DPM Chapter 62-Part 2
Translated by Snowfall77

By the tenth day, the two men had finished eating all the stored food. And the thick fog of Saer substance that the scientists had predicted was finally within limits that those already mutated could bear.

In those times of scarce food, Ye Fan gave almost all of it to Wu Xingyun.

Even if it was still quite dangerous outside, they couldn’t continue to only hide underground. Someone would have to go find food.

Wu Xingyun was frankly astonished that he was still alive, though Ye Fan was even more glad that neither one of them had died.

They both got dressed. Ye Fan armed himself with good weapons, ready to go try his luck hunting.

While, due to the unknown situation outside, Wu Xingyun could only remain in the basement.

Before Ye Fan left, Wu Xingyun made himself clear: “Don’t run too far, trying to discover the state of affairs out there. I’ll wait for you for eight hours. If you don’t come back in eight hours, I’ll go out to try and find you.”

“Understood,” said Ye Fan. The two kissed goodbye.

Marooned in the basement, Wu Xingyun washed the wrinkled sheets, cleaned the room, and then found himself rather bored to death.

He was still flabbergasted that he hadn’t died yet. According to Luo Ying’s theory, he should have perished that first night.

Before, when Ye Fan had been with him, time had flown. But now that he was alone, Wu Xingyun felt the minutes turning to hours.

He started by sitting at the table, senselessly staring at the clock that showed it was only early morning. Fretful, he found an iron bar hung from the ceiling and did chin-ups. After that, squats. Sit-ups. Push-ups. Shadowboxing.

When done practicing his punches, he had finally used up four hours.

A few moments of rest, and Wu Xingyun began tidying up again. After straightening everything inside and out once through, it became seven hours since Ye Fan had departed.

Since Ye Fan hadn’t returned yet, Wu Xingyun couldn’t help getting anxious. Putting back on all the clothes he’d taken off to exercise, he went next door, picking out a rifle from the weapons Ye Fan had stockpiled.

Strip the gun, clean the gun, reassemble the gun.

Eight hours was just twenty minutes away.

Unable to sit still any longer, Wu walked to the entrance, the rifle in his hands.

The main entrance was a huge, tightly closed iron door, which Ye Fan had both covered with muslin and coated with a filtering material, in order to keep concentration of the Saer substance in the basement to a minimum.

Sitting at the door, Wu Xingyun suddenly worried that some monster had consumed Ye Fan, leaving not a bone behind.

But Wu Xingyun immediately comforted himself. Mozun would live for thousands of years. The Night Shard wouldn’t die so easily.

However, Ye Fan’s current capabilities didn’t yet match those he’d have in the future. What if……There was an accident?

Restless, Wu Xingyun stared at the hands on the clock.

Half a minute from eight hours.

Ten seconds.

Five seconds.

Placing his hand on the door handle, Wu Xingyun readied himself to go out. Only to have the door open from the outside.

A burst of stinking milky fog floated in, rapidly filling the space.

Wu Xingyun hurriedly retreated, subconsciously covering his nose and mouth. Although he thankfully recognized the familiar figure that had rushed in with the fog.

Without time to glance around outside, Wu Xingyun closed the door without delay.

Turning back around, he found Ye Fan collapsed on the floor, gasping and covered in blood. Ye Fan’s face was bruised, his clothes disarrayed. It looked like he’d fought with someone as if his life depended on it.

After Wu Xingyun helped Ye Fan up, Ye Fan’s stance was unsteady, so Wu Xingyun obligedly half-carried Ye Fan to bed.

Getting the last bucket of clean water, Wu Xingyun removed Ye Fan’s clothes, intending to clean them.

A tepid thing fell from Ye Fan’s chest, rolling to the ground with a thud. Wu Xingyun stooped and picked it up, opening it to find a large chunk of roasted meat.

Prone on the bed, Ye Fan smiled at Wu Xingyun: “Yun, you haven’t eaten all day. Aren’t you hungry? Hurry up and eat it while it’s still warm.”

Wu Xingyun answered with a “Mmm,” not eating, but instead wiping Ye Fan’s body clean first.

He discovered that Ye Fan had over a dozen knife slashes, and a heavy bullet stuck in his left rib, from which blood was incessantly pouring. Wu Xingyun was scared.

Ye Fan whispered: “It’s nothing, doesn’t hurt a bit……There’s scalpels and forceps in the drawer, you can help me get the bullet out.”

The light in the room was dim, making it difficult for Wu Xingyun to see clearly. He seized a mirror to reflect light rays, yet that yielded scant results.

Therefore, Wu Xingyun could only operate somewhat blindly. When the bullet clunked to the ground, Ye Fan was finally unable to stifle his groan of pain.

Wu Xingyun quickly grabbed some gauze, pressing down on the wound. There wasn’t enough though, and it was soon soaked through with red.

Feeling like his hands were filled with blood, Wu Xingyun looked to Ye Fan, whose forehead was sweaty and voice weak: “I’m alright……Already good. Don’t get too worried.”

Wu Xingyun slowly eased his hand off the wound, to happily find that blood had already coagulated. He wanted to wash the wound, but if he did, there’d be no more drinking water.

Giving up on cleaning Ye Fan’s wounds, Wu Xingyun just kept him quiet company.

Ye Fan’s eyes closed, only opening again after about an hour. His appearance was much improved, while Wu Xingyun observed that most of the knife wounds had healed, not even leaving scars.

“You, what happened for you to end up like this?” Wu Xingyun asked Ye Fan. “What’s going on outside?”

Ye Fan merely pointed a finger at the meat on the table. “We should eat before we talk. It’ll rot fast, so we need to eat it quickly.”

Not arguing, Wu Xingyun tore the meat into two pieces, giving Ye Fan the larger share and keeping the smaller for himself.

When they’d finished eating, they were thirsty, splitting the last of the water between themselves.

Then, taking a deep breath, Ye Fan talked about how it was outside.

“Everything is upside down. When they see someone, they shoot first and ask questions later. There were about a thousand people left behind on the base and about three hundred mutants. I circled the base, most of the thousand did die ten days ago, when the Saer fog came down. The small part that escaped by some fluke were killed by mutants.”

“The white fog was everywhere, I couldn’t see who was opposite me. I looked for most of the day without finding any food. I got stabbed a few times, but couldn’t return empty-handed. Finally, my nose made itself useful, sniffed out some roasted meat. I snatched a piece and made my way back.”

“I don’t know what they’ll eat without meat, and I can’t care about it. In any case……I want to live.”

“There’s no one who cares about us, there’s no order, and I overheard those mutants forming small gangs and then fighting each other for leadership. It’s chaos. You must not, by any means, go out there.”

“I’m going to be alright. In the future, you stay here, I’ll got out.”

Ye Fan was silent for a moment, then finished with: “I think we’ve got the best place on the whole base, but we mustn’t be found here. Yun, you don’t need to worry about me, I’ll get better quickly.”

Shadowboxing is an exercise used in the training for combat sports, especially, as its name implies, in boxing. It is used mainly to prepare the muscles before the person training engages in stronger physical activity. In shadowboxing, only one person is required to participate; the participant throws punches at no one in particular.

Coagulation, also known as clotting, is the process by which blood changes from a liquid to a gel, forming a blood clot. It potentially results in hemostasis, the cessation of blood loss from a damaged vessel, followed by repair. The mechanism of coagulation involves activation, adhesion and aggregation of platelets, as well as deposition and maturation of fibrin.

Coagulation begins almost instantly after an injury to the endothelium lining a blood vessel. Exposure of blood to the subendothelial space initiates two processes: changes in platelets, and the exposure of subendothelial tissue factor to plasma factor VII, which ultimately leads to cross-linked fibrin formation. Platelets immediately form a plug at the site of injury; this is called primary hemostasis. Secondary hemostasis occurs simultaneously: additional coagulation (clotting) factors beyond factor VII (listed below) respond in a cascade to form fibrin strands, which strengthen the platelet plug.[1]

Disorders of coagulation are disease states which can result in problems with hemorrhage, bruising, or thrombosis.[2]

Coagulation is highly conserved throughout biology. In all mammals, coagulation involves both a cellular (platelet) and a protein (coagulation factor) component.[3] The system in humans has been the most extensively researched and is the best understood.[4]
