DPM Chapter 6-Filtering Part 1
Translated by Snowfall77

“I…I mean…I can take advantage of the situation, ambush and kill him…”

Shi Fei’s facial muscles twitched. He slammed a hand down and then stood up. Making his way over to Wu Xingyun, Shi Fei stared down at the sergeant. Wu Xingyun had his hands on his knees, slightly shaking.

Shi Fei planted an arm on the table, leaning over Wu Xingyun and said: “What a great idea! I guess you’re going to be the ambusher, no?”

Wu Xingyun looked up. “Eh?”

Shi Fei slapped the back of Wu Xingyun’s head. “Eh? Eh what? The enemy army will be ready and waiting for something like that, and the war will start all over again! And that’s not even accounting for the Night Shard’s heightened senses. Only a Ghost solider can approach him within five hundred meters without being discovered. He’s extremely strong, and he can, when he wants to, expel an energy surge comparable to a gamma ray burst. Do you know what gamma rays are?

Wu Xingyun recited: “When a star collapses into a black hole, the resulting rays can last from mere seconds to ten thousand seconds, and travel hundreds or thousands of light-years away, killing any species it encounters, equivalent to the damage of the simultaneous explosion of thousands of advanced nuclear bombs.”

After showing off his middle school physics lessons, Wu Xingyun tentatively added: “The Night Shard…He isn’t that difficult to deal with, is he?”

Shi Fei patted Wu Xingyun’s shoulder: “Your education was ok. The Night Shard’s energy bursts can last a few seconds, and go as far ten lights, equivalent to ten nuclear missiles. That’s how powerful Mozun is.”

Wu Xingyun stayed silent. If the ambush were unsuccessful, Deta-Nuo would be destroyed.

A worrisome thoughts suddenly occurred to Wen Xingyun. He asked: “But…If he plans to do us harm, and we’re allowing him to come here, aren’t we letting the wolf in through the front door?”

A trace of shame showed on President Hobbs’ face, the female biologist appeared at a loss, and the Foreign Minister smiled. “Sergeant, don’t worry. All important personnel will be withdrawn momentarily. Along with related vital supplies. Only the people who are required to see the Night Shard will stay. As a precaution.”

""

Wu Xingyun sighed in relief. “If everyone is evacuated, that’s good.” That the high and mighty preferred to send him to his possible death, rather than endure any hardship themselves escaped his notice.

Digesting the Foreign Minister’s words, the female biologist become angry. She possessed a sense of justice, and it dawned on her that they were selling out their soldiers and Deta-Nuo base to cowardly appease the enemy.

Shi Fei had known this decision beforehand, contributing to his bad mood. Hearing Wu Xingyun say: “If everyone is evacuated, that’s good,” ignited feelings of rage and humiliation in Shi Fei’s chest. He barely stopped himself from roaring: “Want to withdraw? Withdraw then! I, Shi Fei, on this day, will never retreat!”

Therefore, President Hobbs had barely opened his mouth to speak, when Shi Fei pointed a finger at Wu Xingyun. “A sergeant who isn’t afraid of death, dares to complete his mission, and worries about the safety of others. I, a great Marshal, my courage isn’t as great as his!”

The Foreign Minister still had a smile plastered on. “Marshal Shi Fei, don’t get so excited, your life is precious. We’re just trying to avoid unexpected misfortunes.”

Shi Fei furiously threw his hat. “We and that demon army are irreconcilable adversaries. I understand the need for politics. But calling my life precious? What about everyone else’s lives? They’re not precious too? The lives of our soldiers on this planet aren’t valuable? That horrible Mozun dares to come alone. But we don’t even have the balls to speak to him face to face? We’re a fucking embarrassment to our ancestors!”

After Shi Fei finished shouting, the hall was quiet. Some of the faces showed shame, others regret, and a few were entirely unfazed.

A few awkward moments later, President Hobbs broke the silence. “If you feel that strongly about it, I agree that it might be good if there was a highly-credentialed person here to receive Mozun. Let’s take a vote, majority rules. Those of you who think Marshal Shi Fei should stay, raise your hands…”

As soon as Hobbs’ voice fell, Shi Fei lifted up his hand.

The foreign minister, out of malice and with an expression turned mocking, also raised his hand.

Then two more men followed suit.

There were ten people in the hall, and only four had voted for Shi Fei to remain.

Hobbs said: “Minority obeys the majority. Marshal, you’ll leave with us.”

Shi Fei was barely reining in his anger when Wu Xingyun also put his hand up, expressing his support.

“Sergeant, you’re not eligible to vote,” President Hobbs told Wu Xingyun. “This a high-level meeting.”

But Wu Xingyun said: “I think the Marshal is right. We are soldiers, we shouldn’t be afraid of death, of hardship, or of tiredness. If he ran today, it would be deserting and it’d follow him for the rest of his life. I hope he stays! And if…if the Night Shard is sincere about peace, there won’t be any attacks. We don’t ambush him, he…He should be reasonable…”

Shi Fei gave Wu Xingyun’s shoulder a big thump, expressing his approval.

Now, for Shi Fei, the vote was five to stay, six to leave.

“You’re really set on staying?” Hobbs asked. “If the Night Shard finds out your identity, it might not go well for you…”

Shi Fei exclaimed: “If there’s any trouble, let my Deputy Marshal replace me! Aren’t you always saying I’m impulsive and unfit for the position of Marshal?”

President Hobbs wearily nodded his head, slowly raising his right hand. “Well. I am now temporarily assigning Marshal Shi Fei as both Defense and Foreign Minister, here on Deta-Nuo. He will be temporarily responsible for this planet, duties including the reception of the Night Shard, training of Wu Xingyun until Wu Xingyun’s marriage, and finally overseeing that the peace accords are signed.”

A door on the other side of the hall unobtrusively slid open, revealing a passage to the underground airport.

All but Marshal Shi Fei and Wu Xingyun left the hall through the tunnel.
