DPM Chapter 56-Noah’s Ark Part 1
Translated by Snowfall77

Hearing Wu Xingyun’s words distinctly, Ye Fan’s face went dark.

He silently moved his chair a little back, then said in an exceptionally serene voice: “Well, you have a good rest. Call me if you need anything.”

Yet what Ye Fan was really thinking was: “I’m harassing him?!”

Harassment!

Showoff……

After lying in bed for about a week, Wu Xingyun made an initial recovery. Lu Shi had reported Wu Xingyun’s situation to the higher ups in a timely manner, and without any apprehension, Wu Xingyun was absorbed into the ranks. Because previous documentation and ranks were already unreliable, and in absence of any witness testimony, Wu Xingyun was taken at his word, considered a sergeant second-class, and assigned to a regiment.

It was Ye Fan’s situation that was a little more troublesome. Luo Ying wanted Ye Fan to accompany herself, but Ye Fan very much hoped to be together with Wu Xingyun.

Paying attention to how Ye Fan’s gaze followed Wu Xingyun, Luo Ying smiled understandingly.

“No problem,” Luo Ying said, “I’ll help you to talk to the regimental command. And anyways, they’re short of people. You want to be with that one……In the same company and dormitory as Yun?”

Ye Fan nodded: “It’s best to be in the same dormitory.” Saying that, Ye Fan realized Luo Ying was chuckling at him. His face a little red, Ye Fan added: “No……I mean, because……We came together, and I don’t want to be separated from him. That’s it, nothing else.”

Luo Ying just smiled knowingly, staying quiet.

The next day Ye Fan was assigned to Wu Xingyun’s company, which Ye Fan was already familiar with.

The Company Commander was still Lu Shi, although only sixteen people of the original one hundred were left. The company’s Instructor He Renyuan had sacrificed his life in the siege against the tree monster, and due to there being so few people, no new instructor had been promoted up.

Partly for those reasons, the company would be moving. First to City H, to pick up more troops, than onwards to Xi’an, where they’d replenish their supplies and equipment, and finally on to the secret research base.

There were many vacant rooms at the station. That evening, Lu Shi, to celebrate the two new team members, had a small dinner.

The army had comparatively plentiful supplies. Combined with the support of the Academy of Sciences, they not only had meat, but also a smidge of vegetables and cooked rice.

Ye Fan exerted all his strength to make sure Wu Xingyun got some of those precious green vegetables, along with a healthy pile of rice. The others grinned and joked: “You two have a good relationship! Truly, you’re each other’s jīyǒu!”

Wu Xingyun didn’t understand what ‘jīyǒu’ meant. And trying to cover it up and only making it more worse, Ye Fan said: “Everyone is a good comrade-in-arms. Even unexpectedly having beer—this is heaven! Cheers!”

So over a dozen people cheered.

Peng Dawei was sitting next to Wu Xingyun during the dinner, causing Wu Xingyun a great deal of consternation.

Trying to finagle his way into a friendship, Peng Dawei asked: “Hey, you and Ye Fan are buddies?”

Eyeing the notorious mutant before him, Wu Xingyun’s scalp was a little numb. He remembered it clearly. When he’d just been married to Mozun, and in order to send videos back to the Federation, they’d gone searching for this photographer.

The nine-fold thunder knife that had been in Peng Dawei’s hand—how many Federation ships had it destroyed?

In order to evade his attacks, the first training a Federation soldier received was crossing the light net.

But now, although Peng Dawei was already thick and muscular, he didn’t have that big knife in his paws. It even appeared he hadn’t mutated yet.

“You used to be a photographer?” Wu Xingyun asked.

Taken aback for a second, Peng Dawei then nodded: “Yeah! I’ve photographed and filmed weddings and I did a movie. It’s ****, have you seen it? I was the cameraman!”

Wu Xingyun certainly hadn’t watched the film, that was impossible. In fact, Wu Xingyun wasn’t really paying attention, however he still heartfeltly expressed: “I’ve seen a lot of what you’ve filmed, you’re really good!”

Adding: “I liked it very much.”

Peng Dawei laughed happily, and brought up Ye Fan again, saying of the admired young man who was almost ten years Peng Dawei’s junior: “He’s very brave! Seriously, since this all began I’ve seen a lot of monsters……That day was really and truly terrifying, though. Even thinking about it now, my legs still shake. Except Ye Fan swore you were alive in there, and walked in without blinking. A real man!”

The burly Peng Dawei gave a thumbs up.

Slightly turning his head, Wu Xingyun looked at Ye Fan. In the dimness, Ye Fan’s gaze was calm. Faint light illuminated his face, tracing his perfect profile.

Wu Xingyun discovered that every time Ye Fan mutated, his appearance slightly changed. Even if you could recognize him at a glance, small details, or maybe the aura, had completely transformed.

At that moment, Wu Xingyun felt that Ye Fan’s whole body brimmed with a forbidding flavor. Sitting quietly in shadows, he was a carbon copy of the Federation propaganda posters of later generations.

When the dinner was over, people went back to their respective rooms to sleep. Because there were so few people, everyone had a room to themselves.

Ye Fan’s room had more than ten empty beds, left behind by those who’d died. He dithered at his doorway a long time, wanting to go to Wu Xingyun’s room, though he finally abandoned the idea.

“I shouldn’t harass him!” Ye Fan told himself silently. “Anyways, even here, I can smell him and hear his breath. It’ll still be as if we’re sleeping next to each other.”

Early the next morning, they packed up and prepared for evacuation.

Ten thousand soldiers, constituting one division, countless scientists, technical staff and engineering staff, all by train, went to Xi’an, a controlled city.

In Xi’an, the troops were supplemented, expanding from ten thousand to fifty thousand. Carrying large quantities of supplies, they advanced northwest.

In the rapid expansion, Wu Xingyun was appointed a platoon leader. Ye Fan, who’d demonstrated outstanding fighting skills and acute body control during the selection in Xi’an, was transferred to a different regiment, responsible for running security on missions.

Wu Xingyun’s unit was assigned to engineering, reportedly to build something when they reached their destination.

But what the specific project was remained a secret.
