DPM Chapter 74-Part 2
Translated by Snowfall77

Ye Fan read the detailed message with a heavy heart, but didn’t immediately offer assistance. He’d matured, as he’d had to, and wouldn’t take action without careful consideration.

“Ask precisely how strong the mutant animals in City C actually are. It’s important to have concrete numerical descriptors. No metaphors or exaggerations.”

The staff put together and sent a new message for Commander Liu.

About four hours later, Liu Yi’s reply came back.

This time the text was clear and organized, with minute descriptions of every mutated species in City C.

There were essentially four species. The most numerous were the lizards, with a small amount of mice, a few cockroaches, and for good measure, blood-sucking bats.

The monitor lizards truly were the most terrible. The smallest was fifty meters high, the largest was three hundred meters high, possessing very thick skin, no fear of any thermal weapon attack, and improved intelligence, able to battle in unison. Liu Yi estimated their IQ to be about seventy. They occupied every corner of City C. How many there were wasn’t known, just that they were ubiquitous.

The number of mice was also unclear, though it was certain that they were far, far fewer than the lizards. Liu Yi estimated that their population was roughly equal to what it had been before the last days. Their physical size was not that large and their attack strength hardly equal to that of the lizards.

As for the cockroaches, unexpectedly, there weren’t many and they weren’t particularly active. Liu Yi could not estimate their population, but their fighting capacity was low enough ignored.

It was the blood-sucking bats, who could grow to the size of a fighter jet, that was the lizards’ most fearful enemy.

The number of their nests was somewhere between ten and twenty. In the evenings, their bodies would obstruct the stars. Tentative estimates put their population at tens of thousands. And while their fighting capacity was lower than the lizards, they were more nimble, able to circle the skies, making them formidable and difficult to dispatch.

After taking in all this information, Ye Fan muttered irresolutely to himself for a few moments until eventually making his choice: “Send Commander Liu a reply. Tell him to persevere. Within half a month, someone will come to his rescue.”

Ye Fan stated his decision and no one opposed it. The past two years, Ye Fan had almost never been democratic. He would say what would be done and it would be followed.

The people below him wouldn’t have known what to object to anyways. Ye Fan’s capability was outstanding. No matter if it was hunting or swallowing up other mutants, Ye Fan took the lead. The strategies he formulated were rational and fair. There was nothing to rebel against.

However, for the first time, facing a terrifyingly mutated, nuclear-radiated City C for the sake of twenty ordinary people already long since abandoned……Were they worth it?

Ye Fan’s next words were straightforward: “I intend to go to City C. Those who are willing to go with me won’t lack gain. If you’re not willing, stay here freely. I won’t force anyone to go.”

His underlings opened their mouths to state their positions, but Ye Fan kept talking: “I only need those whose fighting strength is A-level. If your combat strength is below that, and you go with me, you won’t make progress, you’ll just lose your life in vain. I need thirty people, the quota is limited to that. And it’s important that it be decided as quickly as possible.”

In order to have convenient management and allocate tasks properly, Ye Fan rated other mutants according to their combat abilities. A-level was the highest, B-level the second highest, C-level next, and so on……

When Ye Fan said he’d only take A-levels to City C, everyone clearly understood—this trip was to battle mutant monsters and level-up in practice.

Even if the situation seemed a little scary, in the last two years Ye Fan hadn’t ever schemed harm against another mutant. Nor had he ever dragged a companion into a difficult situation for the sake of his own righteous anger. Although he spoke simply, his actions were always purposeful, not blindly impulsive.

Ye Fan didn’t necessarily acknowledge it, but by popular feeling he already had an indistinct deity-like status.

Now he intended to take mutants with him to battle, to increase their power. A-level mutants naturally rushed forward to be included, leaving those of lower levels inevitably secretly depressed.

Though his group was ready to leave quickly, Ye Fan’s mind was now preoccupied with another matter—what was to be done with Wu Xingyun?

Frankly, City C was going to be incredibly dangerous. The nuclear explosion had only happened four years ago. If there was still radioactive contamination, Ye Fan wasn’t willing for Wu Xingyun to be anywhere near it.

But to leave Wu Xingyun alone, leave him behind……Ye Fan hated that thought even more. He was deathly afraid of returning to find Wu Xingyun a dead body.

The mutants alongside Ye Fan had already sussed what was bothering Ye Fan, yet they didn’t dare joke with him about it. Unexpectedly, it was the mutant in charge of the telegraph station who spoke up: “What are you afraid of? With so many people here, Wu Yun will be all right. Even if you leave him, who would dare to do anything to him? We all want to live……Boss, have some confidence. Wu Yun won’t fall in love with someone else just cause you’ll be gone a couple months.”

Everyone had a chuckle at this, releasing the tension. Until Ye Fan cast a dangerous look around, and their laughs sunk back into their bellies.

Ultimately, Ye Fan decided to listen to his lover.

Wu Xingyun told him: “I’ll be here waiting for you.” And then adding: “Pay attention to your safety.”

Ye Fan only made it three steps before turning his head around, still unable to part from Wu Xingyun.

He privately confessed that he didn’t know how many trusted mutants he had tasked with protecting Wu Xingyun, but he still didn’t feel at ease……and he was taking an electric telegraph with him……and Wu Xingyun needed to send him a telegram every day.

Listening to Ye Fan ramble, Wu Xingyun felt a bit vexed. He couldn’t help interrupting: “Am I that unpopular? Have you been that excessive these years, that they’re going to kill me to take their revenge?”

A little reassured by Wu Xingyun’s words, Ye Fan finally left with his people.

However, when Wu Xingyun looked at the gaggle of mutants that Ye Fan had charged to keep watch over him, Wu Xingyun couldn’t help being dumbfounded……

These people’s names would be famous to later generations. Many of them Wu Xingyun had learned about from his history books.

The tall, bearded mutant standing in front of Wu Xingyun would be known as the Demon Army’s Mowang. His real name was Zhao Ding, and he’d died in the Federation Siege of 562.

The short, thin one, with no meat on his bones, would become a Ghost Bat of a devil. Though he didn’t have the codename Ghost Bat yet. Right now he went by Tian Long. He died in the Federation year 800, fighting against Federal mecha.

As the for the beautiful girl with the slim waist and large chest, she already went by the name that future generations would know—Midnight Beauty. She died in 1,235 of the Federal calendar. Caught by the Federation, she’d committed suicide. It’d been the Night Shard who stolen her body back, to be buried in an Alliance cemetery.

There were many more……

Looking at each and every one, Wu Xingyun discovered mutants who’d died in battle against Wu Xingyun’s own Ghost soldier squad.

Being protected by these later generation mutants, living with them for next three or four months, Wu Xingyun felt himself under a great mountain of pressure……
