DPM Chapter 58-Divorce Part 3
Translated by Snowfall77

Luo Ying turned and went back inside, no longer showing her face.

Ye Fan, stationed downstairs and seeing the person who arrived in the jeep, was astonished.

Who could have expected that Dai Rong would come this quickly? He’d rushed over in less than an hour.

Dai Rong reached out and shook hands with Ouyang Yi. “I just spoke with Luo Ying on the phone. She expressed her willingness to accept our subsidization. Therefore, Ouyang Yi, she is our most important personnel. And, as for her research results, we will spare no effort fighting for them.”

Ouyang Yi froze, trying to gauge the new situation.

Why would the military all of a sudden back Luo Ying? Was this just Dai Rong’s thinking, or……

“General Dai,” Ouyang Yi said, “I wasn’t aware you were friends with my wife. Maybe you don’t realize. Sometimes she talks big, but you should know she’s actually useless.”

Dai Rong replied: “Your words don’t persuade me. I’ll help her get back what belongs to her. I hear you’re getting divorced? I’m happy to hear it.”

“Dai Rong! You think the coalition government will agree to this? Have you forgotten how much money I paid towards the manufacturing of ‘Noah’s Ark’? Are you here to cause an internal dispute?”

Unperturbed, Dai Rong’s face was expressionless: “Luo Ying is worth far more than any amount of money. For her sake, it’s worth causing a dispute.”

“Then you have my blessing,” Ouyang Yi sneered, “So much effort for damaged goods! She’s worthless. At best she could be considered my assistant.”

Dai Rong remained impassive: “Yes, Ouyang Yi, you provided gene technology, a lot of funding, and you employ many highly-experienced mercenaries. However, let me remind you that in our newly formed government, the military is preeminent. We will assess ourselves what has value and what does not.”

Considering himself finished with Ouyang Yi, Dai Rong walked into the house. There were numerous details he needed to discuss with Luo Ying.

Bitter resentment already rising within, Ouyang Yi snapped: “Don’t forget, there’s a governmental policy of nonintervention in internal affairs! Luo Ying is an employee of my company!”

Dai Rong turned around: “I’m just a friend of Luo Ying’s, helping her with her divorce settlement. Don’t think too much, Ouyang Yi.”

Meanwhile, Ye Fan had been silently praising Dai Rong in his heart. Going up to the older man, Ye Fan exclaimed: “General Dai! Hello, I’m a big fan of yours.”

A little at a loss, Dai Rong asked: “I……Do I know you?”

Ye Fan grinned: “You don’t know me, but I’ve……I’ve read many of the books you wrote, and heard your speeches when I was in school.”

Dai Rong laughed, shaking hands with Ye Fan: “Are you a friend of Luo Ying’s?”

Nodding, Ye Fan said: “She’s like my sister.” Then Ye Fan noticed Dai Rong’s epaulet, saying somewhat surprised: “You’ve been promoted?”

A bit surprised himself, Dai Rong noted: “You really do know about me!”

“Yes, I remember you from before these end days,” Ye Fan told Dai Rong, “You were a major general. Now you’re an admiral!”

Dai Rong shrugged. “Well, let’s not talk about that. What’s happening with Luo Ying’s divorce?”

As the two talked, they headed for the living room where Luo Ying was already sitting. When Luo Ying saw Dai Rong, she inclined her head, saying: “Thank you for just now. I didn’t expect you’d come so quickly.”

Taking off his padded overcoat, Dai Rong asked: “What the hell is going on? Do you really intend to work with us? Funding is probably insufficient, but I think I could get the top brass to allocate more money……”

Luo Ying had already considered things a great deal. She shook her head slightly: “No, don’t rush yet, I have my own request……”

At once, Dai Rong went: “Right, no problem. What’s your request?”

“I have only one,” Luo Ying stated intently, “I hope that I……I can research independently, independent of any department or division.”

Hesitant, Dai Rong’s expression was distracted. Luo Ying’s request would be like making one more Ouyang Yi-type company, which would be of no benefit to the military. If there was no benefit, Dai Rong wouldn’t be able to convince his superiors. And like that, helping Luo Ying get a fair divorce settlement would become particularly onerous.

“You……Would you reconsider?” Dai Rong asked. “You know, I’ll back whatever decisions you make, and I believe in your strength, but……Without sufficient evidence and ample benefits, it’ll be difficult……”

Luo Ying sank back into thought. She’d been touched by Wu Xingyun’s suggestion of her having her own research lab. From now on, she no longer wanted to be controlled by others.

In the current circumstances though, she was alone. What she wanted was virtually impossible.

Ouyang Yi’s genetic research company had existed for many years, creating a fortune in the past century. Its funding was generous, and it employed a formidable force of mercenaries.

If Luo Ying remained in a deadlock with Ouyang Yi, while she was isolated and without help in outer space, she could only imagine what her life would be like……

“Actually, it doesn’t matter if you insist,” Dai Rong told Luo Ying, “Even if you can’t get much funding, at least your future life and safety absolutely aren’t in question.”

Biting her lips, Luo Ying looked up after a minute: “If the military helps me get my research results back, and invests in a laboratory of my own, I’m willing……I’ll provide free technical support for your troops for a period of ten years.”

Dai Rong stood up, walking around the room. Although he supported Luo Ying’s decision, it was mostly due to his personal sentiments, not because he was actually convinced of her abilities.

Luo Ying’s voice was resolute: “Within ten years, I will throw Ouyang Yi’s gene research company into the streets.”

Stopped still in his tracks, Dai Rong turned his head, gazing at Luo Ying for a long moment: “Good! I’ll talk to the higher-ups, get them to provide you backing and assistance. After ten years, you can independently R&D. We won’t interfere.”

The divorce of Ouyang Yi and Luo Ying occurred before the takeoff of ‘Noah’s Ark,’ and it was a most sensational event.

With Dai Rong’s persistence in unceasingly collecting evidence, Luo Ying’s nearly complete proof of her research results ownership, Ouyang Yi’s illegitimate son as proof of his infidelity, and so on, everything led to Ouyang Yi’s eventual derailment.

The depositions took three months, and within those three months, people from all over the world were constantly arriving. Luo Ying’s residential area was soon filled to capacity.

Among the new arrivals he saw, Ye Fan recognized some from television. Others, he had no idea who they were.

In the end, not all particularly well-known or powerful people had managed to survive.

To live required a portion of good luck.

Those who did have the good luck, resources, and money, established a new coalition government. A leader was elected, along with a new set of rules and bills passed.

After the three months, the coalition government’s first divorce judgement was that of Ouyang Yi and Luo Ying.

Both sides face each other in court, and nearly all officials attended the proceedings.

When it came to Luo Ying’s work, Ouyang Yi lost badly, Luo Ying’s side wiping the floor with him. Luo Ying’s research results were shown to be hers. Not only that, Luo Ying also pulled away several excellent scientists from Ouyang Yi’s gene research company.

Because of that, the two sides nearly opened fire on each other, a small-scale battle ensuing.

Ultimately, Luo Ying decided to concede when it came to division of property, expressing that she didn’t a single cent.

They divorced. Ouyang Yi damn well regretted it. Clearly, he’d moved against Luo Ying too fast and too harshly. If he had known……He wouldn’t have laid his cards on the table so early in the game.

Ouyang Yi shook his head. Although he knew Luo Ying well, he’d had no idea that Dai Rong, a man with considerable power within the military, would so far as to give Luo Ying his full support.

Ouyang Yi’s loathing of Dai Rong surpassed almost all others. If not for Dai Rong’s midway involvement, Ouyang Yi distinctly knew that Luo Ying and Ye Fan would have been no match for himself.

The only good thing about the divorce for Ouyang Yi was—Luo Ying didn’t want any ownership of the company, nor did she want money. His company still solely his and he’d lost none of his wealth.

“Dai Rong must be crazy! Actually supporting that woman, he’ll regret it in the end!” Ouyang Yi wildly raged to himself. “Without my resources, that woman can do nothing!”

He hadn’t realized it yet, that his now ex-wife was a genius. A true genius.

Even less did he know that his own research company would soon be outperformed by Luo Ying’s, until eventually sliding into obscurity.

(TN-For general purposes, there’s no real difference in rank between a general and an admiral. But an admiral is a higher rank than a major general.)
