DPM Chapter 48 Part 2
Translated by Snowfall77

Some were armed, stealthily feeling along with their bare hands and feet, searching for the particular brutes who’d robbed them, or simply pushed them off the road.

Revenge. Hatred. Counter-attack. Not resigned to being second-class. Having expectations of living at the summit of society.

A variety of motives pullulated in the night, culminating in multiple murders.

Weapons were thrust into the chests of sleepers. A scream echoed down the pavement, immediately rousing some. But many more died, their food and supplies snatched away.

Of those who were awakened, some relit their fires, guarding vigilantly. Others took advantage of the chaos to revolt, avenging themselves on their bullies.

In a world that had lost its social order, a new system would have to be established, and many would vie for the right to formulate the inceptive culture.

Ye Fan could only be glad he’d listened to Wu Xingyun’s words, and not rested on the highway. He might not have robbed other people, however that didn’t mean there wouldn’t be someone with enmity against him.

If he hadn’t been on the periphery, he couldn’t guarantee he’d have been the protagonist of the incident. Perhaps he hacked someone to death. Maybe someone else hacked him to death.

The rest period thoroughly interrupted, some people hurried on, though the majority chose to stay, in order to travel on as a group.
Woken up, Wu Xingyun found himself still in Ye Fan’s arms. His voice a little vague, Wu Xingyun asked: “Is there something wrong?”

“Mmm. It’s nothing to do with us. You sleep a little more, I’m still alert,” Ye Fan told him.

Wu Xingyun obediently closed his eyes again. Hearing the soldier’s light snoring resume, Ye Fan gazed at him for a long time. The sleeping man appeared especially agreeable and compliant, his skin supple, except for dry, cracked lips.

Lowering his head, Ye Fan kissed those lips, quickly, secretly, and softly.

The sun never came out, so no one knew how many had died in the night.

Ye Fan did discover that hardly anyone dared thieve anymore.

People gravitated to forming small groups, according to familial or social relationships.

Then the small groups coalesced into large groups.

It was a man named Wang Qiang who gradually ascended to the peak of the social pyramid.

Wang Qiang was extraordinarily strong. During the march he killed a mutated cat single-handedly, proving his superior prowess beyond a doubt.

Ye Fan and Wu Xingyun both speculated privately about Wang Qiang’s abilities.

The man’s head was bald, showing an old large scar, and his fighting techniques were ferocious.

When observing the man’s agility, Ye Fan felt Wang Qiang’s energy was particularly forceful, and Ye Fan decided Wang Qiang was likely a mutant.

A mutant more formidable than Ye Fan.

The procession slowly marched. The initial chaos behind them, there were almost no more vengeful attacks in the night.

""

When they passed a small town along the highway, they got a few vehicles and many more survivors joined the group.

Traveling along, people’s food stores inevitably ran out. Hunting was organized to maintain people’s health.

Wang Qiang, because of his strength, could take down the choicest prey. Using food and violence, he obtained many young followers, and the right to distribute food at will.

Because of his might and status, many girls also threw themselves into his arms.

At night, when others couldn’t find a place to rest, Wang Qiang set up a tent to do what he pleased, a follower always willing to stand guard.

Besides Wang Qiang, there were was another team of people who could hunt. For one reason or another, they disapproved of Wang Qiang’s conduct and were unwilling to follow him.

Wu Xingyun and Ye Fan among them.

Wang Qiang had spotted Wu Xingyun’s excellent marksmanship. He wanted to rope Wu Xingyun into his group, but was stymied by Ye Fan: “We just want to get to Xi’an to find our relatives. We don’t have any other thoughts.”

Persistent, Wang Qiang tried persuasion: “What’s Xi’an? You don’t want to go the army, do you? Don’t dream, look at what happened at City C……Follow me instead, I won’t treat you unfairly. Just know that I’m a mutant!”

Smiling and shaking his head, Ye Fan refused.

Wang Qiang’s expression transformed. Indiscriminately cursing, he stomped off.

After the two turned Wang Qiang down, most of the general group, intentionally or otherwise, tried to crowd Ye Fan and Wu Xingyun out.
In the middle of the night, Wang Qiang sent a follower to get rid of the two men who’d failed to appreciate his benevolence. Or was it that someone possibly threatened Wang Qiang’s position?

Thankfully, Ye Fan’s keen perception alerted him to anyone who tried to approach.

The other side, unable to succeed, could only reluctantly retreat.

Learning about the situation, Luo Guo sighed: “The frog at the bottom of the well!”

A month later, the group finally arrived at the mountain pass.

Everyone had already heard it would be guarded, and that no one could leave or enter without permission. However, when they saw it with their own eyes, they were still stupefied.

Along the high cliffs on either side, there were forts, appearing newly built.

The gate had once been a tourist attraction, with ancient-style wooden doors, but now it’d been entirely replaced with heavily guarded iron doors. The forts’ turrets were armed with machine guns, and there was an immense defensive electrical network in the sky.

Much higher than City C’s, the high-voltage network thrusted straight up into the sky. In the low light of evening, no one could see where it ended.

Getting closer, everyone could hear loudspeakers blaring propaganda.

“Attention! According to test results, this entire area is infected. Please remain in your home and do not travel. Any travel is prohibited.”

Wang Qiang stood at the forefront of the group, his past month of being leader giving him an inflated view of himself. And having realized he’d gained mutant powers, his ego was that much more swollen.

“Don’t mind them! Let’s go!” Wang Qiang shouted to the people behind him. “Let’s see who stops us!”

No one had the initiative to step forward. Three months ago, they’d been ordinary citizens. Or more precisely, a month past they’d still been living in an ordered society.

Who’d dare a conflict with the military?

Crooking a finger, Wang Qiang said to the nearest follower: “You! Go forward and tell them we won’t wait to be checked! The monsters behind us aren’t going away, and they won’t give us a way out?”

The unlucky follower tremblingly advanced, only making it two steps before there was a burst of gunfire.

Shells rained down in front of the crowd, inciting a shrill panic.

“Fuck!” Wang Qiang cursed unimaginatively again, “What makes us infected?”

The sole answer to his inquiry was ice-cold mechanical words issuing from a loudspeaker: “Passage is prohibited. Any who attempt to pass will be killed.”

Watching the unfolding scene in shock, Ye Fan and Wu Xingyun turned to ask Luo Guo: “What’s going on?”
