Ye Fan took off his coat and covered Wu Xingyun. He lifted the soldier up into his embrace, and went out to where Peng Dawei waited.
“What happened in there?” Peng Dawei asked. “I heard screaming and some vibrations, then all of sudden it completely disappeared.”
“I don’t know……I just fainted and when I woke up this is how things were,” Ye Fan answered. Actually, Ye Fan faintly knew in the back of his mind that he’d likely mutated again. But he didn’t want tell anyone until he was clear on it himself.
Ye Fan and Peng Dawei walked one after the other, not taking long to depart the woods.
Upon them leaving, the forest behind them began to rapidly wilt away, while outside the black soil was blanketed with snow again.
Lowering Wu Xingyun to the ground, Ye Fan inquired softly: “How are you?”
Wu Xingyun felt that every part of himself was in great pain. Vertigo hitting him in bursts, he wanted to vomit.
He understood that the gamma rays Ye Fan had emitted had been very weak. Still, Wu Xingyun hadn’t been wearing any protective clothing. No, he’d been naked, without even the weakest means of warding off the rays.
Now feeling like he was falling apart, his perceptions gone. He suspected he’d soon die just like those plants.

In the distance, a long line of troops were advancing towards them, and Peng Dawei loudly yelled: “There’s a large force coming!”

Seeing Wu Xingyun’s face start to peel, Ye Fan pestered the military doctor worriedly, constantly asking: “Doctor, what’s going on with him?”
A little impatient, the military doctor replied: “What’s going on? He’s been radiated.”

The doctor put his medical kit away. “His whole body will peel off a layer of skin. It’s not serious, he won’t die.”
Having reassured Ye Fan, the doctor went off to check on Luo Ying in another vehicle.
Luo Ying’s situation was a little better. She’d been clothed, even wearing isolation wicking underwear.
It had been mostly her head receiving the brunt of the radiation, and she was recovering quicker than Wu Xingyun.
“Is that thing settled?” Yu Feng, the regimental commander, came over to ask Luo Ying.
Luo Ying nodded: “Yes, it’s settled……Only, this project is too dangerous, I propose we stop R&D on it. Find something new to use as an alternative.”
“Well, it’d be best to get safe provisions quickly.” Yu Feng sighed. “We don’t have much time, you know.”
Quiet for a minute, Luo Ying added: “I have someone. He’s like a little brother to me, even though we’re not blood related. According to the rules, he can’t join the group. But……He just saved my life, and I’d like to bring him with. Consider it my personal application. If it can’t be done, I’ll withdraw from the research.”
Yu Feng patted Luo Ying’s hand, hinting that she shouldn’t get too emotional: “You know this matter isn’t something I can decide. You write the application, I’ll hand it over for you. Just one spot?”
Hesitating, Lou Ying recalled what Ye Fan had said about Wu Xingyun. “Can you apply for two spots?” She asked.
“If they’re not blood relatives, they need to have made a significant contribution themselves. Step up the genetic food research. We might be sailing in space for hundreds of years, what will we do for food? If you can solve this difficult problem, the higher-ups won’t be stingy.”
After a pause, Luo Ying bowed her head. “Then I’ll write the application. Please don’t tell Ye Fan about this though. Just in case it doesn’t work, I’m afraid he’d be even more broken-hearted.”
