DPM Chapter 5-Big People Part 2
Translated by Snowfall77

The door to the hall was open, flanked by two armed and ready soldiers. A large round table dominated the room, a few people seated here and there. Men and women, some military, some not.

Wu Xingyun recognized the man seated facing the door. Galactic Federation President Hobbs. Wu Xingyun could also put names on most of the others.

They had appeared in textbooks or on the television. President Hobbs was intimidating enough, making Wu Xingyun’s legs shake, let alone all the other heavyweights.

Wen Nuo pushed at Wu Xingyun’s back, saying: “Go in, I’ll wait for you outside.”

Wu Xingyun planted his feet. “I’m afraid…”

Wen Nuo wanted to give Wu Xingyun a kick, but relented when he saw Wu Xingyun’s slightly terrified, helpless look. Wen Nuo held Wu Xingyun by the nape of his neck and looked him in the eye. In a placating voice, Wen Nuo said: “You’re the best, the sneakiest Ghost soldier who ever went into battle. You nailed the enemy Night Shard with one shot. Don’t be afraid! Alright?”

“I…I want a gun…I’m nervous…”

Wen Nuo continued with his gentle comforting: “How can you take a gun to see the president? There’s nothing to be afraid of. You’re just meeting a few people…they won’t eat you. And I’ll be waiting here for you. You feel scared, just think of me, right here, waiting for you until you come out.”

Wen Nuo’s cheering words calmed Wu Xingyun’s flustered heart. He could rely on Wen Nuo. Wu Xingyun put his hand on Wen Nuo’s hand and said: “Right! I don’t have anything to be afraid of. I will complete this task!”

Wen Nuo slowly withdrew his hand, patting Wu Xingyun on the shoulder, and in a low voice ordered: “Turn! March!”

Wu Xingyun obeyed, turning and announcing himself at the door. “Report! Sergeant Wu Xingyun, Special Service Department Ghost Soldier 2nd Class, reporting to the President!”

Silver-haired President Hobbs leisurely stood up and waved towards Wu Xingyun, saying in a mild tone: “Good man, come in.”

“Yes!” Wu Xingyun walked forward, the hall door slowly closing behind him. Wen Nuo, watching, couldn’t help feeling like something in his heart had snapped shut too.

Instead of waiting by the hall, as he’d told Wu Xingyun he would, Wen Nuo strode outside. His rank wasn’t high enough for him to hang around in the Federal building for no reason. He felt upset, but as soon as he exited the building, he inwardly declared to himself: “I will work hard and gain a place in that hall in this lifetime. I will end this ridiculous farce of a marriage and snatch Wu Xingyun back. I will!”

Wu Xingyun, back in the hall and unaware that his pillar of support had absconded, was awash in waves of nervousness.

President Hobbs was still standing up, and the others had followed his example as they all clapped for Wu Xingyun. Holding his breath, Wu Xingyun’s mind went blank and his vest soaked with sweat.

Then, thankfully, the applause stopped and President Hobbs said in a reassuring voice: “Sergeant, be seated.”

Everyone else sat back down, but Wu Xingyun, his brain short-circuiting, still stood in place.

So President Hobbs added: “Don’t be nervous. We called you over just to talk to you. Sit down and speak with us.”

Yet Wu Xingyun had recognized the Federation’s Marshal Shi Fei, making his mind go even blanker. Wu Xingyun’s legs went soft as he clocked Marshal Shi Fei frowning at him.

Not sure what he was doing wrong, Wu Xingyun kept spiraling down into new depths of nerves. As Wu Xingyun was about to collapse, he was rescued by Shi Fei suddenly roaring: “Sit down!”

Wu Xingyun’s instincts took over. “Yes!” Then he plopped into the closest chair.

There were some scattered chuckles from observing this scene, but only for a moment. They were all cognizant that because of the Federation’s weakness, the brave solider in front of them was being handed over to the enemy.

When Wu Xingyun’s ass hit the chair, his mind cleared. He still regretted not have a gun with him. Even a fake gun would have been better than nothing. The feeling of having a weapon on him often settled Wu Xingyun’s tensions.

President Hobbs was the first to speak. “Sergeant, I believe Lieutenant Commander Wen Nuo has explained your mission to you. We’ve called you here for several reasons. First, we wanted to lay eyes on you. And then talk about whatever needs you might have. If we can meet them, we will.”

Wu Xingyun shoot back up. “Report! Following orders is the duty of a soldier. I will strive my best to complete the task appointed me by the Federation! I don’t have any requests.” Then Wu Xingyun sat back down.

President Hobbs nodded. “It’s still not too late for you to reconsider this matter.”

“Our second matter to discuss is that the date of your marriage has been agreed. It’s set for October 1st, meaning a month from now. We’re going to appoint a hundred loyal and reliable soldiers to escort you to the Night Shard’s station.” President Hobbs paused. “Sergeant, can you hear me?”

Wu Xingyun answered doubtfully: “I hear you sir, but what does this have to do with me?”

President Hobbs gave Marshal Shi Fei a sidelong look. Shi Fei spoke: “There currently ten thousand soldiers doing preliminary screenings out on the training grounds. In a little while, you can go choose your own escort team. Pick whoever you like.”

Wu Xingyun couldn’t help being stricken by Shi Fei’s attention. He shot out of his seat yet again, saluting Shi Fei and declaring: “Will resolutely complete the mission!”

Wu Xingyun returned to his chair.

“Stand up!” Shi Fei scolded.

Wu Xingyun immediately stood at attention.

“At ease!”

Wu Xingyun relaxed his position.

“Sit down!”

The well-trained Wu Xingyun sat down.

“No more fucking standing up, that’s an order!” Shi Fei’s brusque growl grew in volume.

Wu Xingyun, shuddering in his seat, responded: “Yes!”

President Hobbs continued: “The third and most important thing is the Night Shard is coming here in person today. To take a look at you. That is…Hmm…” The President searched for words.

A female biologist jumped in with: “Like a blind date! He’s coming over to meet you.”

Oddly refreshed, Wu Xingyun couldn’t help but say: “That’s great!”

Glances were exchanged around the table. Shi Fei annoyed, asked: “What’s great? Do you have even an atom of a proper solider in you? So anxious to marry the enemy, huh? Who trained you? They should be dragged out and shot!”

Admonished by the Marshal, Wu Xingyun hung his head, whispering: “I…I mean…I can take advantage of the situation, ambush and kill him…”
