When Ye Fan woke up, he felt something hard poking against his head again. He looked up, his eyes meeting Wu Xingyun’s.
Wu Xingyun was clearly embarrassed, his face flushed red in the dim light.
In his heart Ye Fan took some pleasure at finding out the other’s little secret. However he didn’t want to infuriate the soldier, so Ye Fan was smart enough to not show it.
He sat up from Wu Xingyun’s lap quickly, asking rather disingenuously: “Is it morning?”
Wu Xingyun nodded: “Wake your Uncle Luo up. Let’s get ready to go.”
Still blurry-eyed after being woken up, Luo Guo noted the blanket and coat wrapped around him, saying apologetically: “I’m dragging you two down.”
“Uncle Luo, don’t say that,” Ye Fan rejoined immediately, “We’re gonna be the ones depending on you when we get to Xi’an.”
Ye Fan’s words thankfully eased Luo Guo’s inner sense of guilt and inferiority. The older man began to earnestly study the map by the firelight.

Ye Fan, roasting a meter long hare, felt Wu Xingyun’s look. He smirked, saying to Wu Xingyun: “See what I’m doing? If it wasn’t for me, I’ll remind you, you’d already be dead. How are you going to repay my life-saving kindness?”

Taking out a knife, Ye Fan cut a small piece of rabbit meat and held it out to Wu Xingyun: “Don’t be mad, I’m just joking.”
Eying the bite being offered and feeling placated, Wu Xingyun opened his mouth for Ye Fan to feed him. Afterwards, Ye Fan expectantly asked: “Is it tasty?”
Wu Xingyun’s face showed a smile: “Tasty.”
Foolishly staring at Wu Xingyun, it took Ye Fan a minute to get back to cooking the remaining meat.
Luo Guo felt dissatisfied watching this, eating his share while inwardly sighing to himself. Young people were being hard-pressed. They couldn’t find a wife, so they made do with a man. Well, Luo Guo figured he should turn a blind eye……But his portion was burnt!
They stayed under the cliffs for about ten days, until they’d made long enough ropes for climbing.
