DPM Chapter 71-Seizing Treasure Part 1
Translated by Snowfall77

Inexplicably, Wu Xingyun felt that the Ye Fan before himself was very dreadful, the mutant’s body permeated with a terrible chill, brimming with ruthlessness and the stink of blood.

But as Ye Fan’s strong arm embraced Wu Xingyun’s shoulder, Wu Xingyun’s tension disappeared.

Ye Fan handed over the books he’d found to Wu Xingyun for safekeeping, and went to take to a bath.

Unconcerned about the bodies outside, Ye Fan felt he didn’t have time to deal with the Wang brothers’ corpses. There were more urgent considerations.

After Ye Fan finished his bath, he found his clothes completely bloodstained. So he tore down the black curtain from the window, carelessly wrapped it about his body, then walked together with Wu Xingyun over to the main hall of the temple.

The hall was a Tang Dynasty replica, glazed tiles on the roof, the interior columns made of reinforced concrete.

Wu Xingyun found the candles, and the two men began reading the attained books by candlelight.

Ye Fan studied quickly. Wu Xingyun, on the other hand, could make little to no sense of most of the vertical characters. Meanwhile, Ye Fan was reading ten lines at a glance.

Ye Fan had to hurry. There was one highly significant issue he had to settle before the other mutants confronted him.

The reasons the other mutants had stayed in Xi’an, the reasons they’d slaved for the Wang brothers, enduring their cruelties, came down to two essential points.

First, Wang Ruoxu enabled their ordinary family members to survive the Saer fog.

Second, Wang Ruoxu occasionally taught the mutants small practices that increased their abilities.

As quickly as possible, Ye Fan needed to find the method that enabled the normal people to keep living. He had to steady the hearts of the other mutants, and most importantly, he had to ensure Wu Xingyun didn’t die in the early morning.

Scanning pages, Ye Fan felt unexpectedly glad that he’d loved Taiwanese and Japanese manga as a child. Those comics had used traditional vertical characters too, making reading this present script relatively easy. Along with his classic literature and language classes from high school, Ye Fan had sufficient knowledge for what he needed.

Quickly enough, Ye Fan found the practice that ordinary people required to survive.

Although, looking at it, Ye Fan was startled.

It turned out the method was quite simple. It was merely the basic Daojia breathing method that Wu Xingyun had already learned.

And there was no mention of holy water or any other such thing.

Brows knitting, after a short while Ye Fan was able to make a determination. The vast majority of Wang Ruoxu’s ‘practices’ had been cheap tricks used to make himself more grand and mysterious. Ordinary people didn’t need that ‘holy water’ every day to survive, especially seeing as how it was simply boiled water.

Still, Ye Fan wanted to confirm it beyond the shadow of a doubt. He got up, and with Wu Xingyun showing the way, they went over to the large vat.

When he sniffed and tasted, Ye Fan had his definite answer.

The holy water had been nothing but Wang Ruoxu’s dirty fabrication.

Wang Ruoxu had always demanded that when he gave the holy water, the ordinary person drink it on the spot. They weren’t allowed to take the least bit for later. Perhaps Wang Ruoxu had been afraid a mutant would perceive the truth.

Listening to Ye Fan’s speculation, Wu Xingyun felt a burst of outraged incredulity: “Wang Ruoxu was too awful ! We were actually grateful towards him! I was worried that since Wang Ruoxu died, that I would die with him. Ye Fan, do you plan to expose him?”

“Mm.” After a moment, Ye Fan shook his head. “There’s no use……I think they wouldn’t necessarily be convinced……I’ll have to think about it……”

Ye Fan sinking into contemplation, Wu Xingyun sat quietly by his side, browsing the books in spite of not knowing most of the characters.

The minutes calmly passed. Ye Fan sat wrapped in his black curtain, thinking long and hard, until finally sighing: “It’ll have to be this way……”

Thinking that Ye Fan’s tone sounded a little frustrated, Wu Xingyun asked: “You……Are you going to imitate Wang Ruoxu?”

“I can’t think of another way,” Ye Fan replied. “I can’t wait for a riot, and I can’t oppose every mutant here. Besides, Wang Ruoxu’s fakery was very useful, an ordinary person could control all these mutants…….” Ye Fan’s voice faded as he saw the expression on Wu Xingyun’s face, the soldier’s face getting gloomy with every word that Ye Fan said.

His heart feeling a little sad, Ye Fan softly whispered: “Do you think I’m no good?”

Wu Xingyun answered: “I just……I think things you get by cheating won’t last long. I don’t want to sleep next to someone like Wang Ruoxu.”

Ye Fan reached out with both arms, embracing Wu Xingyun. After a little while, he said: “Please believe me, I……I won’t become like that.”

Wu Xingyun said nothing else. Instead he internally calculated the time and helped Ye Fan put the seized books away.

While Ye Fan went and hung the Wang brothers’ head high above the main temple hall.

Everything was prepared, and it was finally the usual time for everyone to come see Wang Ruoxu.

The first to come were the guards who’d slowly regained their consciousness. Some of them saw Wang Ruoxu’s degraded head and attacked Ye Fan without a word. Some waited and watched.

Ye Fan used his strength to resolve those charging against him, and then continued to patiently wait.

Next came the ordinary family members of the mutants. When they saw the Wang brothers’ heads, they were all horribly alarmed, so much so that a few started crying loudly, convinced they too were about to die.
