DPM Chapter 61-Mutual Understanding Part 2
Translated by Snowfall77

Standing inside the security gate, Wu Xingyun’s whole body and luggage was scanned by X-rays. After a soldier searched him, Wu Xingyun took out his ship ticket to be verified.

There was no problem with anything. Wu Xingyun passed through the gate, then turned, waiting for Ye Fan.

Ye Fan’s luggage was fine, but when the X-rays scanned Ye Fan himself, the red lights flashed.

Wu Xingyun and Ye Fan stared blankly at each other as a soldier barred the way, telling Ye Fan: “I’m sorry. You do not pass inspection, and you will not be able to board.”

Ye Fan fished out his ship ticket: “What do you mean, I don’t pass? Look, here’s my ticket!”

However, the soldiers paid no attention, simply pulling their guns, pointing them at Ye Fan: “Please leave. Otherwise, we will be forced to kill you.”

Walking over to the inspectors, Wu Xingyun stated: “You must have made a mistake. He’s going with me, there’s no question of his identity.”

The two men were detaining everyone behind them. People in the back of the line became resentful, resorting to foul-mouthed utterances, and a flock of soldiers quickly carried Ye Fan out.

Looking over his shoulder at Wu Xingyun who was about to run after him, Ye Fan said: “It’s alright, there must be some mistake. You get on the ship first, I’ll find Luo Ying to help me.”

Hesitating for a moment, Wu Xingyun looked around, spotting Dai Rong. Apparently Dai Rong was assigned the same ship as Wu Xingyun. So, unable to help Ye Fan himself, Wu Xingyun ran straight over to Dai Rong, calling: “General Dai! General Dai!”

Dai Rong halted his steps and curved around, appearing somewhat downcast as he asked: “What’s going on with you?”

Wu Xingyun replied: “Ye Fan was stopped. They said he didn’t pass the inspection. What does that mean? What’s happening to him?”

Just then, another man in a different line was also stopped and carried out.

Dai Rong glanced over at Wu Xingyun, sizing the soldier up. “Did you pass the inspection?”

Wu Xingyun nodded affirmatively.

“That’s good……” Dai Rong said, “You board first, there’s some things……I’ll inform you later.”

As he spoke, Dai Rong took a cigarette from his pocket and lit it.

Observing Dai Rong smoke in a non-smoking area, Wu Xingyun felt things were a little strange. He asked Dai Rong: “General Dai, you will help Ye Fan, right?”

Dai Rong said: “Yes. Don’t worry……I……will stand by his side.” Finished speaking, Dai Rong made for an exit. Watching, Wu Xingyun saw Dai Rong stop Ye Fan and talk to him. A reassured Wu Xingyun waited in place, only to see Dai Rong and Ye Fan walk further and further away, until finally they disappeared from the boarding area.

At a loss as to what was happening, Wu Xingyun noted that the majority of passengers had already boarded their ships, and surrounding staff were already unchaining certain sections.

Wu Xingyun waited a few minutes more, yet no Luo Ying came to handle the situation.

In his heart, Wu Xingyun had a bad premonition, but the entire boarding area was already sealed, and no one could enter or exit.

The most outstanding scientists, government officials and military representatives were already gathered in ‘Noah’s Ark’ main ship’s coalition government chamber.

Everyone had a report spread out before them, filled with densely-packed data and conclusions,—stamped with the signage of Shengming Scientific Research Laboratory.

Luo Ying was seated at this round-table conference, opposite Ouyang Yi.

“Well, this is the entirety. According to our surmising, the Saer substance fog will reach Earth’s surface within a day. Now is the best time for us to cross through it.”

“According to our detection system, more than three hundred of the fifty thousand who were to board a ship were already infected with the Saer substance, which will produce mutations. We cannot take these people with us.” It was the interim military commander-in-chief speaking. “They will pose a threat in the future.”

“What threat?” Someone opposed. “Between ourselves, someone becoming stronger is a good thing!”

Yet the dissenter’s assertion was met with silence.

Quiet up to that point, Ouyang Yi eyed the screen constantly updating the list of infected people. When he spotted Dai Rong’s name, Ouyang Yi’s heart surged with glee.

Standing up, Ouyang Yi declaimed: “I agree with the Marshal’s opinion. I work in bioengineering, and according to our research of the Saer substance, these people have already mutated. When our ships pass through the Saer substance fog, it’s expected that we will all be affected. We’ll be altered to a degree, but……These mutants, at that juncture, will become exceptionally powerful and dreadful! They’ll be stronger than us by tenfold, maybe almost a hundredfold! Everyone, do you want to face a minority that’s a hundredfold more fierce than yourselves?”

People hushed.

Luo Ying also rigidly stared at the growing list of the infected, Ye Fan’s name jumping out at her.

Interlacing her ten fingers, Luo Ying tightly twisted her hands.

The government employees’ whispers insinuating into her ears.

“Most of those people are soldiers. Maybe there might be a military coup?”

“How could this kind of thing be allowed?” A newly elected finance official hissed. “They could certainly destroy our new coalition government!”

A sociologist speculated: “In this situation, if they really were a hundredfold stronger than us, without a doubt we’d be reduced to being their slaves! A year? Half a year? Try a month!”

After inwardly mulling over others’ words, Luo Ying stood up, trying to keep her voice as tranquil and rational as possible.

“Personally, I believe these people should not be excluded. Their strength could enable us to go further. In the environment of outer space, we need people who can do the impossible. They could be responsible for transforming new planets, preparing land for agriculture. Furthermore, if we face extraterrestrial life, I feel these people are heaven-sent for such a occasion. We should welcome them, not……reject them!”

Listening to Luo Ying, some of those gathered agreed.

Ouyang Yi puffed out a breath and smiled, intent on pointing something out: “The great scientist Luo Ying is only saying this because her lover and adopted bother are both mutants! You’ve probably already figured out how to take advantage of that to solidify your position, mapping out how to put the rest of us under your foot. I suppose in about a month you’ll be the queen here!”

In a split second, Luo Ying’s face turned ashen: “Dai Rong and I have no special relationship. I’m speaking in consideration of our ongoing development. In times like this, we should weigh the future of the entirety of humanity. Not our boring personal sentiments!”

Yet Luo Ying’s words didn’t grab enough attention.

The brand-new president stated: “Ms. Luo, we invited you because we want to know if these reports are true.” The president hoisted the reports in his hands. “Will these mutants truly be ten to twenty time more powerful than they already are when the Sal substance fog arrives?”

Luo Ying was silent for a moment. She didn’t want to admit it, but it was fact.

“In this situation, our spaceships will provide protection.” Luo Ying said finally. “If we abandon these people now, when the exterior surface of the Earth is exposed to the Saer substance fog, they won’t be able to evolve. They’ll die. These people have all contributed to the coalition government……”

Softly laughing, Ouyang Yi stood up: “How many people have died this past month? We are the spark of mankind! This is Noah’s Ark! For some strange reason, I strongly oppose bringing along a dangerous group. They’re quite likely to destroy our entire plan! If even just one of them harbors ulterior motives, what would we do? We ourselves can’t block them, and before humanity even sets sail, we might go extinct!”

While Ouyang Yi bloviated, an assistant kept tugging at his clothes.

However, Ouyang Yi paid no mind. He’d finally found a way to send Dai Rong and Ye Fan straight to hell, and he intended to take it. Under no circumstances would he let this new opportunity slip away! In any case……everyone present was an ordinary person. No matter what possible benefit, it wasn’t in their interest to allow such threats amongst them.

Only when Ouyang Yi had finished speaking, did he turn his head to look at his assistant.

The assistant signaled at the roll of names with a finger.

Glancing back at the screen, Ouyang Yi became somewhat stupified.

Because just a moment ago the names of his mistress and son had shockingly appeared on the infected list.

For a split second Ouyang Yi inwardly wavered. Still, he quickly came to his senses, standing back up whilst pointing at the list: “We have to consider the interests of the overwhelming majority of people! Look, my own wife and son are infected with the Saer substance! But I still don’t agree to letting these mutants board our ships! Even though it’s an agony like my heart is being stabbed, I persist in my conviction!”

With those words, Ouyang Yi sat down again, slapping on a helpless, grieving expression. He wanted to squeeze out a few tears to make his acting more convincing, but was unable to manufacture any……

The meeting came to a close, a vote was taken.

Of the hundred who were there, ten voted to let the infected board. Ninety voted against.

As the mutants would not be allowed to board the ships, that left more than three hundred vacant berths. Those good-performers who had not yet left the base would be used to fill the newly-empty spots.

Only at Luo Ying’s insistence, were the relatives of the infected allowed to go out and make their farewells.
