up a military jeep, a commander-like person struggling in its jaws, screaming.

“Run, run!” Luo Guo said, “Run north!”

Ye Fan held onto Luo Guo, Wu Xingyun cleared the way, and the three people followed the crowd, fleeing desperately.

Who knew how long they ran. When the throng had become sparse, and they were surrounded by a forest, only then did people stop.

The sun was sinking westward, the strange white mist starting to invade the air again.

The people who’d escaped the city sat together in groups of two or three, making bonfires. They’d all be spending the night in the wild.

Wu Xingyun fetched a pile of dry wood, sitting at the edge of a fire with Ye Fan and Luo Guo.

Luo Guo sighed, warming himself by the flames: “Ye Fan, thanks to you, this time … If it weren’t for you, I’m afraid I would have been trampled to death. How are your parents?”

Ye Fan poked at the fire with a stick. “They……Died in xxxx. They were killed by a mastiff.”

“Oh……” Luo Guo fell silent.

Seeing the two weren’t talking anymore, Wu Xingyun asked: “Mr. Luo, weren’t you working in the institute? This……What the hell is going on?”

Luo Guo took off his glasses, wiped them, put them back on again, and said: “There was an accident in the lab. Those little lizards were originally our test subjects……No, I should be considered lucky, I escaped. The others……They’re all dead.”

Unsatisfied with that answer, Wu Xingyun figured Luo Guo knew more than he was saying. But when Wu Xingyun opened his mouth to ask more questions, Luo Guo said: “There are some things I can’t say. What I can say it that we should get out of here as soon possible. The farther the better, because……Things are going to get worse, this is just the prologue.”

All three of them lapsed into silence, until Ye Fan asked: “The farther the better? Go to where?”

Leaning against a tree trunk, Luo Guo slightly raised his head, yet didn’t answer. Then someone else came over to speak to them.

It was a middle-aged man, carrying himself with a bit of panache, and he said to all three of them, “”We’re going to go west on the highway. We’ve got three hundred people in our group, would you like to join us?”

“There’s mutant rats, going west on the road,” Ye Fan told him, “You shouldn’t go.”

The middle-aged man shrugged regretfully, and moved on to ask others.

Ye Fan also stood up and walked around, looking for news. He spread the word about the mutated rats in the west, while also bringing back new information to Wu Xingyun and Luo Guo.

" "

“There are two directions to choose from. One is the way we came, towards the rats. A lot of people went to get to xxxx through there. They think the plateaus and high peaks are safer. They want to avoid big cities.”

Adding wood to the fire before him, Wu Xingyun said: “The rat route is awful. What’s the other?”

“The other is the city Xi’an, going north……” Ye Fan replied, “However, I heard the road was blocked, and there’s an armed force with machine guns. No one is allowed to go past. Whatever comes near, gets shot.”

Wu Xingyun frowned. “Why?”

Ye Fan shook his head. “I don’t know. Which way should we choose?”

Luo Guo said: “Go north, Luo Ying lives in Xi’an.” Luo Guo was speaking of his daughter.

A little surprised, Ye Fan asked: “Luo Ying is in Xi’an? I thought she worked in xxxx?”

“She transferred to Xi’an a long time ago.”

“What about the armed police?”

Luo Guo stopped talking.

“I’ll go to Xi’an,” Wu Xingyun said, “An armed force is better than rats. Ye Fan, you……Will you come with me?”

Although both routes were dangerous, Wu Xingyun was more concerned about Ye Fan’s future after the upcoming nuclear explosions. Wu Xingyun’s secret hope was to place Ye Fan on the Federation’s ‘Noah’s Ark.’

Wu Xingyun knew that, during this time, Xi’an was close to a satellite launch center, as well as a military base. Making Xi’an the best choice.

Ye Fan nodded: “I’ll come with you. Wherever you go, I’ll go.”

“Then we go to Xi’an,” Luo Guo chimed in, “Even if police or the military are guarding the road, it’s not necessarily impossible to pass……I’m on a government research team, perhaps that’ll get us through……”

Divided into two groups, the people who’d escaped City C set off before dawn on their respective routes.

There’d been roughly a million residents of City C, and about one-tenth had made it out alive.

Most were young and strong. Luo Guo, with his glasses and older age, was somewhat out of place.

Of the hundred thousand who escaped, about sixty thousand were ready to brave the rats. The rest would try going north. They didn’t believe armed forces could bar the way for all of them, and many believed the machine guns were only rumors.

In the early hours of morning, Wu Xingyun, Ye Fan, and Luo Guo were walking northbound. The road passed through three medium-sized cities before arriving at a mountain pass separating two provinces.

Trekking along for a long time, Ye Fan and Wu Xingyun did not see the expected sunrise.

And soon enough, the forty thousand-some group had a problem.

People were falling behind. After walking in darkness for about two hours, Wu Xingyun felt their number to be much smaller. He turned to Ye Fan, saying: “It seems a lot of people haven’t kept up.”

“Hmmm,” went Ye Fan. In a little while, he said: “Some people are injured, and some don’t have much physical strength. Or they’re going in the wrong direction.”

Just as his voice fell, a scream rang out in the distance.

Someone had gotten lost and attacked by something in the forest.

The group was frightened, beginning to mindlessly run along the road. They’d run for a while and then stop.

The whole crowd was like a mass of headless flies, with no direction, no leadership, lost in the darkness, unable to orientate themselves. In short, a complete shambles.

Finally, the group came to a standstill. Everyone began to clamor, fight, and speculate about what was going on, until a megaphone blasted: “Listen to me! This isn’t going to work. We choose a leader, someone to take charge, and we plan our journey.”

“I suggest we all take out our food stores and divide it evenly.”

Someone promptly shouted: “Who are you?! Why should we listen to you?”

A bang, and someone shrieked.

“Oh, now you’re hitting someone?” There were discontented mutters.

Wu Xingyun mumbled to himself: “What the hell is going on?”

Luo Guo just sighed: “Hey, when is it? We need to work together.”

Ye Fan faintly sneered: “They’re probably hungry. Somebody wants to snatch something to eat.”

“Are you hungry?” Asked Wu Xingyun.

Ye Fan shook his head, but before he could speak, they heard someone in the crowd yelling: “No! This is mine! How can you steal from me?”

Immediately, the crowd descended into chaos, a voice bawling: “Don’t grab, we’re civilized people!”

The sound of people brawling soon drowned other noises.

Ye Fan didn’t try to fight with anyone. He and Wu Xingyun protected Luo Guo on either side, trying to avoid the scuffling and looting.

But in the dark someone caught at Ye Fan’s backpack.

“Boy, what’s in the bag?”

Wu Xingyun turned around to find a stout man holding two loaves of bread in one hand, the other hand pulling at Ye Fan’s backpack.

“What are you doing?!” Wu Xingyun scolded. “You’ve already got something to eat……”

The stout man paid no attention to Wu Xingyun, still yanking at Ye Fan.

Smack! Ye Fan punched the man in the face, making his nose bleed.

“Fuck off!” Ye Fan’s voice was a little sinister, but it got the job done.

The man quickly retreated, not pestering them again.

The three of them carefully made their way to a comparatively private area. When they were sure there was no danger around, only then did they take out their food.

Ye Fan had a whole bunch of compressed biscuits, enough to feed three people for a week.

The three of them kept being disturbed as they ate. People were coveting the remaining biscuits, trying to pilfer or fight over them.

Wu Xingyun and Ye Fan had no choice but to deal with the situation. Wu Xingyun wouldn’t argue, let alone fight civilians. Most of the time, he’d just say: “I can give you a little, don’t try to snatch……”

His words having no effect, Wu Xingyun didn’t know if he could adapt to this kind of life.

Even though he had a gun, even though he could easily twist the neck of any thief, he was incapable of being rough with ordinary people. He could only tightly hold onto his own food.

Ye Fan, on the other hand, adapted quite quickly.

He went into the crowd fighting for food, dragging out a portly man who’d been stabbed to death.

Whenever someone came to trouble the three of them, Ye Fan would stab at the corpse to give them a deterring demonstration.

After Ye Fan cut off a finger from a man trying to steal, no one else came to harass them.

Those who couldn’t grab food, watched those eating from a distance, perhaps pleading, sometimes begging.

Although Wu Xingyun felt Ye Fan’s methods were harsh, it wasn’t like Wu Xingyun had a better way. His meal was very unhappy.

Wu Xingyun stole glances at Ye Fan. The big child who’d vomited because he’d inadvertently killed someone, could now, after just one day, eat by a corpse without any qualms.

Ye Fan had long since lost the dazed helplessness he’d had when he’d first met Wu Xingyun. Even in such a chaotic situation, Ye Fan had found his position, used his abilities, and quickly adapted.

Compressed biscuits

BP-5 Compact Food (also known as a BP-5 biscuit) is a high-calorie, vitamin fortified, compact, compressed and dry food, often used by relief agencies for the emergency feeding of refugees and internally displaced persons.[1]

Description
BP-5 is available in packs of 2 biscuit bars. Each box of 9 packs contains 500g of food, with approximately 2,300 calories per box. Shelf life is 5 years.[1] The food is produced by Compact AS, based in Norway, and purchased by agencies through UNICEF.[1]

Ingredients
Ingredients include baked wheat flour, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, sugar, soy protein concentrate, malt extract, minerals, amino acids, and vitamins.[2]

Usage
BP-5 is used for disaster relief and disaster preparedness, and for emergency food rations in refugee camps, particularly for malnourished children. It is eaten directly, or mixed with water to make a porridge.[1]

Typically, an adult is given 250g per day. Although this is a calorie deficit, it provides the recommended protein and basic vitamin requirements. Because it is easily digestible, neutral tasting, and contains no dairy or meat products the food may be widely used, even for people with severe malnourishment.[3]

One study found that its portability made it susceptible to cheating, and recommended dispensing pre-prepared food instead when practical.[4]

BP-5, along with Plumpy Nut (a peanut-butter supplement) was fed to visitors to a small mobile refugee camp created by Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) to travel to major world cities to raise awareness.[5][6]
