DPM Chapter 51-Foul Forest Part 1
Translated by Snowfall77

Finished crushing Ye Fan’s hopes, Wu Xingyun walked away from the large stones, leaving behind a silently depressed Ye Fan.

“He’s vicious.” That was Ye Fan’s first feeling.

“He doesn’t like me. I deserved to get slapped.” Ye Fan’s second thought.

But when he furtively turned his head to eye Wu Xingyun’s constantly trembling shoulders in the dark, a different conclusion came to Ye Fan.

Wasn’t Wu Xingyun sad?

Grieving for who?

Ye Fan didn’t know, he only felt his own heart churn with undefined ache.

The next day the sun still didn’t show, though by now everyone was used to it. After Luo Guo got up, the trio prepared their descent.

This time, going downhill, Luo Guo led the way, Ye Fan in the middle, and Wu Xingyun last.

The greatest difficulty lay with Wu Xingyun, who had to keep steady, so he could protect the other two if they slipped.

Luo Guo was older, lacking in physical strength. Climbing down, he miscalculated several times. On one occasion, Ye Fan didn’t catch Luo Guo in time, and they both fell. Fortunately, Wu Xingyun pulled them up in time.

Getting down the mountain fairly quickly, the three reached the mountains’ valley in about three hours.

A small stream coursed through, strange fish sporadically displaying their scales.

Due to the fish, Ye Fan was tasked with fetching water, and he made sure to it when they weren’t near. Once there were too many of the uncanny creatures swimming about. Ye Fan couldn’t find the right time to venture up, almost getting pulled under.

It was Wu Xingyun who threw himself on Ye Fan in time, holding onto the younger man while rolling them both out of attack range.

Since that night on the cliff-top, they hadn’t talked to each other much. Physically close for a moment, they exchanged one glance, then quickly separated.

A cry came from Luo Guo: “Ah! I’m bitten!”

Rushing over, Wu Xingyun and Ye Fan found that Luo Guo, walking by the river, had accidently put a foot in the water and got nipped.

Ye Fan supported the older man to a stone on the shore. Luo Guo sitting, Wu Xingyun rolled up his trouser leg, to find a chunk of flesh torn off from Luo Guo’s heel.

Smelling blood, many of the one-meter-long fish tried to jump ashore. Some even used their fins to sweep a couple paces forward, although none of them managed to reach the men.

Cold sweat dripped down Luo Guo’s white face when he saw his agonizing wound.

His entire heel was gone, a glimpse of white bone edging out from the deep teeth marks.

He would no longer be able to walk.

Not saying anything, Wu Xingyun took out his meager first aid supplies. He applied the last of the iodine and bandages, wrapping the wound up as best he could.

The wound rapidly started oozing blood.

Dismayed, Luo Guo considered his condition, then looked at the two younger men in front of him: “I can’t go on……Look at the map, there’s a large forest ahead of us to get to xxxx. And even that’s still far away from Xi’an. I don’t want to go now. You leave me here!”

Wu Xingyun remained quiet. It’d taken serious physical exertion to travel the terrains they already had. And though he’d been healthy, Luo Guo had still been a burden. Now that Luo Guo was injured, he’d be even more of a liability.

Wu Xingyun had no intention of abandoning Luo Guo, but he couldn’t find false words of comfort.

It was Ye Fan who stooped down to carry Luo Guo on his back, saying: “Uncle Luo, the whole journey has been dull. Tell us a story, help us pass the time.”

Feeling ashamed, Luo Guo tried to struggle. However Ye Fan supported the older man’s rear with one hand, holding Luo Guo’s arms with the other. Ye Fan’s strength was naturally greater than that of a man over fifty years old, so Luo Guo gave up his efforts to get down, his heart especially apologetic.

Ye Fan smiled: “If it were only me and Yun by ourselves on this journey, we’d be so uninteresting, I don’t know what we’d do. We’d probably die of boredom before we could even reach xxxx.”

Walking side by side, Wu Xingyun took the pack from Ye Fan.

They kept pressing on, finding a shallow place to cross the river safely, finally coming to the last area of dense forest.

While Wu Xingyun and Luo Guo sat down for a rest, Ye Fan went into the trees to scout ahead. When he returned, he told the other two: “I found two roads going through the forest, either one should get us to a highway.” After saying that, Ye Fan paused.

“Is there something in the forest?” Wu Xingyun asked.

“Mmm.” Ye Fan nodded. “There’s something big on one road. I don’t know what it is, but it feels very dangerous. I think we’d be dead before we figured it out.”

“The other way, the forest is very deep, the air is foul and damp, and there was this……” Ye Fan took something out of his bag, holding it out in his hand for the other two to see.

It was the body of a black leech, the size of Ye Fan’s palm.

Wu Xingyun had never been aware of such a leech. He wrinkled his brows, asking: “Is this a mutant species?”

Ye Fan also didn’t know. He’d never seen a big leech like this himself. An average leech was about two to three centimeters long, while the dead one he held was several times larger.

Only Luo Guo shook his head, saying: “No, it’s an ordinary leech, not a mutation. I’ve seen this breed before. That road, besides this leech, was there any other dangerous creatures?”

Thinking for a while, Ye Fan finally concluded: “There are some other little things……But this was the biggest and most numerous. We……Should go that way?”

Luo Guo nodded: “That road should be the safest.” Adding a moment later, “I think whatever’s on the other road will stay away because of the leeches and gas in the air. We will have to be careful though.”
