DPM Chapter 49-First Kiss Part 2
Translated by Snowfall7

The three men tied rope around their waists, stringing themselves together like candied hawthorns. Ye Fan would be in the lead, determining their upward route.

Wu Xingyun was responsible for fastening the rope in appropriate cliff seams. Therefore, even if one of them slipped, they shouldn’t plummet to their death.

And Luo Guo, because of his age and lack of physical strength, his job was—to make sure he’d didn’t fall.

They began to climb. In the darkness, three silhouettes slowly ascended the ninety-degree right-angled rockface.

Three months ago, Ye Fan could hardly get down a cliff using rope. Now he was very skilled at the opposite.

It took them a day to reach the top. During that time, Ye Fan fell once, but Wu Xingyun pulled him back up. Luo Guo fell four times, again pulled up by Wu Xingyun. Wu Xingyun himself climbed without mishap, due mostly to his stubborn strength. In the end, he was practically carrying the other two, until finally they got to the end.

At the top of the cliff, all three were heavily worn out. Luo Guo gasped: “Yun, I really couldn’t tell, you’re much stronger than you look!”

Ye Fan proudly explained: “He’s special forces, pure man, with abnormal strength. This was probably a piece of cake for him. We’ll just have to look up to him.”

Happy over Ye Fan’s ass-kissing, Wu Xingyun gave a bright smile, two dimples at the corners of his mouth.

Viewing this awesomeness, Ye Fan’s heart started galloping. When Wu Xingyun shot down a bird of prey, Ye Fan rushed to roast it.

Eating scorched meat yet again, Luo Guo couldn’t suppress his resentment. “Ye Fan……Did you have a girlfriend?”

Ye Fan shook his head: “No, why do you ask?”

Luo Guo huffed: “I’m just thinking. In the end, how many days must I eat burned food?!”

Wu Xingyun didn’t hear them, but Ye Fan was somewhat embarrassed, saying: “I’m sorry, next time I’ll pay more attention.”

A little more satisfied, Luo Guo wrapped himself in a blanket. He lay down at the cliff top, the cold wind whooshing over him. Ye Fan wasn’t bothered by the chill air, though he was anxious for Wu Xingyun’s sake. He went over to Luo Guo: “Uncle Luo, it’s cold tonight, mmm……Can I borrow a blanket for tonight, or should the three of us squeeze together?”

Luo Guo firmly disagreed. “Ye Fan, do you know the phrase ‘respect your elders and cherish the young’?! It might be cold at night, however I’m accustomed to sleeping alone. I don’t want to cram in with you youngsters. That big stone over there will shelter you from the wind, sleep behind that tonight.”

“Then, Uncle Luo,” Ye Fan rejoined, “Why don’t you sleep behind the rock with us? It’s too windy right here.”

“It’s alright, I like it here,” said Luo Guo. “A blanket and a coat are sufficient.”

“Oh.” After repeatedly determining that Luo Guo was where he wanted to be, Ye Fan walked over to the other side of the boulder and cleared a sleeping spot for Wu Xingyun and himself. He mulled over the pleasing fact that, in a short while, he could hug Wu Xingyun closely. Holding the soldier was nice and warm……And Ye Fan liked it an awful lot.

When he thought this, a little ripple of arousal ran through him. Unfortunately, just as he’d finished cleaning up behind the rocks, his keen senses let him overhear Luo Guo whispering to himself: “Ugh, youngsters have too many impulses……I don’t want to be a third wheel……If they started doing things, right in front of my face, how awkward would that be……I’m an elder. I wouldn’t know whether to sleep like the dead, or completely wake up.”

In an instant, Ye Fan’s face blushed bright red. He’d thought that the hazy affection he felt every night when he held Wu Xingyun to sleep was his own little innermost secret, and that no one else knew.

Now that he’d heard Luo Guo thinking aloud, a different feeling was rising……

Impulses……Urges……Just thinking about it made Ye Fan hot and bothered. It was hard to be calm, very hard……Sorry, Wu Xingyun.

So that evening, when Ye Fan embraced Wu Xingyun in his arms, taking shelter from the wind, his heart was pounding and he couldn’t concentrate on anything else.

Held close to Ye Fan’s chest, Wu Xingyun could feel the other’s rapid pulse. A little worried, Wu Xingyun asked: “Are you alright?”

“What do you mean?” Ye Fan replied.

Wu Xingyun snuggled in to listen closer. “Your heartbeat isn’t normal. Are you infected with a virus? You were climbing ahead today, did you get an injury?”

Ye Fan shook his head: “No.” When he said it, Ye Fan felt Wu Xingyun’s warm breath all over his neck, tickling him. His hands couldn’t help but tighten up. And recalling Uncle Luo’s blunt words, sexual thoughts entangled Ye Fan’s mind, his imagination running wild.

Thinking he was about to be strangled, Wu Xingyun struggled a little. Only to feel a hard thing pressing against his lower back.

Ye Fan realized too, both of them becoming exceptionally embarrassed.

Wu Xingyun didn’t dare move anymore, so he was stuck hearing Ye Fan’s breathing get heavier and heavier.

Neither one of them spoke, until finally Wu Xingyun, not wanting to fight with Ye Fan right then, said: “Go to sleep. Don’t think too much. We don’t know what we’ll encounter tomorrow.”

However, Wu Xingyun’s mild attitude emboldened Ye Fan to push his luck. His heart twisted and confused, Ye Fan asked a laden question: “Yun, is your wife pretty or not?”

Wu Xingyun blankly answered: “My wife?”

“Well,” Ye Fan answered, “I understand if you don’t to talk about it……I’m just asking……Didn’t you say you were married?”

As soon as Ye Fan had spoken, he’d began to regret it. In their current situation, the topic was far too loaded. What would he do if he’d pissed off Wu Xingyun?

Wu Xingyun took a quick look at Ye Fan, feeling almost wistful, and said: “They’re……very good-looking. But their character is horribly inferior……” Saying that, Wu Xingyun seemed to think of something, and laughed.

Seeing Wu Xingyun clearly engrossed in pleasant memories of his spouse’s appearance, Ye Fan was unhappy in his heart. He wanted to say something, but had no standing to do so. Becoming depressed, Ye Fan felt he was the mistress (well, he hadn’t gotten there yet), then he remembered. Hadn’t the wife kicked the bucket? Perhaps Ye Fan could still fight for the spouse position.

Whereupon Ye Fan had to remind himself of his own gender. Wu Xingyun wouldn’t like men that way, and the soldier’s tolerant attitude was probably because he didn’t want to make their relationship too awkward……

Ye Fan mentally sighed, raising his head a little. He needed to calm his thoughts. It’d be better not to talk about this stuff. He should be buttering up to Wu Xingyun more and carping less.

Yet, from the corner of his eye, Ye Fan noticed Wu Xingyun still chuckling to himself. Irritated, Ye Fan asked: “What’s so funny? You seem pleased with yourself. If someone’s got a bad character, their looks are useless! Besides, if they’re too beautiful, you won’t be able to hold onto them.”

Wu Xingyun’s smile froze on his face, remembering the mess of his marriage to Mozun. Mozun’s first love, Ouyang Liu……One worse than the other.

Sure enough, the Night Shard’s words cut close to the bone.

His voice subdued, Wu Xingyun said: “You’re right.”

When he said that, Wu Xingyun was finally aware that he’d been far too oblivious when it came to Ye Fan. And now……They were too close. Hugging each other at night. That was what couples did, and Ye Fan and himself weren’t sweethearts. Clearly, obviously not.

Wu Xingyun got up, intending to go use Luo Guo as a buffer.

However, as soon as Wu Xingyun stood, Ye Fan pulled on him.

Ye Fan’s grip was very strong. Wu Xingyun could throw it off though. Just he’d have to do it hard, and that would cause conflict.

His tone heavy, Ye Fan said, “Sit down!” He continued with a hint of exasperation: “We’re just talking, is you leaving really necessary?”

After hesitating for a moment, Wu Xingyun obediently sat back down.

Neither one of them spoke, nor did they sleep. The wind whistled over the top of the cliff, and no longer keeping each other warm, they both got deeply cold.

Eventually, Ye Fan broke the impasse. “It wasn’t intentional……I just……Forget about it. I mean, you’re very good. Your looks aren’t bad, and your smile is really nice. You could do better. That kind of bad-charactered woman isn’t worth thinking about.”

Wu Xingyun said nothing, while the surrounding air seemed to have congealed about Ye Fan, stifling him.

The feeling made Ye Fan almost frantic. He believed he’d just been following Wu Xingyun’s words. Ye Fan had even cajoled Wu Xingyun, so why was he getting this treatment from Wu Xingyun? Besides, Ye Fan had already apologized. Most importantly, he hadn’t said anything wrong……

Ye Fan turned his head, his eyes glinting with provocation, his eyebrows raised: “Am I right?”

Wu Xingyun quietly regarded the person in front of him. Ye Fan’s gaze was willful and stubborn, refusing to concede.

So very familiar. Exactly the same as a Mozun about to blow his top.

When the other was the Night Demon, Wu Xingyun didn’t dare deliberately disagree with him.

But now the person before Wu Xingyun wasn’t the Night Shard, whose wrath could destroy the whole universe. Slightly raising his head, Wu Xingyun smiled complacently: “You’re not right.”

""

Narrowing his eyes, Ye Fan itched with the sudden desire to strangle Wu Xingyun.

“Even though they aren’t worth always thinking about,” Wu Xingyun went on, “That person isn’t my wife, he is……A man……Mmm……”

Wu Xingyun’s lips were sealed, and the words behind them could no longer be said.

Ye Fan couldn’t kiss at all. He merely ardently pressed his lips to Wu Xingyun’s, and not knowing what to do next, kept them there.

All he knew was there was a fireball flaming in his heart. If the enemy was a wife, of course Ye Fan would be embarrassed to fight over a married man.

But if the love rival was a man……Then no need to be polite!

candied hawthorns
Tang hulu (simplified Chinese: 糖葫芦; traditional Chinese: 糖葫蘆; pinyin: táng hú lu), also called bingtang hulu (simplified Chinese: 冰糖葫芦; traditional Chinese: 冰糖葫蘆; pinyin: bīng táng hú lu), is a traditional Northern Chinese snack of candied Crataegus pinnatifida, also known as mountain hawthorn, Chinese haw, Chinese hawthorn, Chinese hawberry, or shanzha (山楂) in Mandarin Chinese. It consists of fruits covered in hard candy on bamboo skewers which are approximately 20 cm long. People often mistake tang hulu for regular candied fruits; however, they are coated in a hardened sugar syrup. This sweet and sour treat has been made since the Song Dynasty and remains popular throughout northern China.[1]

The two common names for the confection literally mean “sugar bottle gourd” and “rock sugar bottle gourd,” respectively. The “sugar” or “rock sugar” refers to the sugar coating, while the “bottle gourd” refers to the slight resemblance of the snack to the shape of a gourd.
